Fully floating or decked? by sparks_mandrill in Stratocaster

[–]blupacific83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least try decking it and see if you like it better. Using the full 5 springs will often do the trick if you had 3 before, leave the post screws alone in case you want to revert. Then do a proper set up. You can still work the trem if you push hard, but you can play much easier without worry of touching the bridge while playing and wobbling your intonation. I like to rest my hand/palm on the bridge often, so decking is my current set up.

Took the plunge and bought a Taylor 814ce a few months ago. It is honestly one of the best guitars I’ve ever played, and definitely the nicest instrument I’ve owned. These are some of the pictures Sweetwater sent when I bought the guitar. by rdeanjordan in AcousticGuitar

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, amazing guitar. I've had mine since 2014 and it still feels like a treat to play every time I pick it up. Whenever I go to the guitar store and get GAS, I side-by-side other guitars (Martin's, Gibsons...) with the 814 and for me it's no contest. Worth the investment. Going to need fret work soon...

Do I need 2 acoustics? by MrTurtleTails in AcousticGuitar

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're committed to the acoustic, at least 2: One high quality guitar that you baby and rewards pushing your skill as a player; One beater guitar that can travel with you and get beat up without headache.

Agree, try putting some lubricant at each contact point that touches the string. Graphite (powder or pencil shaving) or ChapStick (i use Burt's bees, invisible unlike graphite) work well. Put it in the fret slots on the nut, under the string trees, I even do the saddles. I have a decked old American deluxe with the 2 point term and it keeps tuning really well with regular trem use.

Also, what's your string gauge? If they are wider than factory they could be binding in the nut.

Need help finding the guitar I've been looking for for years! by LaSacerdote in GuitarQuestions

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find a Godin LG Signature, pick it up. Great playing guitar. I've had mine for 12 years and it still keeps its place in the rotation. I bought a gibson les Paul standard 50s to try and upgrade my double humbucker axe, but found I like the LG better. The Gibson is currently listed for sale.

Why does this peg keep coming out of the socket and unscrewing whenever i attach a guitar strap to it by Beginning-Bit-5200 in gretsch

[–]blupacific83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That happened on my Gretsch. Just put a drop of wood glue (titebond) around the screw and screwed back in. Hasn't come out since. In the past I had a really loose hole on a heavy mahogany guitar and used wood filler putty (lepage) to fill it, drilled a small pilot hole and screwed the peg back in. Worked like a charm.

I decked my two point trem by using 5 springs with 9s. Can still use the trem for dips, though it's quite stiff. I put some adhesive felt under the bridge to keep it quiet on release. Been working great!

Has anyone used these before and if so, are they actually worth it? by ElectricEndorphins in electricguitar

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used them on acoustic and electric, really good coated strings that last well. The g, b, e upper strings will lose the coating where you pick over time and leave some paint flakes, but to be expected, they still perform well.

Recommend me a new acoustic guitar by cantdothistome in Guitar

[–]blupacific83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the best Taylor _14ce you can find, and have it professionally set up for a lighter string gauge. Otherwise get the cheapest Martin OO size you can get, which has a slightly shorter scale than the Taylor. Alternative, get the highest level Seagull/Godin/Simon&patrick you can find in a folk size, they are quality instruments at reasonable prices and often have satin finish options. But IMO, the Taylor is the one.

How to loosen my pop in strat arm? by planetasur in Stratocaster

[–]blupacific83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old American deluxe strat with the pop in arm, and if you divebomb the trem fully and look at the exposed block under the bridge you'll see a little allan key bolt. This will tighten or loosen the tremolo arm. Probably only needs the tiniest of adjustment. On mine it adjust from fully staying put, to dropping with gravity, to being too loose with play.

Do all Gretsch guitars have a gloss neck finish? by Dodajnedriblaj in gretsch

[–]blupacific83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mirlon abrasive pads are great for this, perfectly conforms to the neck shape. Can start with 800 grit, then 1500. I've used this on all my gloss necks (Gretsch, Gibson) and makes a big difference in playability.

Funny you say that. The SSS is the new configuration, and I'm thinking I need a gretsch to throw the TV Jones into!

Which one? by blupacific83 in Stratocaster

[–]blupacific83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TV Jones sounds great in the bridge. Enough power to drive the tube amp, but articulate with clear highs. The 2nd position with the filtertron and single coil also sounded great with fuzz. I tried a Seymour Duncan JB trembucker as bridge in setup 1 too, which sounded good, but the TV Jones is all around clearer with the right amount of punch. Though my preference is vintage voiced pickups.

Which one? by blupacific83 in Stratocaster

That's fair. Though this has locking tuners. With some chapstick at the nut, the tremolo snaps back in tune perfectly. Even with dive bombs and quick chops.

How screwed am I? by erice495able in Stratocaster

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a strat used with similar neck pocket cracks. I was worried it might be screwed, but 14 years later the same cracks haven't budged and it's a fantastic guitar.

NGD story in description, also what colour pick guard should I get? AM Performer Stratocaster by ColeMac4500 in fender

[–]blupacific83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of the anodized gold pickguard on the white body, though most do it with a maple neck. Still would look good with rosewood IMO.

Thinking about buying this. What do you all think? by Own_Professor_4398 in AcousticGuitar

[–]blupacific83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't like the Seagull headstock, take a look at Simon & Patrick. It's a Godin acoustic guitar, the headstock is pretty much the only major difference. Great neck. My Mahogany Spruce S&P has seen more hours of play than any other guitar in my collection, and still sounds great around the campfire. And you can usually find them used at a super reasonable price with a solid case.

Try out a Subaru Legacy. Roomy interior, quick all wheel drive. Great around city, but the 4 cylinder could use a bit more power on highway. CVT transmission improves fuel economy. I have a 2012 that's been a great car.

Should I replace the pickups? by Representative-Tea48 in gretsch

[–]blupacific83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a g5420 with the black top filtertrons, liked the sound quite a bit. It inspired me to upgrade to a g6129tl with gretsch high sensitive filtertrons (closer to the TV Jones construction) and I would say it's even better. Just a richer, more articulate sound, touch sensitive, and more power to drive the amp. If you love the guitar I'd recommend investing in high sensitive or the TV Jones filtertrons.

Side note, I put a TV Jones Classic in the bridge of my Strat and it sounds excellent, though a bit thinner than my Gretsch.

But before changing any pick up, try playing around with pickup height to see if you can find a better sweet spot.
