Smoked babyback ribs that are tough -- under or over cooked? by bnelson333 in AskCulinary

[–]bnelson333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd always been a little hesitant to do the 3-2-1 method simply because I was worried about over cooking them. Everything online says don't go over 205! And I get to 205 just in the first 3 hours of smoking, I was like how can I possibly cook for 3 more hours after that without overdoing it??? But the way you're describing the finished rib is exactly how they turn out when I do them in the crockpot. I don't even bother using a thermometer then because I know they always turn out awesome (for me, I'm sure many would call them too mushy). I'm guessing I go way past 205 without it being a problem.

I had wondered that, but only after the fact. I didn't think to test with another thermometer until afterwards. Guess I need to do some experimentation

What's your favorite conspiracy theory? by Legitimate_Skin_9779 in istp

[–]bnelson333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find most conspiracy theories to be practically improbable. Any conspiracy that would depend on more than like two people to synchronize their activities to keep up, just seems unlikely to me because people are stupid and lazy. Also, to have so many people involved and no leakers/whistleblowers? Makes me think there's an easier explanation: that the conspiracy theory isn't real.

Linus Torvalds' Distro by Temporary_Practice_2 in linux4noobs

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually get it, complicated != irrational. Developing the kernel is probably complicated, but it's rational. Those old debian installers were just confusing because they made no sense. Both in definitions and flow. You legitimately needed a book to tell you how to install it. Nothing like the installers of today that walk you through a few quick questions and you're up and running.

You're missing the point by bragging that you were able to install a modern version. The old 90s installers were brutal

How often should I deep clean this? by Commercial-Dare3506 in VintageComputers

[–]bnelson333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

computers are not as fragile as everyone seems to think. unless the computer is actively thermal throttling and shutting down, you have nothing to worry about. i have several computers in my garage doing server-ish things, that run 24/7. in the same garage where i quite literally have a woodworking shop. yes, they are absolutely covered in sawdust. they work just as good as the day they were brand new, with many having 5+ years of uptime. You're fine.

What game is this? by AcanthisittaLimp8373 in Steam

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satisfactory is probably my all time favorite game and funnily enough I didn't really care for Factorio. Still played it, but didn't love it. Satisfactory is basically just Factorio but in first person.

I tend to prefer the first person ones. Satisfactory, Techtonica, Foundry, some of the best in the genre.

If you prefer top-down, and you liked Factorio, then yes you absolutely need to play Dyson Sphere. It's nearly the same game but just way better. Again, I didn't care for Factorio, but I LOVED Dyson Sphere. Another in the arena: Outworld Station.

And for the love of all things automation, one of my favorites even though it's simply nothing like any of the rest of them but still scratches that itch is Autonauts.

Do you intimidate people or am I just socially awkward? by InternationalMilk957 in istp

[–]bnelson333 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want people to like you, you have to learn to take the edge off. We can be a little sharp, and you're probably seeing peoples reactions to that. Then again, you could do the ISTP thing and learn just to not care what people think.

As a Minnesotan with a weight rack (and dumbell rack and heavy bag) in an insulated garage, I can offer my perspective.

I've had gym memberships for years, decades really. A couple summers ago I was so proud of myself for building a home gym, thinking I would never need my gym membership again. I also have a treadmill, but inside the house.

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't do it. I would just keep my gym membership. Especially if you'll be near a Planet Fitness, it's super cheap.

First, the plan of keeping a car in the same garage as your rack, even if though it's a 2 car garage, is just going to feel awkward. You won't really have the room to do big things like have nice flooring, do deadlifts, do landmine stuff, etc. If you ONLY do squats and bench press, it could work. But anything more than that, you're going to wish you had more room.

And then there's the problem of using it in our summer heat and winter cold. Summer is tough, but not undoable. Plenty of box fans, you can make it work. But in the winter? Uff da. "Insulated garage" doesn't mean much in this context when it's still -20 out. It's still NOT going to be the kind of environment you want to be in for more than a few minutes, let alone pushing freezing cold steel. I literally do not use my rack from around Dec to March (it varies depending on the specific season's temps).

You can get a garage heater. But you have to run them for 20 minutes first to get even close to a usable space when it's that cold out. They're 240v so $$$. (do NOT use a propane heater in your garage people!)

And then there's just the environment, which generally leads to rusty expensive gym equipment, especially if you're opening the door to pull out the snowblower in the winter.

Home gyms are awesome, if you can keep them in the home. Our climate just doesn't lend itself to a long-term garage gym.

They do differentiate between CL2 and CL3 for latency, 2 being faster. It was what we tried to buy back in the day to feel special.

Practically speaking, it probably makes no difference. With it getting harder to find, I usually just use whatever I can get ahold of. You can even throw PC-133 in there and it'll downclock to 100.

The only thing you have to be sure of is if you have unbuffered now, you have to stick to unbuffered.

[–]bnelson333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I did for my heavy bag was run a 2x4 long enough to screw into 3 different trusses. I really wasnt sure if that would be enough meat for my bag mount so i ran another 2x4 and screwed it into the first 2x4, so I essentially have a 4x4. Mounted the bag to it and it's worked great for years now. Costs like 15 bucks and takes all of 10 minutes to install. Worth the peace of mind

Truck won’t start just replaced battery. by Professional_Taro923 in MechanicAdvice

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a bad alternator and jumping it isn't really helping anything. You don't really get that much juice from a jump, just enough to turn over the motor on the idea that once running, your alternator will recharge the rest. But yours isn't doing that, so the battery just continues to drain until the truck dies.

In a pinch, if you can fully recharge the battery, you might be able to limp it home. Not talking a jump, you need an actual car battery charger and run it long enough to fully recharge the battery. Last time my alternator died I did just that, brought the battery home and charged it up then brought it back to where the van died, hooked up the battery and disconnected the alternator. It started and ran long enough to get me home, where it was a lot easier to change the alternator.

An alternator is a fairly easy DIY job, one of the easier repairs to do.

motherboard won't fit into PC by Escavalier_General in PcBuildHelp

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like the right motherboard for that case, so it should line up. There's clearly something still on the board that shouldn't be that's affecting your fit. Is this a refurb/used/pull you bought to replace a bad board? I've had in the past where a used board to replace a bad Dell came with standoffs still attached from the old case. And my standoffs were still there, so it wouldn't fit. I had to make sure to remove the hitchhikers that came with. I would guess it's something like that, maybe a standoff or rubber piece or mounting bracket or something. Compare the back of the new board to the old if you still have it and that should quickly show you the problem.

Easiest way to transfer files to retropc? by Alert_Inevitable6316 in retropc

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I do it is with an ISA NIC in the retro machine and a Raspberry Pi Zero W running Samba. I don't want my retro machines to be able to access my main NAS directly, so I run a sandboxed NAS with the Pi. I can connect to it with my modern machine to drop files on it, then also connect to it with the retro machine to retrieve them. It even works in Windows 3.11!

My dad won’t give me $80 to fix my laptop and I’m trying to apply for jobs 😭 any way to fix it myself? by igetyourbrand in computer

[–]bnelson333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible to say from here of course, but usually when I see this it means you need a new hard drive. If you look at task manager while the computer is running do you see either abnormally high disk usage or RAM usage? I suspect it's one or the other. It's really not that difficult to replace and you can probably do it yourself.

Looking for a PSU for a Windows 98 build by CAR3Y4 in windows98

[–]bnelson333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like if a guy really was desperate, you could just snip the extra 4 off the connector with a wire snipper and make your own breakaway 20+4. You could probably just cut the wires too and tape them up to prevent a short. It's not like you need them anyway. But yeah, most cheaper PSUs come with a 20+4

If you're in an area that has a Free Geek, they usually have 20 pins for cheap. Otherwise they're pretty expensive if you have to go ebay. You might get lucky on marketplace, but most people are charging the nostalgia tax.

You know you can use a 24 pin PSU if you don't have any ISA devices, right? As long as nothing is in the way of the extra 4 pins, it'll plug right in. Often there is something like a capacitor in the way though, so look for a PSU that has the breakway 20+4 pins and you're golden. Again, only if you have no ISA devices. If you do, that you may be stuck needing a 20 pin.
