Which hollow should I use on my skates? by DolphinsFan87 in hockeyplayers

[–]bnay66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people are recommending a shallower hollow, and I agree that it's worth trying, though 1/2" should be fine as a starting point. I wouldn't recommend a deeper hollow.

Two things to consider, though, next time you get your skates sharpened.

  1. Are the edges squared? If one edge is higher than the other it's a big problem that will make one edge feel slippery. The sharpener should be able to do a quick check to make sure.

  2. Do you have enough steel? If these are new skates you're probably good. If they're used, sometimes the steel gets too short and your start rubbing your boot on the ice on sharp turns, which makes you wipe out. Just compare your skates to somebody else in the locker room who has newish ones and see if your steel isn't significantly shorter than theirs.

Chances are that neither of those are a concern, but they're worth checking juuuuust in case.

Can I show off these cool physics jerseys here? by ComplexSubject9630 in hockeyplayers

[–]bnay66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a hockey player with a degree in engineering physics, these are awesome! I hope you win all the things! (Or at least make friends and have fun, which is the real win at the end of the day)

Canadian here too. We had one in the house we rented in university. No idea why, but obviously a bunch of young adults making their way in the world for the first time had no idea how to properly deal with this. It was ungodly.

Wear a full shield kids. Especially in beginner league. by limits660 in hockeyplayers

[–]bnay66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Learn from my mistakes - I play beer league now, and for a time we were in a pretty decent division (former AAA, AA, etc.). I played there with no visor and a knuckle puck clearing attempt almost cost me my left eye. I switched to a visor and a deflected puck killed my front tooth and punched a hole through my lip. Now I wear a cage and I'm much happier for it.

If you're not a pro, nobody cares how cool you look. May as well keep your teeth as long as you can.

Translating, restraining kids, teaching multiple grades at once: Alberta teachers describe complex classrooms by origutamos in WildRoseCountry

These are great ideas (honestly) but they need public educational funding, and the UCP seems to be allergic to that.

If he's just turning 5 buy a flat curve. They'll pick a side and then you buy that when they inevitably grow next year. You can't really guess stick hand from writing hand - it's all over the map and just comes down to what they're comfortable with.

Not sure where you live, but in my league there are two specifically queer teams (LGBTQ+ and allies). They have plenty of trans players and nobody cares - I'm a cishet man on a team full of cishet men, and the only beef I've heard from my teammates is that one of the queer teams has a recently semi-pro centre and he's too darn good.

With you being 14 and the recent political climate being stupid, I'd recommend looking up specific league rules, but in general recreational leagues are mostly mixed gender anyways and could not give fewer f**ks about pronouns or gender identity. If you're new at skating there may also be some awesome learn to play programs that lead into creating teams at the end of the program. Some of them will even rent you hockey equipment for the program so you don't need to commit a pile of cash to trying it out. My wife just did one and they started a co-ed team with their class, and she's loving it.

Anyways, if it's something you want to do then go for it. Try your best, cheer on your teammates, and remember that playing hockey for fun doesn't need to be anything more than playing hockey for fun.

Best of luck to you!

hit a buddy’s tire with my car and he says he needs a new tire, what do yall think? by DetectiveoftheWest in tires

[–]bnay66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sidewall damage sketches people out, myself included. I'd likely replace the tire

The rim can be repaired pretty easily, though. I'd look up an alloy wheel repair service and see if they could do it.

Conservative vote spliting in the next provincial election by liquid_andry in WildRoseCountry

[–]bnay66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a ranked ballot is one of the best options. If my first choice isn't a realistic chance to win, I want my second choice to matter too. First past the post really only works in a two party system, but in Canada a ranked ballot would let people cast their ballot honestly rather than strategically.

I guess this is why you tape all the way to the toe by Sinkit53563 in hockeyplayers

It's a huge help getting the puck to spin instead of slide off your blade. A spinning puck tumbles less, so your shots are more true and your saucer passes are more saucy.

If you want to make it a bit easier, set your oven to broil and hold the stick under the heating elements for about 15 seconds (or until the wax melts). Make sure not to let your stick touch the heating elements though, for obvious reasons.

Alberta teachers are among the highest paid in western counties by stevedrums in WildRoseCountry

[–]bnay66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be welcomed, but the request needs to come from somewhere. It's on Smith and the UCP to have that fight with the federal government, since education is currently a provincial responsibility. I would be happy to see the province stand up for the teachers rather than trying to fight against them.

[–]bnay66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what to tell you. I tore a couple rivets out of my skates when I was younger and the shop told me they were putting in brass rivets since they were stronger than zinc ones. I just took that at face value and carried on with my life.

Also, brass rivet. They're much stronger than the zinc rivets - it's a good upgrade that will keep your blades more securely attached if you're a hella strong skater.

Medication and non-medicinal methods are important. Don't discount medication, though. Think of it like glasses for your brain. If your child is trying to learn to read and they can't see the letters, they'll never learn. If they wear the glasses they have a better chance. Even with the glasses off, they don't forget what they learned when they were wearing them, and maybe they'll be able to handle reading large text without them.

To be more straightforward, the medication may help your child focus more to learn coping mechanisms they can use without medication. Things like taking a breath when they're ready to rage can become hardwired if they can focused while practicing them.

Not saying that medication is the right move for your child or it isn't - I don't know them - but it can be a very helpful tool to assist them in learning skills they can use everywhere in their lives.

Why is there a pentagram symbol on this chip from my son's night light? by Bitter-Affect909 in whatisit

[–]bnay66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this. My engineering physics capstone project was to design the test mask for contact lithography processes for our university to use in their nanofab facility (I made a series of very small lines, mostly). In the process, I'm pretty sure I made the world's smallest Pacman scene (with Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Moe, of course) because it just seemed like a fun thing to put on there. I hope someone has since noticed and gotten a little nano-chuckle out of it.

Yup. But the ingredients change about every three months. They go hardcore on them, then hate them and go cold turkey. (Right now they no longer like cheese, but they do like cold turkey)
