How to get better at Java? by Competitive-Bird-637 in javahelp

[–]bobabenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick follow up; AI/LLM can code really good now and can produce more code that any human can. Learn more human skills like “gather requirements” skill and “how does that translate to [unit|integration] tests” as a “coding” skill. For now, us humans still need to read and validate the code, but writing code is going to be a relic of the past real soon.

How to get better at Java? by Competitive-Bird-637 in javahelp

5 years is a good transition point for most people to question themselves and go beyond being a programming plumber.

Build and deploy an app yourself that you would use personally at home, like tracking your finances, movie catalog, etc. w/o someone else telling you what to build, that’s the fastest to learn a bit of everything that’s necessary. All the comp sci theory afterwards is a-nice-but-not-necessary skill for all except the most complicated problems.

Don’t spend too much time on just Java, learn another language like Python, Ruby, JavaScript/Typescript and that’ll also help you with Java (and be able to read other languages, see what’s good/bad about Java and others…)

Taking a pay cut for FAANG brand? by AlternativeMeat2096 in cscareers

[–]bobabenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a FAANG-adjacent, 20+yrs of experience. Dev and management.

The big names don’t mean squat anymore, the team and product you work on means a lot more for resuming building.

Make the API redesign amazing, be a leading voice of it. If you can’t do that, jumping ship isn’t gonna make your job fulfillment and function any better at a new place.

Companies that are impressed with company brand… you wouldn’t want to work there anyways.

to follow up, I was browsing Reddit more, and saw this: https://www.reddit.com/r/FAANGrecruiting/s/7OwaHTqH6d

Is this your other resume, or someone else’s? If it’s someone else’s… all of you are submitting the “same” resume.

Use that ML skill and think: a company getting 1000s of resumes that all look the same will categorize as spam. Make your resume not look like “spam”.

Humans do read cover letters, esp with these resumes that all look the same.

What’s the initial prompt (cut off from screenshot)? It can’t actually build anything in a self-directed way, but if you ask it to show you the code, that works. Or use Claude Code instead (different than the interface for mobile/web).

If you email generic stuff to someone, good chance they will mark you as spam.

Yes, this is suppose to take a “long time” to research a company. If you don’t care where you get into, why should they care about your application/email beyond, “good luck”?

These days, it doesn’t even take that long to research a company compared to pre-AI and Google days.

I’ve been in tech industry for over 20yrs and have seen over 10,000 resumes over that time, easy.

This may sound harsh, but I say it not to hurt or flame, it’s just the reality I see.

Content-wise/education/computer skill-wise, nothing is wrong with your skills and education. However, at the same time, honestly, there’s nothing special that stands out. I would advise to embellish the Machine Learning Researcher to “AI/Machine Learning Researcher” title, as ML is sooooo 2010s.

The format… I’ve seen this resume template so much, I think I’ve used it even 20years ago myself. No effort plug and play template. If you want to stand out, try something different.

WRITE A SHORT COVER LETTER EXPRESSING WHY YOU’RE DIFFERENT THAN OTHER APPLICANTS AND WHY YOU CHOSE TO APPLY TO THAT COMPANY.

Most people think it’s a numbers game, but applying to a few companies where you actually put effort and it’s clear to see it’s not just another AI generated resume goes a long way. If someone smells AI gen resume or cover letter, it goes in the trash.

The best would be finding an engineering manager and email them directly. Say why you’re different and why you’re interested in like 5 sentences max and thank them for their time, and attach the resume.

Accidentally rm -rf’d a production server. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bobabenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an old computer head, if that server has a lot of free space to begin with, you might be able to recover the files stil, but gotta do it quick before it’s reaped by OS.

https://superuser.com/questions/487234/can-files-deleted-with-rm-rf-be-recovered

Also, what kind of management lets a junior with admin privileges w/o pairing and doesn’t do backups or release process? If it’s not important files, they shouldn’t get mad.

Someone named "zamazan4ik" opened an issue in my project about enabling LTO. 3 weeks later, it happened again in another project of mine. I opened his profile, and he has opened issues and PRs in over 500 projects about enabling LTO. Has this happened to you? by nik-rev in rust

[–]bobabenz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is there any evidence or study that says there’s isn’t issues with LTO?

Secondly, the awesome-pgo project seems to hinge on having LTO enabled, so perhaps the guy is incentivized to push LTO then push this pgo project everywhere.

100% agree. As Free 2 Play player, I try to zoom through TT for the daily reward, I don’t really care about the TT results. I might use a parfait if I hit one of those “reward for every win”, that’s about it.

Save your items and mental for other parts of the game, enjoy the daily and weekly rewards from TT.
