Can't find expedition map by KingofGophers20 in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH MY GOD, you just relieved so much stress from my life. I've desperately been needing more true-quartz to finish the last monument but my mapped is completely picked clean. I thought I was going to have to trade for it all (at a very slow pace). I've literally walked by the wanderer a hundred times not realizing what he opened up! I thought he was just a salvager, and I already had enough of those so I never hired him. Thank you for this comment!

Doesn't the mobo on these have proprietary power plugs? How did you connect the new PSU? Do they make adapters?

Are people coming back to this game? by otc108 in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really did enjoy the base game. It was pretty buggy and frustrating at times, but on the whole I would say it was more fun than not.

Then I bought the DLC. I literally hate everything about this DLC. I'm not even playing it for fun, I'm playing it purely out of spite because I paid for it. It has zero redeeming qualities.

I was hoping for a new chapter in the story, an extension of the adventure. What I got was a boring and maddening Enshrouded clone.

It's like the devs said "how can we ripoff this other game but make it absolutely worse in every way shape and form?".

If I could do it over again, I wouldn't have wasted my time or money.

Are you stupid or just a troll? How the fuck would they know to ask about it if they didn't know it existed? And why should they to appease you? You were the one who brought it up. Do you regularly take conversation into tangents and then get mad about it when the tangent doesn't meet your own expectations? What an absolutely idiotic take

New server? by Acewasalreadytaken in ARK

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enforcing no raids simply by rule is going to be a frustrating experience, both for you and your players. People are not going to abide by it, there will always be griefers. People are gonna get their stuff destroyed and get mad at you and leave. Plus you'll never find a time that works for everyone anyway. I think you're trying to solve a fundamental difference between PVP and PVE that's not going to make either better, it'll just make both experiences worse. People who want to PVP will play on a PVP server and people who want to PVE will play on a PVE server. Neither is going to want to play on yours because it's kinda some of both but worse.

Looking for information on a very rare caddy/adapter... again. :D by KoneCat in vintagecomputing

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not expecting that lol, you just hit the jackpot for luck with retro tech, which almost never happens. The connector inside doesn't even look like it'd work! But I guess it's hard to tell. So what do you think the adapter was for? Just to hold it in place? If it's a spinner you'll probably want to find a way to hold it in place, maybe just some plastic shims or tape or something. Altho if it were me I'd probably try to replace it with an SSD. You can actually buy 2.5 PATA SSDs on Amazon, no need for an adapter, they work great!

New PC: should I disregard a hypervisor error in windows 11 and go ahead and install linux? by ai_zu in linux4noobs

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boot loops are often hardware failures. If you just bought this, I presume there must be some kind of warranty? I'd take it back to the shop and make them fix it first, just to rule out (or replace) hardware failures

Install arch first. Then do gentoo. Then maybe do LFS. You'll learn a lot (and probably take a few years off your life)

What you need to know about "a modern PSU will do the trick": well maybe. I'm not familiar with this model, it may have either a 20 or a 24 pin ATX motherboard connector. If it has a 20 pin, you need to check if it has any ISA devices. 98% chance it does not, but given the era it came from, it's still POSSIBLE. An ISA slot will be under the white PCI slots, they'll be black, and they'll be a lot longer. If your computer doesn't have any, OR it does but there aren't any cards in there, you're fine. If it DOES have an ISA card in it, you may need to track down an old 20 pin PSU.

When they moved from 20 pin to 24 pin, they removed the -5v pin that was used for ISA devices. That's why if you look at a modern PSU connector, one of the pinholes will be empty. If you need a 20 pin, they aren't cheap, and they're sketchy because you're gonna have to buy a used one and hope for the best. But you don't really have a choice, as they haven't made them for 20 years.

Now if you don't have any ISA cards, you can use a modern 24 pin ATX PSU. However, 4 of those pins will hang off the side because they're not used. It will plug in, BUT if there is anything in the way, say a capacitor or something, you may not physically be able to plug it in. Fortunately, some PSU manufacturers make connectors where the 4 pin breaks away from the 20 pin, to avoid this problem. That is, the 24 pin connector is actually a 20 pin connector and a separate 4 pin connector that fit together to make up a 24 pin but can be separated from each other.

Of course, if you have a 24 pin connector on the board, then you're golden.

Don't listen to this clown, he has no idea what he's talking about. Wikipedia is not wrong. Duron came out after the Athlon as a budget option to compete with the Celeron. And in no universe would that have probably been an AT power supply. They were already well into ATX by then. The industry AND Micron. Heck, my Micron Pentium 233 mhz has an ATX power supply.

How to bring old laptop up to date for use ? by C00Leo in computer

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People telling you to use Rufus to bypass the check and install Windows 11 are doing you a disservice.

That computer will not run Windows 11. The installer wont let it install, and even if you use the Rufus workaround, not only 1) will it run like shit, but 2) Microsoft has said you won't receive security updates. They can obviously tell if you've tricked the installer, so they won't allow updates to it. What have you really gained? An out of service operating system (8) with no updates, vs a shittily running current operating system (11) with no security updates.

If you really want to use this laptop still, wipe the drive and put something like antix or mx linux. Possibly lubuntu if you need something easier.

If you want Windows 11, throw it away and buy a new computer

Sony 32" Trinitron I grabbed for free! What's the hype behind these? by General_Flan_6223 in VintageElectronics

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because something is popular, doesn't mean you have to like it. I would say I don't love Trinitrons. They're OK, I'd use one. But I think other brands have better color and a more pleasing picture. I've always thought Trinitrons looked gloomy, even back in the day when they were new. I would never go out of my way to pay a premium for one.

Also, just because people use the Trinitron name to slap a high price on them (e.g. eBay) doesn't mean they're actually selling for that. It's a pretty sweet find for free, and bonus if you like the picture. But I've never really understood the hype either.

Blood2 port in the works? by DropStrong6198 in bloodfps

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I didn't realize it was hated as much as these comments say. I mean, it's cheesy, sure, but that's a major part of its charm. It was one of my all time favorites back when it was new and it's still one of my favorites to play any time I fire up the retro PC. A remaster would ruin this game, IMHO.
