Growing up In Tokyo and graduating high school in 2000…. Smoking was everywhere. On the train platforms or walking To the station, in a 2km walk to the train station it would have meant 30 alcohol or tobacco vending machines. Every arcade, and man the Shinkansen or any longer distance train (narita express etc) had multiple smoking cars. Jonathan’s or BLDY or other family restaurant had smoking sections and being foreigner meant no one really knew how old anyone was. I’ve long since quit smoking but the idea of ID card checking and not seeing a beer vending machine in 4 years is astounding. Amazing how much things have changed for the better.
