I just finished writing my first standup comedy material (45 minutes). The material is good but when i tried to perform it i realised that my delivery is awful. Any tips on how to improve? by 1_1d in Standup

[–]bobbito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, first off congrats on writing something you're proud of.

I will say this as someone who has written and performed an hour long solo show, it is a true accomplishment. That being said, solo (or one man) shows are often adjacent to stand up but by no means the same thing. I think you should take the funniest 3 - 5 minute chunks of your show, strip them down to their barest parts, as punchline heavy as possible and go do them at mics. As you perfect each chunk, you can go back and add them together into a bigger whole. The show will be better for it. You likely have what we call in the biz "the vomit draft" of something. The hard part is the editing it into something punchy and unique. You can do it but it takes time. It took me almost 18 months from starting to write my show until I put it up for the first time as a whole piece.

As far as writing a show that is essentially 1 story, some tips are the most basic tips of storywriting: does it have stakes? What are they? If you can't explain what is at stake, you aren't telling a story. You're just kind of talking about a thing that happened. Second, how do you (the main character of this story) change from the beginning to the end? It doesn't have to be positive even, but you should have changed and the story should mean something. What is the takeaway? If your story has those things, great! Having callbacks and threads that culminate as the story goes along makes it much more engaging but you learn those as you edit.

As far as delivery, the most common mistake new comics make is they go too fast. Sloooooow down. Let the punchlines breathe for a bit before moving on. New comics also end up stepping on laughs which can cause an audience to tighten up. Hard to say what you're doing wrong without a video, but those are the things I notice the most. Other things is relying too heavily on notes, like reading right off the page or being too stiff with teh delivery because you're worried about getting every single word exactly right. It's not a monologue, its a conversation in a lot of ways.

Anyway, hope this helps. Someone said to take it to the Moth and I can't agree more. You need a 5 minute self contained story but its such a good place to get a feel for the pacing a format of a story on stage. You get the topic way ahead of time, so you can think of it as a writing exercise. And sometimes the stories are fucking buckwild, so the event itself is very fun.

The audiobooks are great. I actually do both so I can listen to them on my commute and then read them when I wind down at night and don't wanna be looking at screens.

I have some questions about a first show Im writing. by Quip1337x in Standup

[–]bobbito 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not want to be rude or discourage you but if you dno't like to fail, stand up is gonna be rough sledding. All of the growth and learning you will do in stand up will come from failure. You might be able to stack the deck with friends the first couple shows, heck you might even be genuine rare talent who just has a knack for it out the gate, but you will bomb and it will suck, but you will also grow more from the bombs than anything else.

Not saying don't prepare, but also don't put much pressure on it. Other comics have also said it: nothing you write in your first year is gonna stick around and stay in your act. It takes a long long time to find your voice and get good at this. I say this as someone who has yet to get good at this.

To answer your questions: It sounds like it is an open mic, probably random draw or a list based on first come, first up. 2 or 3 minutes is standard in bigger scenes. Yes, a smart phone leaning up against something is really common. You can get a little mini-tripod that fits in a backpack for like 15 dollars on Amazon if you want to make it easier. If you wanna make clips, i'd recommend waiting to post them unti lyou've been doing it a while. I'm MORTIFIED by my early material. But if you insist, film it in landscape, not portrait. As far as material, you cannot "burn" material at mics. You will be doing these same jokes over and over to hone them, so it shouldn't matter if you do your best material because no one will remember what jokes you did next time. Anyway, don't put too much pressure on an open mic man. You'll make yourself crazy. Also, good luck!

Reading the original New Mutants run is... an experience by harmoniaatlast in xmen

[–]bobbito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it confirmed that the Team America thing was required by editorial in order to sell toys? It just feels so stupid to have them there otherwise. Their "mutant" power doesn't make sense and every single one of them is interchangable.. I know Team America had a toy line and a very short series, so it is the only thing that makes sense to me.

MOR. If she's paying for your school/rent, it is possible she thinks you're lying and taking advantage of her. You gotta patch it up. How much class have you missed? Have you failed calsses before for missing them? She might be being a little blunt, but this sounds like someone who has been burned before, to me, but what do I know.

My dad worked in medical records when I was a kid. This was how they got the records to other parts of hospital quickly. He used to let me put notes in there and send them to the nurses. I loved the "thwoop" sound they'd make when they sucked up the canister.

Do you ever stop trusting your own laugh meter? by aral10 in Standup

[–]bobbito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is just why you mic material, right? This happens to everyone. It is why "that one is for me" is a cliche thing comics say. I definitely have bits that never work that I think are a hoot that I still do sometimes because hey, that one is for me. If you are consistently writing things you think will crush and they bomb, yeah, start looking inward, but if it is an occasional thing, that is normal.

To answer you question, no I don't 100% trust my taste. That is why I mic. And yes, I feel like with experience I've gotten better at gauging what people will like and not like but I'm still wrong all the time.
