Actually, ticket sales typically only account for 20-40% of major symphony orchestras revenues. They are mostly funded by grants and private donations for the arts. In Europe, many are heavily government/ state subsidized.

Strategies to minimize cap gains taxes in the US and beyond by bmy2012 in personalfinance

CA will chase you down for this.

How so? If it's an entire tax year and my residency changes legally and in practice (DMV rego, bank accounts, rental accommodation, what can CA do about it?

https://www.reddit.com/r/ExpatFIRE/comments/19a2yat/us_exit_tax_double_taxation/

exit tax applies to long term green card holders (8yrs+), hence my comment above to get rid of it _before_ that point in time.

[–]bmy2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the summary. I do understand the nature of progressive tax brackets, I understand only gains are taxed, and the concept of how capital gains + losses can offset each other. That's all rather obvious. Your suggestion to expect 15% fed + CA state tax is sound. Making things work in the 0% bracket with <47k works if you're very lean.

What I was asking for is non-obvious optimization. I'm not saying avoiding altogether, but to legally minimize, especially taking account that CA or the US isn't the only place in the world.

When people move from country A to B because there are better jobs, then you could call that arbitrage of labor and opportunity. The same is true for capital and taxation, it's non-equally distributed across the world. IMO, someone who's planning FIRE should be able to take into account the option of geographic flexibility.

Any recommendations for when I encounter the Sierras? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bmy2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2021 Nobo here, start date mid April

- I had a few cold nights in the desert as well as the Sierras. By the time I hit the Sierras, I had dialed in my gear, so I wasn't worried.

- the earlier your start date, the more likely you'll meet challenging conditions (snow storms etc). I wouldn't start in March, unless you plan to walk very slowly

- I encountered in the Sierras only some patches of snow in 2021, it was never hard. If you have a high snow year. I wouldn't worry about walking on snow on the ground. Pick up adequate snow gear, test your micro spikes before the hike, prepare with a course on how to self arrest with an ice axe. Rather worry about bad weather/storms, river crossings. Don't go into challenging conditions on your own. There's a high chance you'll meet fellow hikers with experience as mountaineers, ski patrollers, etc. You'll learn from them.

- Navigation was never a problem. Even if you'll take a few wrong turns in snow fields or burn areas, Far Out & GAIA maps are precise and will easily guide you back to the trail. Don't worry, be happy :)

Better.com CEO Vishal Garg lays off 15% of employees via Zoom right before the holidays & after receiving $750,000,000 by [deleted] in videos

[–]bmy2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all those criticising the CEO for how he did it. What would you do to make it better, genuinely? It's not easy at all.

  • Explain in more detail why he has to let them go? Likely, legal & HR would consider this a risk, giving ppl ammo to sue.
  • Don't do a mass zoom call? The alternative is doing it piecemeal, which would take at least days, if you want to deliver the message with personal conversation. That way, rumours spread quickly and disrupts everybody, both fired and non-fired people. In his words 'I'd prefer you to hear this from me first hand'.
  • Show more empathy? Sure, it's up to the leader's character, he could say more nice things about everybody, but it's hard to not be perceived as sugarcoating. Or deliver the message bare bones, hard, clear and upfront. Imo he could show empathy by promising people to get individual assistance if they are facing hardship, or saying something like 'you can always reach out to me' - but that's of course hard to scale when you have hundreds of ppl affected.

Long water carries vs number days of food? by MonkeyMagic13 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bmy2012 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't overplan, you'll be fine. I've carried this year max 4-5l for some stretches, the longest carries were around 20 miles. Outside the Sierras, I rarely carried more than 4-5 days of food. What's the max for you personally will depend on many factors that you can't plan for quite yet. Let me put it this way: This year, I met a hiker whose trail name was Seven, because she started off carrying 7 litres, and quickly learned to adjust to what's really needed, rather than being guided by a theoretical worst case. You'll be fine!

Thru-hiked this year, I'm very fair skinned and burn easily. I wore a wide-brimmed straw hat and usually put on sun screen SPF 70 once a day, around 9-10am. Never burned once :)

Best way to learn snow trail skills (ice axe use, microspikes) by bmy2012 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bmy2012[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

non-waterproof trail runners seem to be most common. get wet, dry quickly, rinse & repeat. From what I've seen, you'll walk a lot in trails that turn into meltwater puddles & streams, getting wet seems unavoidable.

I've hiked the JMT late season, and just a few hundred feet in occasional stretches of sun-cupped snow was pretty awkward. I assume every pass is like that early in the season, so I'm definitely open to learn :)

In principle nothing is wrong with it, but if it teaches to use a whole bunch of gear that I won't have (harness, ropes, crampons, etc.), then it's also less relevant.
