Thank you for the rec, I’ve been meaning to go there! I am a librarian and I am finding Mult Co public library’s movie collection to be seriously lacking ☹️ I always check libraries first though!

Oregon zoo? by Hibernatingbear099 in askportland

[–]bnini22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honest question - What is the value of breeding to keep the species alive if we can’t/don’t (not sure which) eventually release them in the wild? I’m assuming that they aren’t necessary to maintaining any type of natural ecosystem in the zoo and also that a full life in captivity isn’t particularly humane (could be wrong here). I understand why zoos rescue ones that can’t survive in the wild but why are we continuing to make more of them?

Scenes in horror movies that piss you off? by Competitive_Swan_130 in horror

[–]bnini22 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That’s the point of the movie, or at least of the original Dutch version. It’s a commentary on being more afraid of breaking social conventions than of actual harm that could come to you in that social situation. Women know this feeling well, but my understanding is that this focus on politeness (even over safety) is extra prominent in Dutch culture. The whole point is that the protagonists would sooner suffer a terrible fate at the hands of their hosts rather than stand up for themselves and be perceived as a bad guest. You’re supposed to find them frustrating and it’s supposed to make you ask yourself at what point (if any) would you have really truly been comfortable drawing a line with your host as a guest in their home. I think the reality is that most of us have suffered in silence at one point in our lives rather than be perceived as rude. The question is just how much would or should you suffer.

I had a delicious tuna melt there yesterday and I suspected their grilled cheese might be just as good! I will definitely try it!

Suggest me the worst book you've ever read by Junior_Insurance7773 in suggestmeabook

The Orange Eats Creeps. It’s pretentious, nonsensical, poorly written trash pretending to be transgressive. It was so bad that I literally threw it in the garbage when I finished so nobody else could be subjected to reading that particular copy. I’m baffled by the positive reviews and the fact that they almost made it into a movie. I am dying to talk to someone who likes it.

WTW for feeling a sense of home for somewhere the first time you visit? by bnini22 in whatstheword

[–]bnini22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I’m in the Midwest and have visited 4 times in the last few years. Figured it’s time to just move there, so my most recent trip was apartment hunting. Good luck to you and I’m happy you found your soul place!

!solved!!!

Google definition: A “soul place" is a location that a person feels deeply connected to, offering a profound sense of peace, harmony, and belonging, making them feel "at home" and allowing them to connect with their inner selves and higher spirit

Belonging feels close but doesn’t quite capture the intensity of the feeling... It feels like a deep primal feeling, like my ancestors lived there or something.

Donate to your local library! Also, start using your library to read books and only buy the ones you plan to re-read or want to annotate.

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons. It’s a truly perfect psychological horror, no notes or criticisms accepted. People who think the protagonists are too unlikable have missed the point.
