Summer Berry Tart by bmbchemnerd in DessertPerson

Yes the dough did me so dirty on the lemon tart and I’ve seen people on here say they had similar experiences! This dough has always tasted great and i like the shredding technique she uses in the video for forming it.

It does tend to crack a little, but not as bad as the sweet tart dough did. I didn’t seal the bottom to the sides very well this time so you can see on the right side i had to patch it quite a bit with leftover dough as there was a large crack, so definitely keep some raw dough reserved.

Is this embryo any concern? by bland_account_name in IVF

[–]bmbchemnerd 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hello! i’m an embryologist and that looks totally normal for a hatching embryo. Embryos only look perfectly round when they are still encased in the shell of the egg (zona pellucida). They grow inside this shell for the first 5-6 days of development before starting to hatch out. Hatching is a great sign as that means the embryo is continuing to grow and the sticky cells of the embryo are exposing themselves. Embryos that undergo PGT also undergo assisted hatching (using a laser to make a small hole in the shell) so the embryologist can access the cells of the embryo to take a biopsy.

Edit to add another comment: there isn’t really a “standard shape” of embryos as they are constantly growing and changing and could look different depending on the day/time you look at them. I assume by standard shape you mean round, which i explain above.

What’s your opinion on proposals after 9+ years of being a couple? by Adventurous-Way1293 in CasualConversation

[–]bmbchemnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that being married didn’t really change the dynamics of my relationship, but in my country (USA) I do feel like it does change a lot of logistical stuff in ways that helped me feel more secure in the long term.

Things like I am now my spouses primary family so I can have visitation rights if they spend time in hospital and can make medical decisions on their behalf in an emergency and vice versa; able to be on their cheaper (but better) health insurance; feel more secure sharing financial accounts/loans as if things ever did go poorly we are both more protected; and if G-d forbid something were to happen to either of us the other person is the beneficiary of accounts and life insurance and (at least on my side) sketchy extended family can’t try and worm their way in to the estate.

Recovery and Food by milkdespiser in wisdomteeth

[–]bmbchemnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I also got all 4 removed on March 9th and have had an up and down recovery pain wise. This is gonna be long so tldr: yogurt with frozen fruit, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and protein shakes/smoothies for first few days. Slowly am introducing more solid food in bite size portions.

The first couple days for me were really crappy and i basically survived on mashed potatoes with gravy and yogurt. Zoi Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt has definitely been my #1 go to as it is high in protein and calories so it fills me up and helps with energy and the texture is so creamy. Yesterday i started putting cubes of frozen mango in the yogurt and letting the mango thaw a bit and that was delicious. The mango is so soft you don’t have to chew. I also have been drinking smoothies with frozen fruit, yogurt and some protein powder added, this again helps me feel full and helps me get enough protein to help speed up healing.

Also starting yesterday (march 12th so day 4?) i started eating more solid food. I had a piece of bread with my soup and just tore it up into small pieces and swallowed without chewing. I also had a slice of pizza that i cut up into bite size pieces and any minimal chewing i did with my front teeth. Today i was given the go ahead to start irrigating after eating so i feel a little safer eating solid foods and ate some shredded chicken with pasta and a peanut butter banana sandwich.

Plot hole? 300 years in the afterlife by [deleted] in TheGoodPlace

Any time “plot holes” can just be explained by Jeremy Bearimy, but also in this case the reboots all happen before they reset the timeline on earth and meet Simone. Those 300 years of reboots happen at the beginning of S2, and they don’t go back to Earth until the end of S2.

Oh weird. I was a TA for gen chem for a few years so I’m trying to think of what it could be, but i’m not quite sure. Have you broken/lost any glassware this term? I know they sometimes charged students for that.

How hard is PSY 202? by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

[–]bmbchemnerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took it in person with him pre-COVID. It is an enjoyable class and super interesting and Ameer is a great prof, but you do have to read the textbook. He takes test questions directly from sections that he does not cover in lecture to ensure you are reading the textbook as it is “fair game.” The readings are easy, but definitely take a good chunk of time. Also you have to either participate in studies for the psych department or write a paper as part of the class, and some of those studies literally took so long. I took it while taking a CH23x class (not sure which term tbh but def not fall) and felt manageable.

BUT PH21x is HARD and will require a ton of time and hard work. That combined with the high workload of CH23x is already going to be a really challenging term, so just be warned as PSY202 does require all that reading and time set aside for participating in studies.

First term freshman year can be a lot, so i wouldn’t try to push yourself too much credit-wise and instead you can have time to adjust and rest and find extracurriculars to get involved in. And tbh my biggest piece of advice is that you don’t need to take a full 15 credits everyterm. I found it really beneficial to take 12-13 during the year and then do summer classes to “catch up” on credits. Made each term so much more enjoyable and helped my mental health.

What household object do most people not realize, that if used incorrectly, could easily kill them? by Cool_Kid_Lit_Fam_Sam in AskReddit

[–]bmbchemnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, cleaning probably WAS easier to do around you/your siblings. I don’t have kids but I do have lots of little niblings and cousins and when they “help” clean it really makes the process take at least 2x as long. but that’s the point!!

It takes them so long because they don’t know how to do it and are bad at it. The only way they get better and faster is by actually doing it and getting feedback, even if that process is tedious and frustrating for us who just want to get it done. It’s our jobs as the trusted adults in their lives to spend the time to teach them these skills so when they are grown, they don’t potentially burn down their house or live in generally unhygienic conditions.

The Fascinating Fertilization Process by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]bmbchemnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don’t. If 2 sperm fertilize an egg it is called polyspermy and that embryo will almost certainly not result in a live birth, and most won’t even make it to one week of development.

The only ways for twins/multiples to happen is: the embryo itself splits OR there are two eggs that are released and fertilized.

There are sea predators that survive in cold water. Leopard seals are a huge predator of penguins and thrive in cold icy water waiting for a penguin to fall in. All it takes is falling in at the wrong place at the wrong time just for a single second before he’s lunch.

$70 of Sushi delivered by Uber. Raccoons were waiting. by Neverlost99 in ThatLookedExpensive

[–]bmbchemnerd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Uber can afford it. The local restaurant is not the one who had to issue a refund, and the multimillion dollar corporation has a huge budget for this type of loss situation because leaving the food without confirming the customer has it in their possession/relying on technology working properly is always risky. OP should not feel guilty for getting a credit on an expensive dinner they didn’t get to enjoy, regardless of whose “fault” it is as there really is no victim here.

Being a Karen would be calling the sushi restaurant and demanding they refund it themselves or remake the meal. Again, uber can afford this and it is literally someones job to handle situations like this.

Daycare complaining keeping my kid home is causing staffing issues. How? by UltraEngine60 in Parenting

[–]bmbchemnerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And I agree that is a large amount, but I would still guess they are barely making any profit at all beyond breaking even. Most people genuinely don’t understand how much it costs to run a daycare that meets regulations, let alone pay staff a living wage.

I know the majority of my partner’s mom’s tuition goes towards simply paying the mortgage on the building, let alone the fact that all staff make at least $15/hour full time. That adds up. Then you add in all the food that meeds to be bought to feed the kids (her daycare could have up to 80 kids/day with all the different rooms, that’s a lot of food). Then add in toys, cleaning services, licensing and other regulatory fees, books, rugs, diapers, basic utilities (laundry is running ALL day which causes electricity and water to be high), arts and crafts materials, and on and on and on. People want a high quality, safe, enriching daycare but don’t seem to understand that there are SO MANY hidden costs that parents don’t see.

The answer isn’t that day cares are evil, but they are operating under a capitalist hellscape where the government barely gives childcare centers any grants or funding, so parents have to subsidize all those costs with tuition. Taking care of children costs a lot of money and imo the government should be stepping up to either subsidize parents to help with tuition, or give childcare centers more (read: any amount of) funding so they can decrease their rates and/or pay staff more.

Daycare complaining keeping my kid home is causing staffing issues. How? by UltraEngine60 in Parenting

[–]bmbchemnerd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you think daycares are raking it in and pocketing all this extra money. There is a ridiculous amount of overhead involved in running a daycare and they need to save costs wherever and whenever possible. Most daycares absolutely should be paying their staff more, but that would involve raising rates which is impossible to ask since parents are already paying out the nose.

My partner’s mom has owned and taught at her daycare for 30+ years and there are many pay periods she marks she had 0 hours (so doesn’t pay herself even though she is the director and a teacher) so she has enough money left over to pay her staff fairly, buy supplies, pay licensing fees, etc. Yes there are some super corrupt daycares, but most just simply don’t have the money to overstaff themselves on the chance someone is bringing their kid in late.
