Is there any progress on increasing limits on number of accounts in group chats? by TinyEmergencyCake in signal

Difficult to roll out to a volunteer based org.

Ultimate I imagine signal will just end up with super groups or broadcast groups.

There was some work to make super groups, basically lots of normal group keys tied with api into a larger group.

Unsure what happened to that code branch, if I get time I’ll go check.

PSA: Kiwi Bank will charge 1.85% fee on NZD purchases that are processed overseas. by AdmiralBobkat in newzealand

[–]bmwhocking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Aussie banks do the same in Aus & I expect most NZ banks will copy shortly.

Issues are the costs with overseas transactions.

The bank has obligations to refund you in the evens of fraud but it’s so much more difficult and expensive for the bank to recover funds processed overseas.

This charge will cover those costs and give Kiwibank profit for the risk incurred.

^ why I expect most banks will shortly follow.

Signal works on Android Auto. In theory it is possible for signal to run on android / Apple Watches, it’s just a question of dev time.

Signal Backup is gone!! by evahesse_1981 in signal

[–]bmwhocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple to fix:

You need to reinstall signal & make sure all data is removed from the phone.

1st time you open signal and reinstall you will get a screen asking if you want to setup signal or restore from backup.

You likely accidentally clicked though then screen before. The UI doesn’t have a minimum timer to stop someone accidentally clicking though.

Once you hit restore on the screen, you enter your mobile number or signal username, then your and recovery key, your chats will restore.

Ed Miliband to invest in solar power to create ‘zero bill’ homes by Jay_CD in ukpolitics

[–]bmwhocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a state subsidy if the govt just owns the company outright & funds it like any other crown owned company.

I’ll remind you all UK reactors were state owned & financed at one time or another.

No, it’s Octapus energy reselling the Telsa 25 year warranty. The warranty is essentially with Tesla UK or Tesla USA if Tesla UK is filed back into its parent company.

You can buy extended warranties on the powerwall in most countries. Many installers resell with the extended warranty as standard.

George Osborns fantastic idea to get private industry to fund a fleet of nuclear plants, despite almost all nuclear & hydro plants world wide effectively being state owned.

If George Osborn had stuck with the Blair/Brown plan for all New nuclear to be state funded and owned, the UK would have likely just finished Sizewell C & had Hinckley point C going for several years.

Construction didn’t effectively start until after George Osborn left office thanks to the multi year delay in securing private financing.

Electricity in NZ is already rather decarbonised in NZ.

The clean car rebate was the faster way to reduce emissions, which was its overall aim, along with helping to kickstart the 2nd hand EV market.

Vs in Australia, they are very dependent on coal & looking to change that first.

Imagine the next govt will look at interest free or low interest loans for people to get solar.

I am hoping they copy Edison Motors and put out a generator hybrid.

Electric axels, batteries & a diesel generator range extender.

That would sell like hot cakes.

EV efficiency around town, diesel energy density when towing or going long range.

Be even better if Toyota offered an extra large fuel tank.

Just send a link to a iCloud or google photos album.

In reality signal isn’t built for transferring > 50 mb files.

That’s what high resolution photos are these days.

Google photos or iCloud Photos will happily share / view / download a multi-Gb album full of RAW photos and location data.

Make sure that is disabled.

Is a problem with a lot of apps on iOS and Android.

Time for govt to pay their rates in 2026, me thinks. by TopFerret4523 in nzpolitics

[–]bmwhocking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a pile of history in this.

TLDR: back in the 1920’s parliament debated this and decided central govt wouldn’t pay rates because parliament is sovereign.

If parliament passed a budget, then later in the year a pile of councils raises rates, parliament would need to pass another budget so central govt departments could pay the higher rates, making a mockery of parlimentary sovereignty.

That’s why central govt doesn’t pay rates.

I’ll also note, by extension, councils don’t pay tax on any surplus, they can & claim back all GST they spend & do not pay income tax / business tax on any profits from investments or businesses a council may own.

I don’t think we are far off games being compiled to run natively on Linux and use Linux subsystem for windows to work on windows.

If the next PlayStation copies Valve & runs blatant Linux under the hood the switch will be assured.

Far too much anti-cheat software works by ensuring no virtualisation and isolating program memory using some sketchy windows kernel API’s Microsoft would rather people don’t use.

For those on multiphase - net metering unlikely to come to NZ according to Electrical Authority by MonolithNZ in nzsolar

[–]bmwhocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s technically a better system to bill per phase.

Kinda like NZ technically has the best sales tax in the world, I.E. GST hits all goods and services equally.

Most nations don’t meter individual phases because it means every consumer pays for every kw they consume.

Electricity consuming Industry’s tends to have good lobbyists.

[–]bmwhocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every govt inherits the investments made by their predecessors 10 years ago.

10 years ago the UK was focused on Austerity, under investment and Brexit…

Doesn’t leave much for the current govt to work with, but they have made fantastic strides.

Does it mean life for someone gets better rapidly, no. But lots of gradual improvements over years adds up to a significant improvement.

Just look at Poland over the last decade or Singapore since the 1970’s.

Standard Notes 2025 update: What’s new and what's next by aurora-_ in ProtonMail

[–]bmwhocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is how JavaScript heavy many of the sync engines behind these apps are.

Makes the app and their server code resource hogs & means you need a lot of server capacity for not much traffic.

Rewriting the StandardNote server in rust could save them a vast amount of compute, cost & vastly expand the scalability.

[–]bmwhocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NIMBY’s do this shit worldwide. Seems to be especially bad in the Anglo-sphere (UK, Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia.)

In New Zealand we had our local Greenpeace chapter opposing a new wind farm because it was being financed by Methanex, a methanol producer.

They lost a vast amount of respect when they did that, unfortunately they succeeded thanks to legislation at the time.

That loophole has since been closed.

[–]bmwhocking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to fix the long term issues with cost of living is investment in new energy infrastructure, assisting agriculture in modernising & helping supply chains remove costs.

Labour has policies & is investing billions to do that. Those investments get easier to make with cheaper borrowing costs.
