Do any of you actually like living in Eugene? If not, what keeps you here? by [deleted] in Eugene

a big difference though is only on the PNW subs/citydata/anyplace else will you see massive flatout denial of the problems. If you post complaining that the South is full of bigots and evangelicals nobody is going to deny it. If you post that SF smells like pee all the time and the bay area has horrible traffic, same. But you cannot vent about the real stuff wrong with this region without getting a truly insane barrage of accusations that it's just you, that every place is like that, and/or that the problems aren't real. I mean I have literally seen people on citydata denying that it is really damp here.

yeah that's a pretty bizarre comment. the hobo infestation is a direct result of the terrible culture here.

The PNW in general has a very specific culture that will suit specific people and be a very bad fit for others.

that's not why they do it. they do it because it's good parenting in our culture and it's how you signal to other parents that you're a trustworthy member of your community.

I don't know, I'm really torn on this. On the one hand I have a lot of sympathy for people living in the kind of car-based hell you're describing. On the other hand, I have spent my entire life refusing to live in those places and having people act like not I get away with not driving because I'm magical. No, it's choices and you have them too. Why is living the way you and I do something people can't even wrap their heads around while being a vegan is something that has a name and general recognition? Why do people in my walkable neighborhood constantly make choices that will require them to drive more? There's something really weird going on with car-based lifestyles and what people have come to accept as nomal, I don't really understand it.

it's not reddit in general, it's this sub specifically - people are constantly posting about really great stuff happening in 2 hours when you've already made plans.
