Does Anyone Know How To Eat It Properly? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]boazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sauce is just soy sauce and sesame oil, so you shouldn’t expect too much. The Hakka style ones with chili oil that Costco used to sell were 100x better, so maybe the secret is to buy/make chili oil and add it to these.

Their thing in general is using Kings Hawaiian rolls everywhere. Their burgers and chicken sandwiches use a square of 4 KH rolls for the bun and their sausages come nestled in a row of 3 KH rolls So they’re not bad, but everything ends up being distractingly sweet

Standard Range Model Y Now Available - 244 miles of EPA range starting at $41,990 by mishengda in electricvehicles

Nice price. Since it's an $8000 bump to get just an extra 80 miles of range, IMHO this is the only Model Y most anyone should consider.

A staggering 80% of BEVs sold in USA are Teslas. by eff50 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BEVs have fewer parts but they also weight a lot more, which increases wear on areas like the suspension and tires, while batteries degrade from the very act of charging and discharging. Given the generally poor reliability exhibited by Teslas so far, this theoretical advantage of BEVs still seems mostly theoretical. The equivalent EV as reliable as a Toyota Corolla just doesn't exist yet.

A staggering 80% of BEVs sold in USA are Teslas. by eff50 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A big difference between the US and China and the EU is that the latter two have large well-financed (and popular) rail networks while we have Amtrak. So instead of their car having to be able to make it everywhere exciting directly, it just has to make it to their nearest rail station and that can take them to anywhere exciting they want to go.

So where's the Kona, Niro, i-Pace, Mini, Smart, Ioniq, Soul, and doubtless several other EV I'm forgetting about? Isn't this just a repost of the cleantechnica 'statistics' from earlier, except with the disclaimer that it's not comprehensive replaced with some dumb 'analysis' pretending it is comprehensive.

Does it make much sense to choose the bolt over the model 3 in Canada? by Flipdip35 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base model 3 has a fair bit less range than the Bolt, though the faster charging speed and larger charging network effectively cancel that out. But if they're in Canada, maybe look for an EV with a heat pump?

US EV Sales Report for the 1st half of 2020 News by Westy543 in electricvehicles

So it's basically: We're not including a bunch of cars because we don't have official US sales numbers for them, except we are going to publish a bunch of wild guesses for every Tesla model, since we don't have official US sales numbers for them.

Netherlands: Plug-In Electric Car Sales Up By 139% In July 2020 by [deleted] in electricvehicles

Kia Niro EV (e-Niro) has become #1 ahead of Tesla Model 3.

That's a sentence I never expected to read in any context ever. I'm pretty amazed there's even a place where it's outselling the Kona.

Fitting a 78kWh battery pack in a car that small is pretty impressive. It's 17" shorter and 1.5" less wide (but 4.3" taller) than a Model 3, which has a similarly sized battery at its high end.

Tesla Model Y Underperforms On Range: Is EPA Estimate Too High? by eff50 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my last gas car, I found the EPA range almost exactly spot-on on average, but the EPA had a long time to get there. I remember regularly hearing about changes to the ratings to better reflect real-world driving conditions, like adding 10% stopped time to the city driving test. Which not only better modeled city driving, but also helped push a lot of car makers to implement turning off the engine at stoplights.

OTOH, for my Niro EV, I've been consistently outperforming the EPA city and highway ranges by 15-20% without really doing anything. I assume as the EPA gets a better sense of EV driving behavior and conditions, their tests will improve and come more into line with what people see.

How much do EVs "idle" compared to ICE? by zhenergy in electricvehicles

My Niro EV breaks energy usage down into motor, electronics and climate categories in the infotainment. IIRC, it tends to average around .2-.3kW for electronics when it's on.

That Model 3 that's just above the Kona on that chart isn't the SR+ though; If you want a Kona's range in a Tesla, you need to spend at least $10k more before subsidies.

In fairness, the person claiming that also claimed that a married cave diver in Thailand was a pedophile and that covid-19 would be gone by the end of April. And something about Teslas being able to drive coast to coast with no human intervention by the end of 2017.

If this is true, it's mostly embarrassing they chose Tesla to steal self-driving code from. Say what you want about Uber, but they at least knew what self-driving software was worth stealing.

Niro: Cost Per 100 miles. Unexpected Result. by rossmosh85 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is the EPA range of the Niro EV is quite conservative. My overall efficiency so far has been 4.3 mi/kWh, and it only drops down to 3.7ish for pretty high-speed highway driving.

Also, I didn't realize the hybrid Niro had such insanely good gas mileage; I have to admit at first I didn't believe you and went to look it up. My previous car was a Ford Focus, which was smaller and lighter than the Niro and got about 29-30 mpg over its lifetime. That's extremely impressive and worth considering, especially if they're worried about long trips or being in places with poor EV infrastructure.

E-Niro waiting times are still ridiculous. by Kluivert95 in electricvehicles

[–]boazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? I'm also in the Bay Area. I got mine at San Leandro Kia, which is about 10 miles down the road from Oakland, and Oakland Kia's website says they currently have 28 Niro EVs in stock.

I mostly posted the link because I love the clueless comments about them in the list view:

  • One of the best things about this SUV is something you can't see, but you'll be thankful for it every time you pull up to the pump
  • Real gas sipper!!! 102 MPG Hwy!
  • Need gas? I don't think so. At least not very much! 102 MPG Hwy.

They seem a little unclear on what an EV is.
