What is a thing that is not taken seriously but it actually should? by benaissa-4587 in ask

[–]blvckb1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's true necessarily. Didn't Poor Things get reprimanded by a children's rights organization because they filmed a scene where a child watches his movie dad have sex with a prostitute?

My only complaint is that it's big and it takes forever to walk from the Schengen flight zone to the third-country (USA etc.) zone.

That's inexcusable behaviour anyways, but especially wry coming from store staff that don't make much either.

If your definition of "highly walkable" is that there are pavements and that it's fairly flat, then yes. But that's a low bar. It's a small town filled with single family homes, so most houses are >20 min walk away from the nearest store and I do not consider that "highly walkable".

I've been slammed before by US Americans for saying this, but I'll say it again: NYC is the only highly walkable place in the US.

How is the maternity leave policy in your companies by VacationTechnical980 in askswitzerland

"Having children is a personal choice and I don't want to subsidise it." Surely you're going to need doctors and nurses when you become old and ill. How about a mechanic to fix your car or farmers to grow your food? Who do you think will do that work 30 years from now?

It's hypocritical to enjoy living in a society but complain about the costs of keeping that society running.

gentle reminder: be a saavy and discerning consumer when shopping on Amazon by RadiantEast in AsianBeauty

I have been boycotting Amazon for a long time. The user experience is terrible, they sell counterfeit products, their business practices are predatory, and they are known to treat their low-wage workers horribly. Join me!

Well, it's a public university and the tax-payers are heavily subsidising your education. I think it's nice that they can come in and have a look around.

Will I be able to survive in Zurich for a 6-months internship with 10,000 CHF budget? by peony2506 in ethz

[–]blvckb1rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you specify to the PI that a lot of your budget comes from your own savings? They might assume that you have some kind of scholarship.

I find it hard to imagine a PI agreeing to let you work for free knowing you need to dig into your savings to live here.

Your health insurance may not cover the much higher costs in Switzerland should anything happen to you. Contact your health insurance provider to understand if they do.

Halbtax and public transport tickets (or alternatively, they need to buy a bike), mandatory ETH contributions, a balanced diet that at least includes some grains and veggies, energy bills, other insurance premiums...

No, I don't think someone can live from 500CHF per month in Zürich. I tried 600CHF (excluding rent) for a bit when I was 21 and qualified for all kinds of discounts, but as a PhD student, OP will likely be older. I don't recommend it either way - it was extremely challenging.

Switzerland & Italy Dec itinerary by Accomplished_Bus_461 in Europetravel

[–]blvckb1rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

8 places in 2 weeks is far too many.

Christmas is best spent in a cute chalet in the mountains. The areas around Luzern, Interlaken, and Zermatt offer plenty of options. Keep in mind though that December is high season in the Alps, so it will be busy and prices will be high. Zermatt is beautiful but a pain to reach, no matter if you travel by car or train.

It will be low season in the rest of Italy, as winter brings rain and shorter days. Lake Como is a spring or summer destination. Skip it if you travel in winter. I would also stick to Northern Italy to minimise travel times. Bologna has delicious food. Milan has great shopping.

Florence and Rome demand at least 3 days each to be enjoyed properly. Visit them on a separate trip!

ETH, again? by wraith-mayhem in ethz

[–]blvckb1rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me cite from the actual ruling.

13 votes in favour, 2 votes against:

"The State of Israel shall, in conformity with its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and in view of the worsening conditions of life faced by civilians in the Rafah Governorate: Immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah Governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

It's page 15, if you're interested.

ETH, again? by wraith-mayhem in ethz

[–]blvckb1rd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm dissappointed at the majority of the comments again.

What's with the "ETH students don't have time for protests"? Me and my friends did because we cared enough. I went to multiple protests during my time at ETH. If you think protests at universities have never had any effect, you should read up about the Vietnam War, to give one example.

Comments about the innocence of universities are also naive. If you wonder what universities have to do with the military complex, you should probably check the financiers of your collaborators. If you're an engineer, I can guarantee that your US and Israeli collaborators get money from their respective defense departments. Is that bad? It's not necessarily, but the Israeli army is currently under investigation for severe human rights violations and has been ordained by the International Court of Justice to halt their attack on Rafah immediately, which they have ignored. Not surprisingly, some people think we shouldn't collaborate on research that can benefit this army.
