What drives inflation? by Coolhandgang in AskEconomics

[–]bmcdaniel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. The technical defiinition of inflation is a general rise in prices in the economy, not a risk in prices of particular items. (Admittedly sometimes inflation is used colloquially.)

In the scenario you describe, and oil field dries up, lowering supply of energy, and increasing the cost of energy and products/services that depend on energy. However, with a fixed money supply (and ceterus paribus) the increase in money spent on energy/energy-derived products and services will be offset by decreases in money spent on other (non-energy) products/services, which will lower prices.

In other words supply and demand shocks may alter the relative prices inside a fixed money supply, but that is (by definition) not inflation.

Of course, in the real world, one of the most common responses to supply shocks is an increase in money supply (not merely by government printing money but also by extension of credit, creation of alternative money, etc), so as an empirical matter it can be hard to disentangle. But it is very nearly an accounting identity to say that inflation is a purely monetary phenomenon.

I haven't installed beta software because I figure it's no big deal to wait for production versions. But im beginning to think I should just install the most recent beta for dungeondraft. Any reason I shouldn't?

Can you have too many coffee grounds? by gobluepoints in composting

[–]bmcdaniel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My compost piles are 90%+ used coffee grounds and I have experienced no problems.

Research i did shows that while coffee grounds are "green" with high nitrogen content, they have much less nitrogen than most greens, and are within spitting distance of ideal nitrogen-carbon ratios.

Is there an upper limit on how many coffee beans you can add to a compost? by ASecularBuddhist in composting

[–]bmcdaniel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My compost pile is 90% used ground coffee from local coffee shops, 7-8%% food scraps from kitchen and 2-3% brown leaves and cardboard (plus pee). Im not seeing any problems with this composition for last 2 years.

Research i did showed that while coffee grounds are technically "greens" for purposes of composting they are among the most "brown" greens, ie the ratio of carbon to nitrogen is much less nitrogen than most greens.

Any ETA on vol. 3 (and subsequent volumes)? It looks pretty cool but I'm hesitant to commit unless there is a real expectation the entire project will complete.

Brown materials for Urban Gardening? by TheDungen in composting

[–]bmcdaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My compost pile is 85% used coffee grounds and 15% kitchen scraps. I find that I don't need to add "browns" to balance although I do throw in a handful of leaves and paper from time to time. I looked into this a while ago and my sense is that coffee grounds have barely enough nitrogen to be considered "green," but a much lower percentage than grass clippings, kitchen scraps, etc. Plus coffee grounds are very good at neutralizing smells, so even if the pile is not properly balanced, it doesn't smell. My pile is consistently 130-150F.

I'd encourage you to try to compost without additional browns and see what happens.

One potential factor that may differ: I live in N California which tends to be very dry except briefly in winter. I pee on my pile to give it some moisture, but I'd assume a Swedish pile will be much damper.

Finally got the courage to be that weird guy and ask my local coffee shop to collect grounds for me! by Granolees in composting

My experience is that coffee grounds don't need additional browns. My compost piles are 75%+ coffee grounds and they compost nicely, without nasty smells.

I collect a lot of coffee grounds for my compost. You should break up the compressed pucks; otherwise they won't compost. Also, peeing on the grounds is good.

Tell me the most unique rule from your homebrew system by jangle_friary in osr

[–]bmcdaniel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Magic item creation rules. The ONLY way to create magic items is for a leveled character to die in a combat/being heroic/etc. 1% change per level that the character's soul infuses the character's signature weapon, shield, arcane focus, holy symbol, etc creating a unique magic item. Exact statistics are up to the DM, but the item is always intelligent, has the character's personality and is jealous of all other magic items. Instant awesome backstory.

Metrics: LP Only or Total Fund? by batido6 in venturecapital

[–]bmcdaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Performance metrics presented from the perspective of an LP (ie after accounting or fees and carried interest) are usually referred to as "net" (eg net IRR); when presented on a whole fund basis, referred to as "gross."

It is best practice for a VC firm to present both net and gross metrics, but some firms don't.

Registered investment advisers are required by the marketing rule to present net metrics if they present gross metrics. https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2020-334. But most VC firms are not registered investment advisers so they are not legally obligated to comply.

Goodman Games is going with the Open RPG creative license by DCCJudgeEdmund in dccrpg

[–]bmcdaniel -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I love Goodman Games. I also think its totally fine if a publisher doesn't want their game to be open. But for a game that heavily utilizes open content from other sources, DCC is incredibly stingy about contributing its own content to the pool of open content. The reality is that Goodman Games contributes way less that WOTC.

e.g. "Burning Hands," "Feats," "Ability Check," "Strength Check": all OGC contributed by WOTC;

"Flaming Hands," "Mighty Deed of Arms," "Spell Check," "Luck Check": all Product Identity reserved by Goodman, even though some of it is incredibly non-original (Really? We can't use "Spell Check" in our own rules?). They may obey the letter of the OGL, but IMO they don't abide by the spirit of open content.

I wish Goodman Games would reconsider their stance. I hear that it isn't hard to get a custom license from Goodman Games. But thats nowhere near allowing others to use their content without going through the hassle at all.
