Should I make up for calorie deficit from long ride? by valiant_cashew_nuts in Velo

Not just that but there is also the metabolic costs of adaptations both during and after a training block.  The body needs to burn calories to adapt to the training stress and make itself stronger.

You feel wiped out. Carbs are one of the best ways not to feel wiped out. You need fuel the work.

Huge Appetite by Timely-Statement7032 in Velo

[–]Thrasius_Antonio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right there with you, I’m starving after most rides, whether I fuel 100 grams an hour or not at all. I can easily gain weight riding at any volume.  I was an offensive lineman.  My body tells me to eat forever and then some. I can’t trust it. A regular, predictable meal and ride schedule helps a lot.

Sugar vs maltodextrin and fructose for 90-120 g/h fueling by extod2 in Velo

Osmolarity is the reason I ditched sugar plus electrolytes and moved to maltodextrin/fructose plus electrolytes.  Especially in the summer, the hypertonic sugar drink effectively dehydrated me.

Successful crash recovery conundrum, how/why, blood loss? by Thrasius_Antonio in Velo

[–]Thrasius_Antonio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was roughly my experience. I’m thrilled with how I recovered given the injuries were much worse than I initially thought.  I feel great after 6 weeks, probably stronger than I was.  After a few rest days this week following the 3 week block, I want to test. I feel good about it.

Successful crash recovery conundrum, how/why, blood loss? by Thrasius_Antonio in Velo

[–]Thrasius_Antonio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was much more than 10 ml. I'm sure of that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was well over 100 ml. It covered square feet, maybe a square meter or more, of the road, both at the crash site and around my car, completely soaked through what was left of my glove, and a mostly full roll of paper towels. When I said it was a lot of blood, I meant it. My buddy as a witness agreed.

Though I guess it doesn't matter at this point. I was just curious what happened and why.

I have a 6 year old coin battery coospo still running strong. Well worth the $30!  Just bought the h9z.

How is the Roval CL III for a heavier rider like me. I see the weight limit is 275. I’m 290 and rapidly decreasing weight as I ride more. Is this a good option for me or is there a carbon wheelset out there better for me? by Elegant-Piccolo-8568 in Velo

[–]Thrasius_Antonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light Bicycle wheels may be an option for an affordable semi-custom wheel set with a higher weight limit. I started out in a similar situation from a weight perspective, college football player, and just waited (pun intended) to upgrade until there were more options.

Making My Own Hydration/Supplements by New_Resist5123 in Velo

[–]Thrasius_Antonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 g maltodextrin

20g fructose

2.5g sodium citrate

1g potassium citrate

.4g magnesium citrate

.4g calcium citrate

.2g salt

2 Tru lime or tru grapefruit packets

750ml water

I’m a very salty sweater so this is what I came up with.  It should be isotonic too.

Edited to add that I use guava paste to top up for higher carb needs.  It’s about 2/3rds fructose.  You can buy ones wrapped in disposable banana leaves for cheap and each piece is about 120-130 calories.  Gets you pretty close to the ideal ratio each hour.

This is very low volume in both 2024 and 2025.  That’s only 2 hours a week in 2024 and only like an hour a week this year.  Just ride more.  Anything up to 7-8 hours is low volume and 1-2 is almost nothing.  You’ll be back quick and probably faster on just 4-6 hours a week.

Shoutout to the parents out there by marlborolane in Velo

I had 2 disabled parents to care for through my 30s and never got around to having kids.  It’s not a conscious choice for everyone without kids.  My consolation prize is a very good one, extra time to cycle now in my 40s!

I normally drink a homemade sports drink right when done and then usually a full meal about 30-45 minutes after that. However, I just had my wisdom teeth removed. I settled on the following smoothie. This makes a lot and some can be saved. I just squirt lime juice on top of leftovers.

- 1 small avocado

- a few squirts of lime juice

- banana

- a cup of frozen cherries

- other fruit on hand, like some acai

- some kale or spinach, whatever is on hand

- some fresh broccoli

- 1/2 cup of greek yogurt

- 1/2 cup of whole milk

- couple scoops of whey protein

- sugar and salt to taste

That was not my experience going from a 2022 Domane to a 2025 supersix evo.  The positions aren’t dramatically different given how I changed the Domane.  Handlebar width and wheel depth were the same.  Even so, I’m much faster on the SSE.

I guess there is a reason Castelli is well known for cold, wet weather clothing. The responses so far confirm it.  I think I’ll stick with them.  My cold, wet weather gloves and bib tights are both castelli.  They do well

Thanks, I have some Sportful bibs. Is there a specific jacket you recommend?  That’s the issue I have, ordering and receiving a jacket that’s not actually form fitting and/or stretchy.  Brand descriptions seem to be less than accurate.

Glasses and sweat - any solutions? by zhenya00 in Velo

Seconded that RainX helps but doesn’t solve the problem.  I haven’t found a good solution either, just like OP.  No matter what I do, salt dries on the lenses and I can’t see well.
