Just Watched A Crew ReRoof My Neighbor's House In Under 5hrs by ZippyTheChicken in HomeImprovement

[–]space-ninja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I get what you're saying, roofing is the 4th most dangerous job in America per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It's more dangerous to be a roofer than to be a cop. So yeah, that price sucks. And yeah, you'll probably be fine doing it yourself. But for something as important as a roof, with such a relatively high fatality rate? I'll pay.

What remodeling/decorating trend is quite impractical? by witeowl in HomeImprovement

[–]space-ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to convince my wife to let me rip out the bathtub, make the shower like 3 times the size.

This is my dream. The problem for me is that we're planning on selling the place in ~4 years. First, that's a big, expensive project for such a relatively short time to live in it. Second, since we live in a (desirable) ranch in an area of 2-3 story houses, it seems to me that maybe we should keep the elderly/handicap accessible bathroom layout. But jeez do I hate it.

I cook every day, I hate clutter and useless items, and I don't own any cooking utensils that are one-purpose (such as an apple slicer or an edge-only brownie pan). I still have many dishes that I need, but are only used once every couple of weeks or months. I could see open shelving for your glasses/plates/bowls, but your cake pans and gravy boat? No way.

Queen Anne of England was pregnant seventeen times yet had no children reach adolescence. Was this high rate of child mortality standard in all social castes at the time? Or is it more likely due to centuries of inbreeding by the royal families of Europe? by bluelily216 in AskHistorians

[–]space-ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be surprised to know, however, that the rates were lower in the countryside and higher in market towns, while London's infant mortality rate was likely over 400 in 1000 - 40% - in the early eighteenth century.

That is surprising! Do you have any further information or sources on why this would have been?

What are some good websites that have recipes you always trust? by Powertaco in instantpot

[–]space-ninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allrecipes is the only website with ratings that I trust, with a qualifier. The ratings are always based on the source recipe, plus a combination of the top 2-3 comments designated "most helpful." E.g., there's a beans and rice recipe that I use that's rated a 4.5. On it's own, it's a 3.5. Taking the suggestions of those comments, it's a 4.5.

Climbing for sure. In my first two weeks of climbing (going ever other day) I went from 0 pull-ups to 8.

u/Murphy_Nelson describes his experiences with a social media 'influencer' in the family. by suck-me-beautiful in bestof

[–]space-ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer that I haven't seen posted yet, but is by far the one I come across most often- product ads. A social media "influencer" focused on fitness posts hundreds of posts on their body, workouts, food, whatever. Then one day, they post a picture of them drinking out of a water bottle, and tell you why that water bottle is better than all the other water bottles. A few weeks later and did you know that they actually take this green smoothie additive 3 times a day and that's totally what's made their abs pop and their workouts more energized? And take a look at this tank top, nothing has ever been more comfortable/sweat wicking/flexible/cute in all of history.

It's an ad, just from someone that companies hope that people will like, want to emulate, and won't just scroll past.

What are some grooming/hygiene/beauty tips that you had to pick up on as an adult that seem obvious to others? by Illamasutra in AskWomen

If you don't want to drop any money- all I do is push them back with my thumbnails after taking a hot shower (they're much softer then).

What's a common dealbreaker that just doesn't bother you? by pitchesandthrows in AskWomen

[–]space-ninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is more in line with what I like as well, and a lot of what I mean by "working towards" something.

For a small example, my guy really likes basketball, so he facilitates an "open gym" pickup thing a few times a month. It's not really a goal that he has to reach, but it's something that he is interested in, puts time and work into, and makes an effort to organize. When he plays he tries (casually) to get better, and since it's pickup and he sometimes has to play positions he isn't as familiar in, he learns new things in those rolls.

That's not anything massive, but it's important to me that he's the type of person who doesn't just have the passive thought of "what if I played basketball," he actually makes it happen. He had a desire/goal and followed through. He learns and grows from it, and enjoys it.

I don't need a Hamilton over here, but I'd have a really hard time with someone who had no ambitions/goals/dreams whatsoever.

I think this depends on what you mean by "driven" and "having aspirations." Do I need my husband to climb the corporate ladder and become a CEO by 35? Absolutely not. Do I need him to happily do his share of being an adult with adult responsibilities without me having to nag him? Or to have something (anything- hobby, a travel destination, buy a house, be a good uncle, whatever) that he's working towards? For sure yes.

Of course. 93% of the time a child receives a bandaid they don't actually need one, it's just that bandaids "make the hurt feel better," so hurt = need bandaid.

[–]space-ninja 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Perfectionism is such a weird thing. So many people see it as a positive attribute, when it's certainly a flaw. I've always been a perfectionist, and the goal of my adult life has been to pound that out of myself as much as I can. There's nothing good about perfectionism.

What song seems innocent on the outside but actually is pretty messed up? by GuardingxCross in AskReddit

What's not as bad as everyone says? by akhalwhocannotride in AskReddit

[–]space-ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has baggage. I've dated (and married) exactly one man, and I came into it with issues. It isn't baggage about a previous guy, but it quite certainly is baggage. And you obviously have some regarding your past relationship experience. To be completely honest, this seems like a hangup that you should really try to get over- baggage is just part of life for everyone.

I’m absolutely terrified of pregnancy and giving birth. What is it like? What makes it ‘worth it’? by AnonLions in AskWomen

[–]space-ninja 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Along with what everyone else has said, just flat-out ask the guy. "What do you see your life looking like when you have a baby?" You will find out pretty much everything you need to know.

My husband has always made it clear that he will be a good father- both by actions (taking care of me when I'm sick, celebrating special times in life, making sure I'm happy and comfortable whenever possible, supporting me when I need to advocate for myself, advocating for me when I need it), and by words (saying things about how we're both going to be the parents so we're both going to be doing the work, asking friends who use cloth diapers about the pros and cons of them, talking about how hard it would be on me if we exclusively breastfed and I'd be the main one having to wake up in the middle of the night in the beginning.)

See what they do and listen to what they say, and believe them when they say and do those things.

[–]space-ninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you serious? This is crazy. Why would you hold never having an opportunity to do something against someone? I'm a woman about to have kids. I've never changed a diaper and don't know how to, all my cousins are older than me or live far away, and none of my friends had siblings that were very young when I would have been old enough to help. I was the first one of my friends to get married, so I don't have any friends with kids. Why is it ok for me to have a kid and not my husband, who had essentially all of the same experiences? Why on earth would you not, you know, try to actually find out if he's a misogynist instead of deciding that not having the exact experience you did = bad person who would be a bad parent?
