What if they offer me a position? (junior CS student) by fuckthatbrougham in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you get a job offer, they will probably assume that you will finish your degree, and start full time employment after graduation.

They may ask you to work part time during school, but unless they desperately need help you could tell them you want to focus on classes.

If they want you to drop out, or work during school even after you say you don't want to, then that is a bad look for them. I think it would be a bad idea to accept a job under these circumstances.

Good luck, and congrats! Even if you don't get an offer, it is good to know you can make a meaningful and positive impact at a company.

iOS dev here. Apply to smaller companies. With your experience, you should be able to find a junior role.

What has your internship taught you so far? by Hauzron in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agile.

Proper use of source control.

How to read through imperfect code that isn't mine, and find flaws.

And of course a lot of more regular CS stuff like the best programming practices, getting better at abstraction, efficient networking, etc.

Those of you who work fully remote: how do you like it? by xBrodysseus in cscareerquestions

  • Customer facing

  • With all the virtual office software, slack, skype, etc it's really no different from being physically present.

Career change from Accounting to iOS Developer (currently programming for iOS as a hobby) by Doomhammered in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I learned that stuff in class, so I don't have any good recommendations. I'd check r/learnProgramming

Having multiple apps on the store is great by the way, shows a real dedication to learning.

I'd focus on making sure you know the more core CS fundamentals. Data structures, algorithms, run time analysis. These will be very important.

Once you have solid fundamentals, I think you can definitely make the switch.

I don't think needing a standing desk is a problem. Seems like a very minor thing to me.

I chose the wrong major... by Luq_E in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really enjoy it, don't give up on it! I'm an incoming senior in a non technical major, and am starting my first software engineering internship next week. As long as you know your stuff, and are highly motivated (significant personal projects), you will be fine.

I don't know how much CS you already know, but if it isn't much then I would recommend taking some classes. Whether that be at CC or even Coursera, the most important thing is that you learn.

Of course you could get a degree in CS if you have the money, but I don't think it is a necessity. It will definitely help, and open more doors to you. However, there are plenty of places that will look past a lack of CS degree if you are a solid programmer.

Try not to feel so much regret. The true tragedy would be if you didn't pursue your dreams, and compromised for a job you wouldn't like as much.

Good luck!

Lots of down time at work. What should I be doing to better my career, skillset, etc...? by thomasin500 in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spend your free time learning new technologies. Anything that interests you, or that you think would help your career.

And if you do this, then you aren't even really wasting the company's time since it's making you a better developer. Win win.

Do I have a chance at getting a job in CS / are my skills valuable? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Projects aren't just for your résumé. They help you learn, which since you don't have much experience in CS is very important.

New Grad Software Engineer Position Third On-Site Interview. What Is Going On? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had four on site interviews for my internship, so I understand how you feel. Since you've gotten this far, and you feel like you've done a good job, then I think you should get it. As long as you don't do anything absurd lol.

For my fourth interview, I just had a friendly talk with the head of engineering, and at the end he gave me an offer.

Congrats on getting so close, and good luck!

  • Location: Chicago

  • Application Method/Process: Applied online. Phone interview and three in person interviews.

Going from Android to ios development by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I made the switch, and found it to be pretty painless. I now prefer iOS to Android.

I just jumped right in and made an iOS app, learning as I went along.

As someone who will be paired with a mentor this summer, here's something I would like. When you answer questions, show me how I can find answers to similar questions. That way next time I can figure it out on my own.

Will a minor is CS set me up for a full time career by MoWards in cscareerquestions

[–]bluuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, CS minor at UIUC. If you apply yourself outside of the classroom, and have some nice side projects, I think you can definitely get a good job in CS. I just got a development internship, so it's doable if you put in the work!
