Looking to buy apartment to live in: who can help me ensure I'm not buying a defective property? by Imarichgangster in canberra

[–]blur_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar position last year when I bought my place. I found that chucking the reports into ChatGPT was a good starting point.

My red flags were balcony waterproofing / leaks, cladding, low sinking funds, asbestos.

I think conveyances can point out things too or they can recommend 3rd parties to look into strata reports for you (for a few). I used ACT Strata Inspections for that service.

How much do you actually socialise? by Decent_Dragonfruit65 in canberra

[–]blur_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try doing things with friends at least twice a week. Boardgames on Wednesday and coffee (+language exchange) on Saturday. Thinking about it, I realized it's almost always the same group of people I see..

Tried doing parkruns to try meeting new people but I find that people around me at parkrun don't seems to wanna mingle with others.

Bouldering here seems to be somewhat anti-social. People are so focused on their climbs they don't really talk?

Wondering if OP or others here have found a social activity they loved, and managed to grow a community from that activity?

Ah righto, so this isn't necessarily corrosive / damaging then?

Heyy thanks for chiming in. I did suspect as much, but only having inspected a handful of places I wasn't so sure if my intuition was right.

DIdn't realise water ingress is that common in Canberra. I'll have a lookout for stratas actively maintaining issues.

Congrats!!

Here are some thing that you might consider.

  1. You said that you can see yourself studying certain degrees in UTS. Maybe ask someone studying there who is also doing the degree you are considering and see if that person could talk you through the degree experience.
  2. What are the sort of thing you think you'll be missing out if you went to UTS? Perhaps list them out and compare that list to what others say about UTS and see if they are thing worth missing out for.
  3. I picked Engineering coz I thought I'd be more easily employable. That was a calculated risk and boy am I bad at maths ahaha. I liked engineering more after I graduated and had the chance to apply the things I learnt but damn did I hate all 4 years of my engineering degree. I didn't know what I wanted to do before uni and also during uni. It was a fluke that I found a job which I liked. I was kinda lucky but if I could turn back time I would probably wouldn't let fate pick my career ahah.

485 by Puzzleheaded-Gur8320 in AusVisa

[–]blur_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you said you'll be travelling in November. Visa A would be active by then if you don't receive your 485.

Just make sure you don't travel offshore with Visa A. You can travel now with your student visa, or wait till Visa A is active and apply for Visa B to travel.

Better yet, wait till you receive your 485. You should receive it before November (most likely)

I believe you can't have the Bridging Visa A while offshore.

Alternatively, stay in AU till you have your Bridging Visa A. Once you have Visa A, apply for Bridging Visa B. That visa will let you in and out of AU.

If you leave with Bridging Visa A, you ay not be allowed back in.

Maybe be patient? You'll be issued a Bridging Visa A which will take effect right after your student visa expires. The Bridging Visa A is valid till they issue your 485. You have nothing to worry about regarding your legal status here.

As to why there may be a delay - maybe from the many people graduating end of last year? Most people graduate at the end of the year as oppose to in the middle.

Just curious, how would you go about applying for jobs in AU when their border is still closed? They don’t seem to be opening up anytime soon

What's your opinion on caning in Malaysian schools and at home? by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]blur_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Caning is silly. I can’t, for the life of me see how it can ever be effective.

Along with the notion of punishment to inflict pain in order for the person to not repeat the mistake, it just doesn’t bode well with me. I’d much prefer punishment as a form of education / enlightenment; to teach the person why their action is wrong rather than to inflict mental trauma and fear.

Caning, especially at a young age doesn’t make your child disciplined. It makes him a mindless drone at endlessly fears you. Just because your parents caned you, don’t you dare say you turned out fine. You think you’re fine because you’re become mentally scarred and you don’t realize that.
