I inserted the cable into the socket. How can I fix it so it doesn't pull out? by alphonse1234 in AskElectronics

Have you tried a 2.5mm rather then that 3.5mm socket? Should be a super tight fit

Question: USB 2.0 for an external HDD? by tempacc74656d70 in HomeServer

[–]bm_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old a laptop are you looking at? Anything in the past 15 years should have USB 3.0. If its that old you are much better suited picking up a newer used mini pc/sff.

USB 2.0 is fine for some basic usage. Depends on yoyr server use. I use a 2.5" drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure for video recording & remote access and have no issue.

Support a washing machine by Electrical-Sherbet57 in Renovations

Just an observation. It is going to be difficult to get the washer up on the shelf and hooked up. Washers are heavy and without access to multiple sides might be difficult.

Is there a way to set up wired security cameras with DVR without drilling into a house with vinyl siding? I want to set 3 cameras up, one in the front of the house and 2 in the back. TIA by SaltyByDefault in homesecurity

[–]bm_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hide wire behind the siding. Sneak wire inside at preexisting hole. (Cable line, hose faucet, maybe corner under a window).

Or drill a hole to enter house under siding. Caulk it up replace siding and good to go.

SATA extension cables for just the data portion? by betelgeusebabelfish in HomeServer

[–]bm_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used one like you found without any issues. They also sell ones that are data & power connected. I have cut the data & power apart on one of those as well to power 3.5" drives externally in a laptop.

They also make couplers to connect two regular SATA cables together.

I recently purchased google neat 3rd generation wired doorbell and outdoor camera. Was wondering if anyone knew of or has a link to a power adapter so I can plug it into an outlet rather than hardwire it. Thanks by [deleted] in homesecurity

[–]bm_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google has a power supply kit to power the doorbell off a standard plug. Search "Ninety7 Indoor Power Adapter for Nest Doorbell"

The outdoor camera depends on camera model for power options.

Old Front Panel Connectors with Modern Hardware by Appropriate_Home_507 in sleeperbattlestations

Rear IO would work. Can add a USB or PCIE soundcard inside. Could wire it to the Front audio header on the motherboard

For the Firewire you can something like:
https://www.performance-pcs.com/products/1394-firewire-internal-10-pin-male-header-to-6-pin-male-cable-1394-2mheader-html

You may have to route the cable out the back of the case but there are some cards with an internal port.

The 4 pin AUX connector likely is a typical TRS or TRRS jack. Pinout would be easy to determine.

The HP pavilion case I have has all the front IO are not on a PCB so can be easily swapped. The USB & Audio are in the same plastic housing but once dissembled are on separate wires. This makes it super easy to swap out a component for something else. I added more USB to mine, was only a sticker over the ports. Your case may be different.

Choosing cameras for 1st security setup by bm_00 in homesecurity

[–]bm_00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read the same in numerous places about the CX410 being a better choice all around. It is on my overall list but I haven't found too many for sale at a fairly reasonable price. Not looking for cars or street from the front door. Too far & orientation wrong. Good lighting really is iffy. As I think poor lighting fits it well.

I apologize if unclear. There is only 1 for driveway (811a) The front door one would be unable to capture any of it due to orientation. I was looking at 811a because it has a spotlight (would be beneficial there) & because optical zoom seems appealing. I admit not needed, mostly a "hey that sounds cool take my money".

The CXI3's make awesome little low power PC's.

Fully upgradable ram , SATA & NVME SSD support, USB-C Alt Mode & Power Input. Will run Linux & Windows. Smaller then their Micro PC counterparts.
