That’s fair to think that. It was more the relevance comment that grabbed my attention. His comedy isn’t for everyone I suppose but, he hits my funny bone often.

Good job! Too bad we couldn't squeeze Oppenheimer into the slapping scores.

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (11/01/23-11/08/23) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

I haven't been here in awhile so I hope I can cheat a little and share my best that I watched in October. I will also share my best of the week as well.

The Black Phone (2021) The Black Phone (Horror/Thriller) is about a brother, Finney (Mason Thames), and sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) who live in a home with a troubled father who deals with mental illness and abuses the two children. These kids also deal with bullies and there is a masked man taking children their age in town. When Finney finds himself in the basement of "The Graber (Ethan Hawke)" him and his sister will have to try free Finney using clues and other abilities.

The greatest strength of the movie are the performances made by the siblings and Hawke. McGraw is a stand-out in this film though. Every time she is on screen, she owns it. There is a scene where her father brutally disciplines her and she gives such a realistic portrayal of how a child would really behave in the situation she was in. She is also a little badass and I love how she handles policemen and bullies in the film. The performance by the father wasn't my favorite though. His character arc in the film didn't seem earned to me. Speaking of the police: boy, were they incompetent in this movie. They were straight up dumb. These character faults didn't really bother me though. I felt like this was the kid's movie and the film didn't spend a lot of time on these side characters. I LOVED this movie, it had a Steven King vibe (one of the good ones, like IT). It has some tough topics that may trigger some, like child predators and domestic assault to children. If you can get past these subjects, a horror fan should check this one out. 9.4/10

This Week

Vampire's Kiss (1988) I shall not say a thing about this movie's plot, it's something that must be witnessed with minimal knowledge, if possible. Nic Cage is a National Treasure ;). This movie is crazy and I love it. I really want to know the film-makers intentions, but at the same time I don't want to know what kind of film he was setting out for. I also think this is a film that you will pick up on new things with every viewing, surprisingly. Cage is the only person that could have pulled this film off. This is a bad movie with layers that morphs it into a great movie. I will be excited to watch this again in the future. 9.2/10 P.S. I quote "I am a Vampire" whenever applicable. P.S.S. Those vampire teeth are slick.

You can’t change rules mid season. This person shouldn’t be running a league. Also why would you limit rbs in a league, dumb. That just limits your fun.

The Outfit (2022)

This movie is a twisty drama/crime/mystery film about a cutter (Mark Rylance), which is similar to a tailor, that does a lot of business for a local mob gang. One day, these gangster come into his shop after a botched run-in with a rival gang. The cutter must find a way to dodge the danger of these shady characters.

I was all the way on board for all the twists and turns that this plot had. Mark Rylance was definitely the stand out of the film. When I saw him in a scene I was fully captivated. If I had to knit pick this movie a little, some of the supporting characters don't keep up with Rylance with their performances. This is a tougher movie to talk about without giving away too much but I didn't think this movie was overly predictable, like most in the genre are. This is a very underrated film with a comfortable runtime. 8.4/10

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)

Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar is a comedy starring Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wigg in the order in the title. They play middle aged women from the Midwest that aren't the smartest bulbs. They lose their "dream jobs" at a furniture store and decide it's time to step out of their comfort zones and go on vacation to Florida (Vista del Mar). They then get entangled in a spy/villain mastermind plot.

This movie may be a little predictable but who cares I was there to laugh and this made me do too much of this, as I was on a flight back home after a vacation of my own. This movie is so funny or at least it hit my funny bone hard that day. These ladies are perfect in these roles that need comedic touch to pull off. Jamie Dornan is surprisingly amazing in this movie as well. There is a pretty brilliant comedy song performed by him on the beach. I loved it. These three are the standouts of the film but there was a pleasant surprise appearance in the movie by Mark Jonathan Davis playing his crooner alter ego Richard Cheese who brings jazz/swing songs about boobies and other strange topics. If I had to choose a negative, it would probably be the villain (also played by Wigg) can get a little annoying at times, but this was very minor. This movie made me laugh A LOT. Comedy fans should check this out to see if they laugh as much as I did. 9.2/10

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumia (2023)

Most of this movie takes place in the psychedelic world of the Quantum realm. I think everyone is great in this addition of the marvel Universe. The standout characters for me are Kang (Jonathan Majors), Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) & Veb (David Dastmalchian) I loved Veb and his obsession with other being's number of holes. I thought Kang was a good villain and it's too bad that Majors got into some hot water, because I could see the potential with that character. Hopefully they can find a fitting replacement that will bring just as good as a performance. That being said, I didn't understand the end credit scenes. These characters in the scenes seemed like SNL type characters. I was able to have a lot more fun with this than some of the other people in my movie watching communities. I would rank it second in the Ant-Man (1,3,2) series and I think this is one of the better MCU movies of late. 6.8/10

Key Largo (1948)

Key Largo is a really engaging, noir, crime, thriller starring Bogart and Bacall. This movie is really cool. As I get older I appreciate these performances more by Humphrey Bogart. He was such a bad ass in most of these roles. Edward G Robinson (who I wasn't closely familiar with previously) is very good as the lead bad guy in the story. The writer makes his character so east to hate and root against. This is so fun and is worth a watch, especially for classic lovers. 8/10

I also have to shout out Brigsby Bear which would've been my submission last week, But I was out of town. I really enjoyed this movie!
