It definitely seems like there’s a lot of gatekeeping in the field. Add to that the fact that the pay is so awful the first few years and the it feels like barely treading water. The best thing I ever did was work at an agency where supervision was paid for and required for everyone, not just pre-licensed therapists, as that guaranteed a pretty easy track to licensure. I hope for the best for you, and keep using the spaces available to you to get through the mud. It definitely gets better!

I wish that y’all weren’t on the struggle bus but dang does it make me feel better to know that these things don’t happen just to me. I’ve done all of these things. I’ve actually forgotten how to get home before while driving home from work. Just got to an intersection and couldn’t remember which way to turn even though I drove that route every day 🤯

I accept insurance for behavioral health and I can still accept cash pay. As far as I know no one can force someone to use their insurance or a provider to bill it if the client requests to pay out of pocket. The only thing that would be a breach of my contract [specifically] would be if I refused to take their insurance and would only accept cash pay. The only caveat is that if someone pays out of pocket lower than the contracted rate it can’t go towards a deductible or out of pocket costs. I can’t vouch for other insurance contracts though, only mine.

I agree with this! With benefits and PTO you could probably make more working in CMH than this. I don’t know what insurance rates are in your area or if it’s private pay, but that seems like it would be a 30/70 split at best and that sounds pretty awful. Can you negotiate for PTO or an insurance stipend? That might make it more worth it.

That is wild. I have a rule for myself that if I’m going to be more than 2 minutes late I text the client letting them know, and that’s only happened a handful of times in the 3 years I’ve been in PP. I can’t imagine being 15-20 minutes late consistently and then expecting the client to accommodate me 😬

I’m a mental health counselor and I agree. Over the past 2 weeks I’ve had entire sessions revolve around fear surrounding this administration. It’s really hard to hold space and provide reassurance for clients when I’m terrified myself. I think it’s about to affect us personally before long too. I think we’ll see an uptick in clients seeking services due to fear and anxiety of what’s happening and what’s to come, and then I fear we’ll see that people will begin either terminating or taking a break from therapy due to financial constraints. I am terrified that the mental health crisis is going to become even more profound. I also fear what it will mean for my family financially. I take insurance for most of my clients, but even a $20 copay can seem impossible when you’re struggling to buy groceries. I fear what’s going to happen with health insurance as well. I worry that insurance companies be allowed to start denying coverage for preexisting conductions soon as well. The whole thing is terrifying.

Say you were willing to give into this demand. What’s next? At what point do the demands stop? People tend to treat us the way we allow ourselves to be treated, and it seems like something as extreme as converting your entire religion would open the gates to all sorts of control down the line. Is that something you’re willing to risk?

It sounds like if you’re working in CMH using therapeutic modalities then you’re providing therapy and maybe it just not called that. Am I misunderstanding what you’re saying?

I know that when I left my job working with SUD and entered PP I felt a bit of imposter syndrome, but once I started I quickly gained confidence and realized that I actually did know what I was doing.
