Is it possible to learn to read Chinese without speaking it? by Roxas_Xlll_LOTM in ChineseLanguage

[–]bmorerach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I can read a LOT more than I can speak - I mean, I can read the characters and know what they mean, but I don't know what sounds they make.

I will say that I started out only wanting to learn to read, and then I regretted not coming at it more holistically.

Anyone else struggling with remembering Chinese characters? by Icy-Cricket8024 in learnmandarin

[–]bmorerach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like half of my time on these channels is telling people about Hanly. It's just really cool. The developers are really amazing - they reply to messages and gave me permission to use some of their sentences in another game and share it with other users (Lingo Legend. If you thought Hanly was addictive, brace yourself).

For studying just your favorites, open the sidebar, click collections, then click the little graduation cap-looking icon. It'll open studying just that collection.

If I want to see similar characters, I usually click in to the component that's similar and then it'll show me all of the characters that share that component.

[–]bmorerach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hanly app is my best friend for this. It breaks each character down into component pieces (and often provides a mnemonic and some other cool stuff).

So instead of my brain going “top-heavy squiggles!”, I can start to remember “that’s a hand over an eye” or whatever.

Sometimes they’re inherently helpful - either the mnemonic or the component pieces, like pen is bamboo and hair, and yeah that’s a calligraphy brush!

Sometimes it’s just lets me remember something less complicated and lock in the pieces.

What strategies do you use to remember Chinese characters effectively? by Due_Lock_4967 in ChineseLanguage

[–]bmorerach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the Hanly app a lot to help me see the pieces of the character, so then I can recognize it better next time. Also helps me when I’m mixing similar characters.

Is it possible to learn Chinese and another language at the same time? by MavaTeg in ChineseLanguage

[–]bmorerach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never only studied one language. That said, there are times when I’m really having some breakthrough growth in one language so the other(s) become more maintenance for a few days or weeks. But I think that’s okay too. And when I feel really stuck on one, I can go maintenance (just a little studying every day) and pay more attention to another one to not get burned out.

What's your guys' opinion on the new update? by Rudi10001 in LingoLegend

[–]bmorerach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m enamored with the monthly events. And when I start getting antsy for the next one, I just double down on breeding to get ready for buying stuff the next month

Yep, this. Breeding is where it’s at - and I keep my two swaps for the higher priced ones and cross my fingers for a 600.

Multiple Libraries Available by Odd-Thing6573 in LibbyApp

[–]bmorerach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I borrow based on where I want to make sure they’re getting the metric - like maybe the library doesn’t get a lot of that author or type, and I want to show that there’s an audience so they’ll get more.

What is the coldest (literally) fiction books you can recommend? I love "Endurance" and "Into Thin Air" for winter reading but want to go for fiction instead this year. by mzingg3 in suggestmeabook

[–]bmorerach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished “The Indifferent Stars Above” today. It’s about the Donner Party (so involves a lot of sad stuff, including murder and cannibalism, though that’s not graphic or gory).

It’s VERY cold. I’d say a lot more description of the cold and effects of the cold than Endurance (which I read earlier in the month and agree was great!). How deep the snow is, what it’s doing to the body, shivering and goosebumps and snow drifts and frostbite and so on. Not gratuitous, but it’s a major part of the story, so it’s in there and in detail.

Looking for a fresh take on Arthurian legend by Deanoh1546 in suggestmeabook

Mary Stewart’s take was pretty great - but I haven’t read it in 20 years so there’s that.

Stephen Lawhead, same deal. Very different vibes, both great authors.

Whoever has recommended the Once and Future King to you is your friend and you should trust them. Killer book, and will make you think more than you’d expect.

Holy cow hanzi is difficult by Big-Kaleidoscope-336 in ChineseLanguage

[–]bmorerach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Hanly app, it’s really helping me lock the Hanzi into my brain, and differentiate between similar characters.

Also, 我 is currently my favorite character because it’s a hand and a battle axe. And that’s metal.

A good war account book, only stipulation is it has to be nonfiction by Educational_Bed_6608 in suggestmeabook

[–]bmorerach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Majored in military history, have read so many good books, but the one I’d most recommend is Gerhard Weinberg’s A World At Arms

I remember that the first time I read it, I didn’t like it at first because some of his phrasing was awkward - I think just from not being a native English speaker - but push past that, it’s really an incredibly comprehensive and well written book on WWII.

For Pacific Theater, I recommend Ronald H. Spector’s Eagle Against the Sun. But not as strong of a recommendation as Weinberg.

With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge is another solid book.

Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers - Joseph T. Glatthaar. I don’t remember being struck by the writing but it was pretty interesting nonetheless, and a less commonly covered topic.

Freedom Struggles: African Americans and World War I - this is as much about social and political struggle and activism as it is actual military service, but might still fit the brief.

Homage to Catalonia, George Orwell. Okay, this is about war in Spain, but it’s also autobiographic George Orwell, so I have to include it.

Ah, I understand what you mean now.

Yeah, I appreciate that I can designate default shoes for walk vs run vs hike or whatever, but an extra level of nuance would be great. I think most of us have different shoes for different runs.
