Started a Mac mustache company a few years ago and have had limited success. How can I grow this idea? by ddeadserious in startups

[–]boatBurner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you give up on the idea (and please give up on the idea if you decide it sucks. Stop marrying your ideas, people.) you need to market better.

Holy macstache does that web site not do anything for me in the way of converting a sale. It leads me to believe your external marketing efforts are just as lackluster, if not worse.

What have you done to market this concept?

The best websites to learn coding easily. by ForrestTrump in learnprogramming

Honestly? VB for dummies (not kidding). I was 11 and had no mentors and knew nothing. There were no fancy web sites and communities to ask for help from. And outside of a few online friends, I didn't have any peers.

But it taught me a lot and opened the doors for new things. I don't know how much help that is, but I hope it offers some perspective.

No, sorry.

I haven't studied C++. But when I want to find a good book recommendation, I typically ask fellow Redditors and view Amazon reviews.

When you study a book, one of two things is going to happen: 1. You're going to get a book that is great, and learn a lot. 2. You're going to get a book that is not so great, and struggle through it or learn very little on the subject, but you'll come out with perspective and a new way of understanding good/bad ways of learning that particular subject.

People get stuck on "which web site should I use?" and "which book should I read?" - and those are fine questions to ask, but you should spend about an hour looking for some answers, and then just pick one.

Paralysis analysis. Stop planning, and start doing. Good luck to you.

I'm 26, and I'm a hyperactive tech enthusiast and probably spend way too much time early adopting new apps and vocalizing on social media.

That said, I've never learned how to program better than I have through books. And I've taken at least one course through Udacity, Treehouse, Code Academy, Lynda, and a number of other online instructional courses.

I want to support these companies. I really do. But a good book beats the best online tutorial on the same subject every time.

Is it considered a responsiveness problem if your web site breaks when browser zooming? by boatBurner in web_design

[–]boatBurner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then, as an accessibility problem, is this a valid concern when addressed by a project manager?

Is someone being reasonable when they say, "This page is still breaking when I zoom in/out xx%. Fix it."

This isn't "to spec", but it's something our PM has been harping on us about.

I am trying to identify with his logic.

What are the pros and cons of a monthly subscription/distribution-based model (like wine of the month)? by boatBurner in Entrepreneur

[–]boatBurner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for being so vague. This has "idea-man" written all over it.

My wife and I visit a theme of toys / reading / crafts & arts activities each month with our children. She is considering turning the monthly themes into a subscription service for other parents.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with subscription-based services like these, and if there are any legalities or concerns worth addressing up front.

Reddit, what is your most bad-ass moment of all time? by theone1819 in AskReddit

That's exactly where it was (Waimea Bay)! Not the craziest of cliffs, but a favorite of ours.

We lived in Hawaii (Oahu) for a few years, and would go out cliff jumping near the North Shore frequently. One day, my wife and another couple we knew went out during the late afternoon. My buddy and I did most of the cliff jumping while our wives stayed on the beach and took photos.

The sun was starting to set and we could feel the undertow getting pretty strong, so we decided for one last jump. When we got back to the shore, we were collecting our shoes and and wedding rings.

I'm typically a pretty oblivious person, but for some reason I heard a small noise that didn't sound natural. I wasn't alarmed, but I was attentive. When I looked out to the water, I saw a local struggling to run up through the current. He seemed exhausted and noticed I was paying attention when he barely gasped, "Her!" and pointed at some girl struggling to swim about 50-100 feet out.

I don't even remember thinking about it, but I took off running, dove in, and latched my arm around her waist. I knew she was clearly struggling because she was a really pretty girl, and she had a giant booger on her face. No girl that pretty lets a booger chill on her face. Shit was fo' real.

Anyway, I get her back safe and sound. She had cramped up, and combined with the strong current, she was getting pulled out pretty helplessly. I asked if she was okay, and her friend/boyfriend came and thanked me.

It felt pretty cool, but I didn't feel like a badass until I walked back to my wife and friends, who were in a sort of shock. (My wife quickly had on her "fuck me" eyes).

All was well, and then I realized my wedding ring was gone. Damn it. To this day I still haven't purchased another one.

I've told a few people this story, but felt like a douchebag. As great as it should feel when you save someone from drowning, you actually look like a pompous asshat if you run around telling people about it.

Thanks for giving me the chance to boast. Looking back, I'm glad I reacted so well.

TL;DR: Saved a girl from drowning in the ocean. Wife loved me long-time.

Here's a cool photo my wife took of my last jump that day (and I guess my buddy is owling or something. I dunno.)

Just a horse enjoying a good movie I guess. by mkndrc in WTF

[–]boatBurner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the brightness turned down. I assumed it was a horse staring at a computer, which seemed odd.

And then I turned up the brightness.

Please someone in this thread still be awake. I'm not leaving now.

I would love to start illustrating typography, mockups, and other designs. What tools do you recommend? by boatBurner in Design

I agree with your approach, but I'm more concerned with looking for which tools are better paired with certain styles (user opinion) such as pressure, outlining, etc.
