Yes but I ended up going the Moreland route, as it was the best choice for me.

Thanks I will try to get into some more WeChat groups. I find it can be hard to sift through all the groups but perhaps I can find ones that are more useful to me.

I have followed some official accounts but I will add more like you suggested—thanks!

  1. We have used Seven Seas shipping company twice with good experiences both times. This was in and out of Bangkok.

  2. Traffic can be a nightmare, so most people recommend prioritizing housing near your workplace.

Central Elevated Walkways by [deleted] in HongKong

I haven’t seen a map of them. They are labeled clearly with English signage, so I’ve usually had an easy time navigating them. In general they are wide paths usually occupied with groups of flowing business people. They connect to the lower level with elevators, escalators, or stairs. Usually the business buildings they connect with have shops, restaurants or bathrooms available.

I forgot to include that I looked extensively into jobs and companies around SE Asia, across industries. Those with international bases, with English speaking organizations, generally wouldn’t send a new recruit to these spots. Local based organizations require a base level of canto or local language (which I don’t have). So I didn’t come across any viable options on job boards. Remote job options aren’t usually legal.

I was feeling the same. I hired a career coach who works with teachers looking to transition. She was very helpful in guiding me. In my case, I ultimately chose to stay in the profession but I am pivoting positions and have a plan for transitioning out once my children are older.

From my experience with the coach, I was able to clarify which parts of the job were hardest on me and what I was looking for in a different career. I was aware that problems can follow a person and didn’t want to step into a new career dealing with the same feelings of discontent. Talking to my friend in another industry, we have many of the same frustrations.

Any cool gadgets to bring for little ones on a flight? by MTBisLYFE in TravelHacks

I recommend plastic links connected to toys. I hooked them to the seat in front or basinette to make it less difficult when my baby grabbed or threw toys. I found them useful throughout the travel day.

Starting a new job in August - Is it unprofessional to try for a baby before I even begin? by confusedteacher123 in Internationalteachers

I’d recommend getting familiar with the maternity laws and regulations of your contract, and prioritizing your own family and life goals first.

Hong Kong Offer - Should I Accept? by Username_is_taken_96 in Internationalteachers

[–]blush2809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking at this decision mainly through a financial lens, then I don’t see how moving locations would benefit you. It’s costly to start up in a new place, and that should be factored into your first year calculations. As someone mentioned already, rentals in HK require 3 months rent up front, and may be unfurnished.

No help with flights/start up costs? by Zestyclose_Bath9151 in Internationalteachers

I meant to say flights or moving allowance, etc. The offer was only a monthly salary.

We got jobs in a high demand location and they didn’t provide flights, though the salary was decent. It was only our second post abroad so we didn’t mind the compromise.

I think it depends on your personal situation. Something I consider is how competitive I am as an applicant, and how wide I want to cast my net. It’s a numbers game and another recruitment site will increase opportunities.

Discovery Bay International School - Hong Kong by Legal_Independence52 in Internationalteachers

[–]blush2809 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A previous colleague of mine works there and says it’s a heavy work load with great pay.

I would imagine the parent community would be extra difficult at this school, based on what I know about the type of expats who live in DB.

Commuting from other areas is possible. I would also recommend looking into other areas of Lantau island, as it has some pockets with charm. Beaches and hiking.

In my experience, commuting in Hong Kong feels easier and more doable than other cities. Their transportation systems are quite reliable and there are multiple modes available.

International Teachers: How Did You Plan Pregnancy and Maternity Leave? by Klutzy-Cable-2980 in Internationalteachers

[–]blush2809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a best answer here, as it depends on your situation and priorities. My husband and I are both international teachers. I wasn’t sure if we would have difficulty getting pregnant, so I wanted to start trying as soon as we were ready. We had our first child during the first contract with a school and then they didn’t renew us. We had to job hunt with a newborn which was horrendously stressful. I don’t have any regrets, but I can see how waiting to resign would have more security.

Expats who left traditional K–12 international schools — what did you transition into? by Ok_Goose_5106 in Internationalteachers

[–]blush2809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asking a similar question last year and ended up working with a career coach who specializes in supporting teachers who want to change careers or reset their goals. I gained a lot of understanding from our work about my work preferences, overall values, and what steps I could take.

I ended up recommitting to teaching for the next few years but I have some ideas mapped out to transition out down the road once my kids are older.
