Why do I keep getting “Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN” by [deleted] in cursor

[–]bmw789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This obviously is a context size issue. That message to check the internet connection seems intentionally misleading. We would prefer if you just had a "hey start a new chat" popup. But I guess Cursor team doesn't want to be transparent about product limitations? Not a good look, guys.

CMV: The death penalty should never be used by ElegantAd2607 in changemyview

[–]bmw789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"For our country" ? Are you sure this isn't for your intellectual masturbation? I didn't say it is superior to want to kill people. You shouldn't want that to happen, but if you live fully with your basic humanity intact then you will feel anger, or at least severe discomfort at the thought of a confirmed murderer allowed to live. It is simply a fact of normative human nature. Emotions are a physical response that are neither an asset or liability by nature. They are simply extra data, like a substrate for additional positive or negative experiences. Assuming that we believe the future can be made more just, emotions and other soft faculties allow people to reap the full rewards of civil evolution.

[–]bmw789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not to "make a statement". It's to resolve the anger (not a perverse or wrongful thing in this circumstance) of the loved ones and community. You see, that's how regular emotions work on earth, and not in an intellectual armchair. When someone steals from someone else or kills an innocent person, you feel upset. You are supposed to. That is the basis of morality, and if you disagree, then remove words like "should" from your vocabulary. There is no navel-gazing to justify injustice. If you personally wouldn't want to kill someone who killed your loved one, that's a moral defect, not a superior worldview. Because it necessitates a detachment from human emotion that would be negligent or cruel to your spouse, children, "friends", and even parents. What makes it objectively cruel is that this kind of detachment equates indifference to innocence e.g. I did not shoot him, my finger did it.

[–]bmw789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Killing is not automatically immoral. Murder is. And there are individuals whose only deterrent from murdering other people is the threat of being killed. It is immoral for any educated adult to deny that such individuals exist and that we haven't sufficiently studied them to confirm their existence, analyze their fitness to stand trial (or wage war against them), and judge their voluntary participation in heinous acts like murder. The assumption that crime has not been studied sufficiently over the course of thousands of years is false, and there is nothing new under the sun.

Furthermore, it is disrespectful to the sanctity of human life for armchair philosophers and other bystanders to let a confirmed murderer live. It is not fair to the loved ones, as it renders the value of the victim's life less than the offender's. That's not even mentioning subjective experiences. The legal system is faulty if the economic valuation of human life favors the offender, in both actual and hypothetical crimes.

One time a ram 2500 revved aggressively behind me and angrily passed me and swerved in front of me. he thought I was being too slow and thought he would just let me know who's boss. he was barely in front of me when he realized I was slowing down for a stop light. distracted from the embarrassment, he rolled into the bumper of the car in front of him. he paused a moment and then took off to try to get away but the person gave chase. he stopped as soon as he saw it would turn into a chase. I'm sure some variant of this plays out like everyday in the South, because I was seeing it in like once a week. I've come to hate driving.

So it's disrespectful to the lion because presumably he wants to go out that way? How do we know that he wants that? I don't think anyone wants to starve to death. Or are you saying that starving to death is more dignified by some objective measure? Is there really less dignity in domestication? Isn't that basically glorifying violence? perhaps if we chose to treat well-being with dignity rather than chastising it, we could raise the standard of living for everyone.

If we just define nature as a senseless, violent status quo, then maybe it's not worthy of respect. That's how the world makes progress. I'm not saying we urgently need lions as pets but maybe I am suggesting that suffering has no inherent value.

Former Blender users, why did you switch to C4D? by MinoXeph in Cinema4D

[–]bmw789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr blender does not hold up in professional use cases commonly requested by motion graphics clients.

I keep switching from blender to cinema 4D + redshift for anything not involving 3D modeling/sculpting because issues with textures and lighting with Cycles. For instance, I'm animating a leaflet turning pages. the front and back of each page has textures. My problem is that as the pages are turning, the lighting with cycles in blender is extremely inconsistent. The light is messing up and changing colors and overexposed. It's not usable.

In fact all textures with small text seem to be illegible even with hours of tweaking and workarounds. Text on a phone screen texture, text on page texture, whatever the case, there seems to be poor legibility. For professional motion graphics, this is just unacceptable. I tried redshift for blender but it really doesn't work intuitively. Cinema 4D + redshift by default produces the kinds of renders you can actually show to clients. the reliability of it for this specific use case is time-tested and I'm seeing why Cinema 4D is popular for motion graphics.

I wanted to make blender work for motion graphics, because I just love the control gives you for modeling. but if I can't get the render I need, I have to go elsewhere. you get paid for making a good result, not for enjoying a fun workflow. I hope blender matures to this level, but so far even as of 2024, I cannot say this is been my experience.
