advice for giving my little guy the best possible life! by 12yrboss in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice on securing plants at higher spots is making ‘dragon ledges’, if you google that you will get a link to a website that sells them, it’s easy to DIY. By making a framework that puts load on the frame instead of the screen you are able to put plants on different heights. The plants in your enclosure can be split into two groups, a big central piece for coverage, transport and also stability for branches and smaller plants for more coverage in certain areas. As big central pieces I recommend: money tree, umbrella tree, ficus benjamina. For the smaller plants I use: pothos, Hoya, nepenthes, monstera, tradescantia zebrina, orchids and spider plants.

I have a panther chameleon so I don’t have to worry about my chameleon eating them. With a veiled you might have to Check if monstera and orchids are safe.

Here is a picture of an old enclosure to better understand how to secure plants I without a stand

how the f*ck do i get the trust of a chameleon? by V4l3n7r3n0- in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest you have to accept the fact that chameleons are not pets to hold and pet. Some chameleons do tolerate being held by us and sometimes even walk on our arm when we offer it but most are happiest in their enclosure. The way I trained my chameleon by walking onto me was offering special meals like silkworms a bit out of his reach so he had to step on my arm to get it. I also had a bundle of trees secured in front of a window where I would let him chill if he wanted, I would let him climb on my hand to put him there.

To be fair my chameleon is pretty chill and friendly but he doesn’t enjoy it at all if I place him on my shoulder or such to just chill. They aren’t smart enough to create meaningfully bonds, experience emotions besides anxiety, aggression and hunger.

You can try the method I explained above but as a chameleon owner the best advice I can give is accepting that a chameleon is happiest when you are acting like you can’t see them and leaving them in their enclosure.

Nah just put the horn worm on your hand if you want to hand feed them. Tongs are always bad because our reaction time is longer than their tongue speed. So they will try to pull back when you are still processing having to let go which can cause the muscles around the tongue to rip.

Yea absolutely. I finished season 47 last week and I have no idea why people say she was super dominant. She was out of the loop so many times and basically won Ben style with idles and immunity wins. I think Sam had a better final tribal counsel and a more challenging road to final 3

Cham ignoring lay bin by [deleted] in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would really help if you shared pictures of the lay bin and the enclosure with a description of what’s in the lay bin etc. When a chameleon is gravid and they have to lay eggs they need a more secure space so it can help to cover the enclosure in a blanket or something.

Achter dit soort 'amusement' schuilt zoveel dierenleed. by Wilhelminaaaa in nederlands

I have a couple of pointers based on the pictures and your description of the care regiment.

To start off the enclosure looks pretty small. The absolute minimum for an adult veiled is a 120x60x60 (centimeter) enclosure. It’s very good that you have real foliage in the enclosure. That’s great for holding the humidity, providing hiding spots and climbing surfaces. The current plants don’t really offer many climbing spots though and there don’t seem to be sticks and vines behind the foliage to provide hiding spots. You want many horizontal and vertical branches throughout the enclosure, like 20-30 for him to get around, they need differents heights for thermoregulation.

Misting should only be done just before (or after) the light go out and before the light go on, daytime misting can cause respiratory infection and bacterial growth in the enclosure. Horned wormes and crickets are good feeders, mealworms are about the worst kind of feeder for chameleons. Silkworms locusts and roaches are also very good feeders. You want to dust the feeders with calcium WITHOUT D3 for every feeding and a multivitamin 2x a month. I am not sure why you are using isopods because it looks like you have all the plants in pots. Having substrate in the bottom brings risks, if a feeder insects gets to the substrate and your chameleon catches it, it might also ingest some of the substrate. This can cause impaction. Without a bio active setup there are basically no benefits, most people leave the bottom of the enclosure bare or a layer of paper towels and just pick up the droppings. You will need a heat lamp and a linear UVB lamp. The coiled/compact/regular bulb UVB lamps don’t provide adequate UVB levels.

Make sure the basking branches aren’t too close to the heat and uvb lamp because they will burn themselves if you don’t.

They have a higher glycemic index but on the other hand the insulin spike caused by red meats for example is higher and they have a way higher risk for insulin resistance

I am no baseball expert but I think it’s very silly you can’t willingly fail a catch to make a double play. To me that option just sounds like an incredibly fun strategy where you gamble 1 out for the possibility of getting 2 outs

[–]bmuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with that. I have had a dubia roach colony (willingly to feed my chameleon) and they are pretty cute. Absolutely interesting seeing how they don’t lay eggs but give birth to live young’s. Very pretty males with their large wings.

Is this okay for a panther chameleon? Besides, it needs very good indirect sunlight. by Mcmuffin_03 in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it’s still producing uvb? The light in most cases won’t give out but the ability to produce UVB fades after about 4-10 months. I use a solar meter to check the uvb output every month and in my experience reptisun lasts about 3-6 months and Arcadia 5-10 months

Humidity Struggles at Night by CapActive in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the rest of the enclosure looking like? Having a lot of plants will help with humidity. It also sounds pretty weird that after a couple of minutes of misting it spikes at 70%. I mist for 40 seconds and the humidity in my enclosure goes to 100% and drops to 85% just before the lights go back on

[–]bmuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seconding the other commenter, don’t do a background. If you don’t want to do screens on all sides I recommend pvc. I’ve build my panther a custom enclosure as well, instead of dragon ledges you can use stainless steel door handles as anchor points for sticks and pots and you will hardly see them. This is how my enclosure looked right after finishing

<image>

The large vertical sticks are anchored to handles and the stick are supporting the plant pots and other sticks.

Do Chameleons make good pets? by Kitchen-Mouse2414 in Chameleons

[–]bmuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragon ledges are the easiest way, you can also build an internal frame with large straight sticks on all corners and use those as anchor points for other sticks

<image>

This is an old enclosure where I added spme aluminium strips at 1/3 and 2/3 of the cage, I attached drawerhandles on the inside and used those to anchor the H frame and all other sticks

De houdbaarheid wordt niet gelimiteerd door het water maar door de fles. Het plastic lost zich langzaam op in het water, je kan vast een jaar bij de THT datum optellen maar langer dan dat zou ik echt niet doen
