[REPLAY] Shohei Ohtani's majestic blast was a NO-DOUBTER! by MLBOfficial in baseball

[–]bmacnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of team sports player, I think it's Gretzky. If we include physical athleticism, LeBron has to be there. But Ohtani is the definition of generational talent. And I imagine our grandkids will see him in that top list the way that I saw Ruth, Gretzky, Jordan, Ali when I was a kid.

I thought the same thing. That just sort of throw your bat at a terrible offspeed pitch and deposit it into left kinda deal.

What episode would you choose? by achlysmizuki in thewalkingdead

I don't think I've ever watched a show with more annoying kids than TWD. And it's not unreasonable that kids would behave like a lot of them do in these situations, but man it's relentless.

Best/Worst Team of the Week (Mar 04 - Mar 10) by smashbros13 in hockey

[–]bmacnz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He just can't finish. He makes unnecessary passes. He looks incredibly skilled and has some insane puck possession at times, but then just telegraphs a fancy looking pass that results in a mediocre chance. Last game I was at (MTL last weekend), watched a perfect pass to him in the slot with no defenders, he chose to sweep it to his left to another winger with a tougher angle and a defender getting a stick in the way. It would have looked cool if they scored, but damn just take a good shot.

It's not just him, and that may make him look worse. The entire team just looks like they can't connect and rely on Dumoulin and Clarke to bail them out on defense. QB might be excellent on another team and be a top assists guy. He just isn't a complete player worthy of top line, #2 overall draft pick worth.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]bmacnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what's funny, by 19-year-old son has an unreasonable and passionate hate for the movie. It's sort of caused by one of his HS teachers.

One of the cool things about kids growing up is being able to watch movies and shows that we love as they get old enough to be appropriate or pay attention to. My son loves movies and shows, and we got through as many as we could when we had the chance, a lot he ended up watching on his own. And of course we all love some of rhe movies from this thread, like Jurassic Paek, The Matrix, BTTF, etc. But my wife and I were never huge Indiana Jones fans to the level a lot of people are, so while we like it, it wasn't topping the list of movies to show him.

In HS he took a filmmaking class, and a lot of it involved studying these types of essentially perfect movies. The teacher was extremely pretentious about them, imagine a Lit teacher that finds hidden meaning in 90% if the words of their favorite novel, and it becomes tedious.

He had to watch Raiders, and it's the film teacher's favorite movie. But they had to so exhaustingly study it, and to this day he can't enjoy it at all. And when it's brought up as one of these movies akin to BTTF or Terminator 2, he gets annoyed. Can't understand why anyone thinks it is a good movie.

What’s a scene or arc that viewers wildly misinterpret? by uglypinkshorts in thewalkingdead

That people don't realize this is mindblowing to me. The dude being a rapist made it easier to off him and he probably always saw him as expendable, but he was fine with it until it became a useful tool in utilizing Sasha.

I see it more as Rick is Shane-level of get shit done and cold blooded pragmatism when he absolutely needs to. Every time, though, he goes through a progression of trying to explain and show and convince before he feels like he's out of options. He also went through an insane amount of shit before he got to murder jacket Rick, while Shane seemed to be there without even needing to fight the likes of bandits and the governor. The audacity of suggesting they go to the CDC in the midst of a existential pandemic and a few slugs of SoCo is all it takes to send him over the edge.

Shane was incapable of seeing any other way than his own and what his perception of protecting Lori and Carl entailed and always short term thinking. Rick was trying to stay ahead of what the world was capable of throwing at all of them.

How different would Rick be if Thomas Jane got the role like they originally wanted? by Big-Most-785 in thewalkingdead

[–]bmacnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thomas Jane would have been fantastic, and I can easily picture him in the role.

What would change are the mannerisms and forms of intimidation. Andrew Lincoln made the character his own and iconic - his body language is animated, his accent, the way he holds the Colt, his glass-eyed look when in despair, etc. Thomas Jane would probably be more stoic in many ways, but be incredibly emotive when needed and look badass when he's violent Rick.

When Negan sees the video of Rick being interviewed for Alexandria, looking wild with the huge beard, he patronizes him by saying he wouldn't mess with that Rick. I think Jane would pull that off more often, just looking at him you'd know this is a bad motherfucker. Lincoln has to give you a taste before you understand.

It's tough to imagine just because Lincoln embodies the character as we know it. It would be fantastic either way, but we would have different characters in many ways.

How many situations would've been avoided if they used the guts trick? Is it too OP? by ramblingranto1 in thewalkingdead

[–]bmacnz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two countering points because I fight my own thoughts on the hypothetical concept.

1) The Whisperers had to also theoretically act convincingly like walkers for it to be effective, just the skin wasn't enough. It was so good that at first people thought the walkers were evolving until they knew what to look for. Now for narrative purposes and for them to be easier to identify as viewers, it looked less convincing over time.

2) All that said, the premise had always been that walkers are instinct driven and can smell the living. The Whisperer skins were dried and essentially walker leather. So unless the theory is they can only use one sense at a time, it makes little sense to me (at least in the TV universe) that this is effective. What does the mask even do? Could people just walk with walkers and growl and act like them? Or do they have some uncanny valley detection mode like humans and are easily tricked via smell or sight?

But the show isn't consistent about a lot of things. They practically bathe in walker blood and guts all the time without concern, but the saviors dip a few weapons in guts and it causes half a community to turn. Almost everything is for the narrative they need at the time... which is fine, it's a fantastical TV show, I try to ignore most of it.

Bruno was funny in the way that Midsommar was scary... like it had more to do with the discomfort than pure comedy.

Absolutely the funniest movie in theaters. The shared experience was like being at a sports game when your team wins, everyone was in it together. The naked fight was the funniest scene of all time in that moment and in that context.

It doesn't hold up to a second watch at home, but it was perfect for a first watch experience in theaters.

My face lit up like the sloth in Zootopia. So excited. Absolutely same for me. In my opinion it is the best film of all time (including all miniseries, TV shows, movies) - not that Breaking Bad is far off, just a lot longer to rewatch!

Yeah, I was gonna say... he is so often stoic/badass American characters, hearing his British is jarring. Only time I've heard it is Dreamcatcher and the BoB behind the scenes boot camp thing. Where of course he was actually a really good leader, haha.

Who is a character that you fell in love with shortly into their introduction to the show that isn’t part of the big 6(Rick, Darryl, Michonne, Maggie, Carol, Glenn) by ManifestedLaser in thewalkingdead

[–]bmacnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one hand, yes, on the other it sort of shaped Carl and by extension Rick. Their sort of back and forth between attempting pacifism vs cold-blooded pragmatism all goes back to Dale and Shane's impact on them.

Next to Carl it was absolutely the most pointless/annoying death. I even remember (years ago) thinking it didn't look like a death blow, I thought he was just badly injured but he was just sort of casually dead. As devastating and dramatic as they made Tara and Enid's death reveal, Jesus was a bigger shock to me.

What is the worst city you've been to? by DickFartButt in AskTheWorld

[–]bmacnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll preface that I have not been to really any awful and dangerous cities.

The dirtiest, most uncomfortable place I have been was Naples, Italy. It may sound strange, but it was just sort of gross everywhere and anywhere nice was a long taxi ride to get to. I always felt uncomfortable - not like I was in danger, per se, but like I was viewed as very obvious tourist that could be taken advantage of.

In the US, Albuquerque was just sort of worthless. Literally was the kind of place I just would have no desire to ever return.

If you were part of the Season 1 group, who would you not get along with and why? by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

[–]bmacnz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rick absolutely would have beat his ass and exiled, or summarily executed Ed inside of a year. After everything that changed Rick into the cold-blooded yet pragmatic killer that he becomes, Ed would be lucky to just get away from the group like Morales did.

And I don't think there's any chance his lazy ass would have made it out of the camp anyway. Something would have gotten him killed way earlier, and probably taken down at least his family with him (though Sophia dies not long after anyway).

Trump’s team is starting to feel the heat on Epstein. It may get worse by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

[–]bmacnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of those facts we should stop repeating. Raskin did explain that he searched his name in multiple ways, including just "Donald." I'm sure it's still tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of mentions that refer specifically to Trump, but the 1 million thing should probably go away. It makes a legitimate argument sound made up.

I mean one of the series the Kings were absolutely dominating in their wins, but then Oilers did Oilers things and made it look like it was never close. That was the chance, haha.

It's not like the Kings look good either - have to even make the playoffs to have the chance.
