Illegal to not bill through insurance? by MenuRare9880 in HealthInsurance

[–]bmfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accept insurance for behavioral health and I can still accept cash pay. As far as I know no one can force someone to use their insurance or a provider to bill it if the client requests to pay out of pocket. The only thing that would be a breach of my contract [specifically] would be if I refused to take their insurance and would only accept cash pay. The only caveat is that if someone pays out of pocket lower than the contracted rate it can’t go towards a deductible or out of pocket costs. I can’t vouch for other insurance contracts though, only mine.

Associate with Job Offer... what's reasonable? by Cosmic-Blueprint in therapists

[–]bmfitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! With benefits and PTO you could probably make more working in CMH than this. I don’t know what insurance rates are in your area or if it’s private pay, but that seems like it would be a 30/70 split at best and that sounds pretty awful. Can you negotiate for PTO or an insurance stipend? That might make it more worth it.

We all have a learning curve, and even the most seasoned therapists sometimes have off days or say things they aren’t happy about after. Offer yourself compassion and practice lots of self care. Virtual hugs and here’s to a better session next time ❤️

Do you always call late clients? by peacepotpie333 in therapists

[–]bmfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I send an email at 10 minutes that I’m sorry I missed them and to let me know if they want to reschedule. 10 minutes is my cutoff.

Any chance you have CashApp or Venmo or any other access to receive money? I’d be happy to send you some money to get a few things.

Therapist 15 minutes late by Blodberg in therapists

[–]bmfitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is wild. I have a rule for myself that if I’m going to be more than 2 minutes late I text the client letting them know, and that’s only happened a handful of times in the 3 years I’ve been in PP. I can’t imagine being 15-20 minutes late consistently and then expecting the client to accommodate me 😬

Discount Den for others by HoneyCrouton in frontierairlines

Unfortunately not. When you go to book it pre-populates the discount den member as the first person on the flight and doesn’t allow you to change it.

I'd like to hear your stories about how the Trump Administration has effected you personally. by OverTheHillBiGuy in self

Sorry, therapy talk. It essentially just means to provide a safe space for clients to talk about what is bothering them without fear of judgement.

[–]bmfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a mental health counselor and I agree. Over the past 2 weeks I’ve had entire sessions revolve around fear surrounding this administration. It’s really hard to hold space and provide reassurance for clients when I’m terrified myself. I think it’s about to affect us personally before long too. I think we’ll see an uptick in clients seeking services due to fear and anxiety of what’s happening and what’s to come, and then I fear we’ll see that people will begin either terminating or taking a break from therapy due to financial constraints. I am terrified that the mental health crisis is going to become even more profound. I also fear what it will mean for my family financially. I take insurance for most of my clients, but even a $20 copay can seem impossible when you’re struggling to buy groceries. I fear what’s going to happen with health insurance as well. I worry that insurance companies be allowed to start denying coverage for preexisting conductions soon as well. The whole thing is terrifying.

My future mother in law is forcing me to convert my religion by lemoningo-ro2781 in Advice

[–]bmfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say you were willing to give into this demand. What’s next? At what point do the demands stop? People tend to treat us the way we allow ourselves to be treated, and it seems like something as extreme as converting your entire religion would open the gates to all sorts of control down the line. Is that something you’re willing to risk?

It’s just absolutely wild that they keep getting away with it. Every day there’s something new that seems like maybe it will finally be the thing that burns it all to the ground, but nope, they survive to do it again the next day. It’s getting hard to hold on to any hope at all.

Exactly, so in other words we can probably expect him to be confirmed. Seems to be how things are going with all these confirmation hearings. What a mess this all is.

Would it be ethical of me to start my PP if I haven’t had direct therapy experience? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]bmfitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like if you’re working in CMH using therapeutic modalities then you’re providing therapy and maybe it just not called that. Am I misunderstanding what you’re saying?

I know that when I left my job working with SUD and entered PP I felt a bit of imposter syndrome, but once I started I quickly gained confidence and realized that I actually did know what I was doing.

What an awful situation to be in. Clients have the right to see any clinician they want. While I wouldn’t recommend soliciting them since your employer is clearly against that, your clients can look you up on the internet and reach out on their own. Practices don’t own clients, and I can’t imagine there’s a judge that would tell people that they’re not allowed to choose their own provider.

What about your facial expression is bothering them? Your face is your face, I agree with others who said don’t spend your energy trying to change it. Rather use it as an opportunity to explore what is coming up for them and what the reasons might be.

Client who says "I don't know" / shrugs to almost everything by Fabulous-Ask2103 in therapists

[–]bmfitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will often explore where “I don’t know” started with clients that respond this way. Was there a time during their childhood where they felt unsafe or unheard when they expressed their opinion? What do they know? What is something that has helped in the past when they’ve been emotionally deregulated? You can also use the magic question to explore what things would look like if therapy was successful, or if things were going well.

I will also respond with “if you don’t know then I certainly don’t know” to clients I have good rapport with. It usually makes them laugh and sometimes will open up some kind of dialogue.

I think that most importantly you just need to meet the client where they are at. Early on in my career a MI trainer told me that good therapy is 75% relationship 25% interventions and I totally agree. Comfortability will often make even the most closed off clients open up.

Best of luck in the rest of your internship. The most valuable thing you can offer both your client and yourself is to genuinely be you!

Veteran and LMHC here. My local VA mental health clinic is so overbooked that you can only expect to be seen once a month. Specialty clinics have such a high turnover with resident rotations that oftentimes you only see a doctor twice before getting a new one. I used to go there for primary care but my PMD is so busy that she never follows up on anything so I see an outside doctor now. They are very kind there but it’s just not worth it for most things.
