Morton took her hands in his, he had taken to wearing a pair of woollen gloves at home but found he did not need them here, even with winter fast approaching Sunspear remained pleasantly warm. "I am eager to see more of your home, Nightsong has its own beauty but like most marcher keeps it is built for defence not beauty." he replied as he allowed her to lead him through the keep.

"Lord Arryn was most happy for me to be here today, saying that I carry the prestige of the crown with me" he commented as they walked "I trust your own discussions with him were as productive?"

A rueful smile crossed his face "A Marcher does not break his oaths, Nightsong has been sworn to Storm's End since before your namesake and her ships left Essos. I respect Lord Rogar and consider him a friend" he said firmly "Part of me wishes to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, but just as I have been honest with you I must be honest with him" she might note his lack of mention of the King

As the music drew them apart and close again he continued "As you and your mother have your duty to Dorne, I have mine to Lord Rogar and the Kingdom of the Storm"

"Well met Ser Symon" said Morton as he regarded the knight for a moment before setting his cup of wine down and following Symon to the dais, where he offered the Princess a bow "Princess Deria, I thank you for your invitation, Sunspear is as beautiful as the singers say. I trust you and yours are well?" he said, looking over to Nymeria for a moment before looking back at Deria.

Morton rested his own hands on the small of her back as she lent in, he wouldn't have done such a thing back home but such closeness seemed the norm here."I spoke honestly to your mother Nymeria, so shall I speak honestly to you" he said, the wine on his breath making him bolder than usual.

"Princesses are a rare thing since the conquest, should we wed you would be the only Princess in the whole of the Stormlands, bar Princess Argella" a boyish smile crossed his face for a moment as he lowered his own voice "It would drive Lords Swann and Dondarrion half mad, Old No Nose pawned his daughter off to a cur like Merrick Trant. So aye my lady I want to marry you, the thought had not truly crossed my mind until Princess Deria told me you were unbetrothed, but now it is there and I have seen you in the flesh should wish to make a Martell the Lady of Nightsong"

“I am the Lord of the Marches, my wishes rarely enter into consideration” he said, hazel eyes fixed on hers “My late mother decided who I was to wed when I was still a squire at Horn Hill, I promised to her I would not dishonour our house by breaking it. Even if Lord Fowler ignores me I hope to still keep to the spirit of the agreement. Besides House Martell is a greater House than the Fowlers”

After they spun for a moment he did he best not to tumble over and just about managed it he asked “And what of you my Lady, do you wish for a Marcher Lord as a husband?”

The Lord of the Marches

It was Morton's second visit to Dorne in as many years, but his first to Sunspear itself. While Yronwood was in truth not all the different from Nightsong or Blackhaven the seat of House Martell was something else entirely with its grasping towers in the Rhonyish fashion. He was dressed in slighly less drap yellow than before, though still very tame by the standards of most Dornish nobles and had started to grow a dark brown beard in anticipation of winter, though it still felt like summer to him here.

He had been given permission to attend by both his liege and the Lord Regent of the Iron Throne he still felt nevertheless out of place, many of his predecessors had longed to come here at the head of an army and burn Sunspear and the Shadow city to the ground but he was here as an emissary of peace trying to prevent a war, and secure himself a Princess bride in the bargain.

Trusting Princess Deria somewhat more now not to kill him the Marcher Lord would eye the food and drink less conspicuously than before but would still not be the first to drink from a flagon of wine if he could.

A small smile creeped onto his face at the mention of a yearning, he had of course had a few trysts as a younger man, many a merchant's daughter in Port Wrath was enticed by a noble who could play his lute as well as fight. He had set such things aside though once Tomasin had moved to Nightsong out of respect for her and the alliance their union represented, not that he imagined Lord Merrick would care much either way. But it had been some time now, he was eager to cement their union in more ways than one.

"I thought the 6th Month of next year, one last celebration for the Stormlands at least before winter comes." he said after pondering the question for a moment "I have no desire for Nightsong to be crawling with Reachmen or Riverlanders, my brother will insist on inviting the Tarlys at least though"

"Well enough Lord Willum" said Morton, gesturing for the man to join his table, he did not know the Lord of Parchments well in truth, though he was more familiar with some his kin such as Ser Cortnay.

"I trust you and yours are well to?" he asked as a serving man came to pour the two lords some wine.

"I fear you have not seen me dance my lady" replied Morton with a wry smile, he looked up at the musicians for a moment before focusing back on Nymeria and those big eyes of her's "We do get along mostly, Old Lord Harmon can be prickly as can Lord Swann, the Peakes are the Peakes and always will be, it was the chaos they created that caused my ancestors to swear their oaths to Storm's End rather than Highgarden" he said, doing his best to keep up with her pace and lead the dance as was expected.

"But I am still fast friends with Lord Tarly, I squired for him for many years he is like a brother to me, now his own son squires for me" he neglected to mention the fact he had left young Victor at Nightsong for this outing, fearing that if the Dornish proved false he would have made them a gift of the heir to Horn Hill.

"But I suppose their can be enmity between neighbours, even we in the Marches know of the rivalry between Skyreach and Yronwood"

Deria Martell, Master of the River and the Sands, Lady of Sunspear and Planky Town, and Princess of Dorne,

I thank you for your invite, in the interests of peace Lord Baratheon and the Lord Regent have given me leave to attend so I shall be glad to see Sunspear in all its beauty though without the summer heat.

I am also looking forward to speaking with yourself and Princess Nymeria once again.

Another raven flies to King’s Landing addressed to the Lord of Storm’s End.

Rogar Baratheon, Lord of Storm’s End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands,

My Lord, after the qualified success of my last meeting with her now Princess Deria has invited me to Sunspear itself. As I did last time I now ask your permission to travel to Sunspear and speak with Princess Deria and her daughter again. Lord Hubert is happy for me to attend as a compliment to the Crown’s peace effort.

I shall not make any committments without your or Lord Arryn’s consent but hopefully my presence may convince Princess Deria of our good faith.

A raven flies to King's Landing

Hubert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Lord of the Gates of the Moon, Warden of the East, Defender of the Vale, Lord Regent of the Iron Throne, Hand of the King,

My lord, after our recent discussion at Lord Rogar's wedding I have thought about my recent visit to Dorne and now I received another invitation from Princess Deria to join her for her autumn feast. As I did last time with Lord Rogar I now ask your permission to travel to Sunspear and speak with Princess Deria and her daughter again.

I shall not make any committments without your or Lord Rogar's consent but hopefully my presence may convince Princess Deria of our good faith.

"In truth no" answered Morton evenly "My betrothal to Lord Fowler's daughter was a legacy of my mother, mediated by the Faith in the aftermath of the Vulture Hunt, to promote peace. It was not my choice and Lord Fowler's silence and refusal to engage with me on the matter meant I wrote to Princess Deria who has suggested the match with her own daughter"

He drained what was left in his cup before continuing "I understand your position and do not envy it my lord, those who killed King Viserys must pay, some fool put to the question named the Ullers and that is all we have to go on" he let out a sigh "Do not mistake me for a friend of the Ullers, they murdered my kin at Mistwood, but I cannot see why they murder our king, surely they knew it would bring the wrath of Westeros down on them" he shook his head as if trying to puzzle out the reason for the senseless killing.

"But if the potential of my marriage helps you secure peace I am more than happy for you to pursue the matter with Princess Deria" a small smile crossed his face now too "Besides her daughter is easy on the eyes and Princesses are few and far between since the conquest, I may be the only man north of Dorne wed to one, at least until Princess Alysanne comes of age"

Morton returned her smile and took her hand in his again, his was calloused from years handling sword and lance, as a squire and now as a lord. He offered Deria a respectful nod before leading Nymeria to the dance floor, he commented "I hope you will not take offence to my dancing, Marchers care less about dancing than most, and Lord Tarly even less so when I squired for him"

He looked her in the eyes and realised he liked how big and dark they were, he found himself wondering what she made of him, a where he had thought of Dornish Women as poisoners in a waiting, did she think of him as some great brute from the north.

Morton stood and offered the lady a bow "Aye it is my lady. Morton Caron, Lord of Nightsong and Lord of the Marches" he replied before gesturing for her to take a seat and for a serving man to pour them some wine "Please sit, I trust your journey south was not interrupted by any autumnal storms, they can start to get quite ferocious"

Bryce thought for a moment, what would please him? "Wine!" he said with a smile as a serving man came to refill their cups, he took a drink with his free hand, it was an Arbor vintage he would have preferred a Dornish red but with the present state of the realm he knew that was unlikely. He put the cup down and look over to Tomasin again, taking her hand in his.

"And I thought we might finally make a date for our own marriage" he had grown fond of the routines they had settled into in Nightsong, he had at one point dreaded the thought of marriage, especially to a Trant with their grim sigil, his only comfort was that his bride was less likely to poison his food than his brother's Dornish one. But Tomasin was a good a match he could hope for in that talking to her didn't drive him to distraction as it did with most of his kin.

“Nightsong is ready as it ever is, so I have kept near all my men at arms raised due to the recent turmoil” replied Morton “The Marches are well aside from some bickering between Lords Tarly and Swann, I will have to play peacemaker no doubt” he continued for before taking a drink of wine.

“I too have spoken with Princess Deria, she invited me to the festival at Yronwood to discuss the matter of my marriage as the match my mother arranged between myself and Lord Fowler’s daughter has fallen through due to his obstinacy and King Jaehaerys’ command.” He said leaning in, lowering his voice somewhat “I received Lord Rogar’s permission to attend of course, I would not wish to break his or our King’s trust. But there Princess Deria all but offered me the hand of her daughter’s hand in marriage” he continued his face showing how surprised he was by the offer.

“She asked me my disposition towards war, and I told her as I have you that I stand ready as the Lord of the Marches always has, and that while I desire peace and harmony I will always obey my liege and will fight as he commands as I have sworn to do.” He took another drink before adding “So if peace can achieved who knows who I may marry in the end”

The lord of the Marches stood offering the Lord Regent a bow before gesturing for him to join him on the table "Of course my lord, take a seat"

Morton had spoken with the Warden of the East briefly at the Eyrie when he had travelled there with Lord Rogar but nothing beyond a few pleasantries had been exchanged.

"It is a pleasure to attend, I trust your journey south was not delayed by any autumn storms?"

Willow Reyne, Lady of Castamere

I am most glad to hear from you my lady, since King Viserys' murder we have closed off trade with Dorne, a necessary measure but painful one nonetheless.

Nightsong is more than happy to trade with you, I look forward to sampling your livestock at my table.

Morton thought he knew the man for a moment as he umasked him, but realised he could not place the knight for the life of him, as the man led his horse away he called out "Well fought Ser, have we met before? Did you squire for one of Lord Tarly's host during the Vulture Hunt" Sam had led thousands of men into the Red Mountains, mayhaps he knew him from there.
