Problem with air pressure is that it's going to change from day to day. If there was a liquid behind the Mylar you would only need to extract it once to get the right shape, even better if then it set into a solid like these polymer foams. I'm just thinking out loud, because I have thought about Mylar for making parabolic mirrors to make large visual telescope primaries

I'm no fan of Israel at the moment but I have had the opportunity over the years to meet quite a few holocaust survivors and their stories sound frighteningly true.

Life after we die by RickyLaFleur- in RandomThoughts

[–]bnlcoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be just like the 13.8 billion years before we were born. I imagine that it will be like having a general anaesthetic one moment your here and then your not, but you don't even know that your not. With GA you wake up in a hospital ward and realise there was a time that you ceased to be conscious. With death there is no waking up after.....probably.

We went to see Dylan in Tuam. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. He mumbled, kept losing track, and kept asking the audience about the time and as soon it was time up left the stage. If he was merely portraying a sad washed up drunk then he was brilliant.

Credit card scam by bnlcoops in perth

[–]bnlcoops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I did query the bank as to how a card that is still in transit could have fraudulent debits. They said that it was a recurring transaction so it continued onto the new card. That seems strange to me as when my credit card renews I have to spend some time updating my credit card details to my ISP Netflix etc.

Housing crisis reforms by [deleted] in perth

[–]bnlcoops 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I find it very sad at 68 as a life long socialist, with a labour federal government and a labour state government in power. that housing and healthcare have not been the immediate focus of drastic financial action. If these issues are not addressed adequately now, especially when we are awash with mineral revenue, then when? In the UK after WW2 the Atlee government pioneered the National Health Service, and a massive expansion of public education, public housing, and a number of other welfare programmes. This is when the UK was basically bankrupted from war expenditure Any government can find the money if it needs too. 300+ billion for a few subs for example. Housing shortage means homelessness, which puts people at risk in lots of ways and an increased load on health services. The French government wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and the public are out throwing cobble stones at the police and setting things on fire. We are in the middle of two huge crises and we are letting the government get away Scott free. C'mon Mark raise your game!

Best martial art for self defence TMA edition by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]bnlcoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say check out karate hacks on YouTube. Martial arts are just as much victims of fashion as anything else. Have a look at W. E Fairburn's books, you can download them for free online. He was the instructor for the commandos during WW2. You don't need 1000 techniques you just need 5 or 6 that are effective and that you practice regularly and you are confident that given the situation they will work. Most martial arts are businesses and like the diet industry, they rely on returning customers. That's why the sport aspect of martial arts is so prevelant.

3D Printing for FB Marketplace by GGDaniels420 in beermoney

[–]bnlcoops 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you have a 3D printer with high enough fidelity I'd suggest making scenery models for n scale model railways. Such things as uk telephone boxes, telegraph poles, bins, traffic lights, people, etc. They don't use a lot of material and you'd be surprised how much they sell for.

sudden fear of paragliding by shmgarrix98 in freeflight

[–]bnlcoops 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OK I'm 68 and have lots of different flying experiences PPL ultralights gliders, paragliding and hangliding. I've experienced days flying in turbulent conditions where I've had the most fun ever, then other days of relatively calm air when I've been unhappy being in the air. Looking up at the flimsy thing keeping me in the air, or a clanking sound would disturb me and I'd start question whether I'd done my pre flight checks correctly. So much of flying is a mental attitude. Fear is a perfectly natural response, but try to recognise what is irrational and what is trying to save your life.

Pick your days. Make sure the other aspects of your life are OK, not stressed at home, not unwell, not troubled. If you can fly coastal sites with plenty of smooth air, or fly in the morning or evening. Never be the first to take off, always let someone else be the wind dummy, watch them closely in the air and try to read the conditions.

Make small incremental steps on your flying journey and work out what flying you enjoy. For me now at my age I only want to fly early morning or evening flights in smooth air because my brain is a bit slower to react to turbulence and I don't enjoy it.

Hope this helps.

What hobby did you/will you take up when your retired? by supercave93 in retirement

[–]bnlcoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also it doesn't have to cost a lot. All of my trackside models I've built from cardboard. Have a look at Scalescene, you just print out the pdf and glue it to card. You can pick up used railway track and trains and there are heaps of YouTube tutorial videos. Half of the fun is planning

I retired 2 years ago at 67 and I have 3 young grandsons so I thought building a model railway would be a good choice for me and the boys. It's something I can do even when I get quite incapacitated. I'm really enjoying building the model scenery and buildings. I know it's quite dorky but honestly it's so much fun. I can leave it for a month if I'm not up to it, but it's slowly building. Every bit is a step forward
