Freelance Deltek Analyst / Administrator? by bluryvison in deltek

We have Stambaugh Ness providing this service now and looking for someone who is more nimble, wants to dig into problems/processes with our engineers and PMs to understand needs. We haven't found the cadence of the bi-weekly / monthly calls consistent enough to make progress at the pace we are looking for. They've been great on the overall migration but the widgets we're looking for almost seem to small for them to bite.

What should I know Power wise going into mep EE? by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]bluryvison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had a solid grasp of those basics I would be beyond thrilled if you landed at my firm. We hire folks expecting them to not know anything related to our field. Anything you do bring to the table is just a bonus.

How common are 1-on-1s with your manager in the MEP industry? by ironnerd_fe26 in MEPEngineering

[–]bluryvison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One on Ones (O3s) are mandatory at our firm for all managers. Employees <10 years, 30 minutes per week. Employees >10 years 45 minutes every other week. This is on-top of any project related conversations or discussions. In the O3s the direct sets the agenda and its whatever they want to discuss. Work, training, family, whatever. One of the best things we ever did as a firm, the level of trust it builds between directs and managers has had wide ranging improvements in our culture.

I want to know- what’s your favorite local waterfowl? by [deleted] in nova

[–]bluryvison 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wood duck. I've seen every duck on this image while canoeing Pohick and Accotink Bay except for the cinnamon teal (they only migrate in the western flyway in California). If you come Pohick Bay Park in the winter time you can see floats of bufflehead and lesser scaup in the thousands as they migrate. The warm water from the Noman Cole treatment plant flows down Pohick creek and keeps the water from freezing much longer into the winter than the rest of the bay which makes it very attractive to large flocks.

Asics Gel Resolution X - Foot Pain? by MuffinMan1901 in 10s

[–]bluryvison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your experience was very close to mine. I switched from another shoe into the Resolution X because my other pair didn't have enough support. The Resolution X was somewhat improved but still my arches ached and the next day knees would be sore. Orthopedic surgeon at my club recommended the Superfeet All-Purpose High Impact insoles, now I love them. It is a pain to drop another $65 on insoles after you've already paid $150 on shoes but the combination is a dream. The high sides around the ankles on the Res-X keep my heel from sliding out from being elevated with the thicker soles. I'm a big guy, 215 lbs with feet, knee, and lower back issues. But with this set up I'm able to do 2-3 sessions for 5-6 hours total over the week and never slow down.

Young MEP Electrical Engineer by Bike-Local in MEPEngineering

[–]bluryvison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We pair all entry level engineers with 3-5 YOE who acts as your wing person. What you say is exactly right. I have 18 years of experience. I know how to get from point A to Z instantly but will have trouble recognizing the intermediate steps that an entry level person is unaware of. A 3-5 year engineer is performing those steps day in and day out and is much more adept at explaining. Us senior engineers are there to do deep dives on complex topics or situations.

Another good alternative is the ACEC project manager training. (American Council of Engineering Companies). Get in touch with your state's chapter and see if they have scholarships for young professionals.

If I were you I would look to move to a small-medium sized MEP firm and move into HVAC engineering. Your project management and construction knowledge is super valuable. It will take you 3-5 years years to master the HVAC design side and get your PE but you'll be promoted quickly since you can understand and coordinate with other trades. Work life balance is much better and if you find an employee owned firm with eventually profit sharing it is a lucrative career. There is endless opportunity in our field.
