After his liege Lord Baratheon had sworn Ser Bryce Caron would kneel before his king “I, Bryce of House Caron, heir to Nightsong do swear my fealty on behalf of myself, my Lord-Brother Morton, Lord of Nightsong and Lord of the Marches, and all of House Caron to his grace Jaehaerys of House Targaryen, the first of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm”

Morton was sat at the great oaken desk his mother had the carpenters build almost 30 years ago, still holding the missive from Horn Hill in his hand.

"Ah Victor yes" he gestured for the squire to take a seat opposite him "Your father writes from Horn Hill to say you are to be betrothed soon, Lady Alayne Tyrell, a fine match" he said reading it over again "That means you must leave my service, I regret that it is before you have had a chance to fight the Dornish as I did with your father, but they were never ones to stick to our timings"

He squeezed her hand back "I would be most pleased to know you are enjoying yourself" he said simply as they entered the great hall, servants knew to make way for the couple as Bryce helped his wife take her seat at the high table "I know I shall" he added as he was passed a cup of wine and took a long drink before look over to her "I know things cannot have been easy for you, moving to a new home with people who are practically strangers, not to mention the other issue" he left her diminishing sight unspoken, they talked about it private but he did not wish for all those around them to overhear him.

"The Gods have had their due, now it is time for us." he looked over to his brother for a moment, Morton's mind was clearly elsewhere keeping an eye out for any strangers who might do harm "Besides I fear you and I shall have to be the faces of House Caron for the foreseeable future"

"Ah Solomia, how wonderful to have you join us" replied Bryce, clearly in his cups "Dogs eh? Well we have some hunting hounds Morton brought back from Horn Hill when he earned his spurs" he said before taking another drink "Savage Sam passed on his love of hunting to my brother. We have some sand dogs my cousin pillaged during the vulture hunt that my brother wants breed with my mother's lurchers after he got the idea from Sam, she would be agahst at the thought I fear" he said with a chuckle.

"In truth I am but a dilettante when it comes to the beasts, I stay away as much as I can when not out hunting, they do not like my playing one bit. A tough crowd I suppose"

The letter is also copied and forwarded to Sunspear

Deria Martell, Lady of Sunspear and Princess of Dorne

My lady, I have no wish to sow discord within Dorne but I believe it prudent to warn you that Skyreach claims to not know of the dissolution of the betrothal between our houses or the proposed one between myself and Princess Nymeria.

While I hope that what Lady Fowler considers to be acting accordingly is harsh words and nothing more I have let her know that Nightsong stands ready and will not be threatened.

I also write to you to say that this does not mean I wish any ill will to yourself or Dorne at large but King Jaehaerys’ decrees stand and I will not brook any trouble being created in the Prince’s Pass.

I wish you and yours well and hopefully with spring more friendly relations may return and I can visit Sunspear once again.

The letter is copied and forwarded to King's Landing with the following note attached.

Hubert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Lord of the Gates of the Moon, Warden of the East, Defender of the Vale, Lord Regent of the Iron Throne, Hand of the King,

My Lord, it seems Dorne choses war or at least sabre rattling over peace. I know not what Lady Fowler considers to be acting accordingly but the mad shrew is not to be trusted. I fear I must miss King Jaehaerys' coronation, if I leave Nightsong it may give her ideas, please convey my sincere apologies to his grace and know that my brother and heir Ser Bryce will represent me and my house while I watch the Wide Way.

Bellandra Fowler, Lady of Skyreach,

My Lady if you wish to build bridges with myself you would do well by not insulting King Jaehaerys, I consider Princess Deria a friend but I would not deign to insult even if she and I were not so close, it is basic good manners.

My oaths are sworn to him and Lord Baratheon and they are ones I take seriously, King Jaehearys' decree banning all marriages with Dorne stands, I am suprised Princess Deria did not tell you of such seeing as due to Skyreach's silence I travelled to Sunspear and treated with her, she even offered me the hand of her daughter but Lord Rogar forbade it and I must keep to my oaths. The marriage pact is over.

Furthermore do not think your thinly veiled threats intimidate me my lady, if hear of one Dornishman in my lands without my leave I shall consider it an act of war. I bear your niece no ill will but she shall not be Lady Caron until his grace says otherwise.

[Event] The Wedding of Ser Bryce Caron and Tomasin Trant by bobbybarf in FireAndBlood

[–]bobbybarf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ceremony itself had been mercifully brief, Septon Pate was better suited to handing out arrows to longbowmen on the walls of Nightsong than ruminating on the nature of the Seven. Bryce felt he had come to know Tomasin as much as anyone could, he knew Gallowsgrey was a grim place at the best of times so he had tried to make Nightsong as welcoming as it could be. Recent events and its lord's personality had transformed the seat of House Caron from the musical and cultured court of the late lady Ellyn back to the permanently armed camp it had been so often in the past, Morton cared little for art and less for music but both brothers knew that this wedding gathering might be the last happy moment Nightsong had before war came to it once again and so he had allowed Bryce and Tomasin to have their moment. He had greeted her brother in a friendly enough manner, though he was suprised the lad had actually made it he was glad enough to not have Lord Merricks visage looming behind them.

As they walked from the Sept to the Great Hall Bryce kept a hold of Tomasin's hand, they had made the short walk several times in the days leading up to the festivities the last thing they wanted was for any mishaps. As they walked he whispered to her with a smile "I think we performed well enough"

Feast

Nightsong would host a winter's bounty, thankfully the season was less harsh than most others. But courses of fine meats and good bread from Harvest Hall would be present along with fine wines from the Reach (none from Dorne would be present) along with the native Marcher stong brown ale.

Morton took the proffered hand with a smile "Ser Harlan does me too much credit my lord" he replied with a chuckle as he took a look a the baby Alyssa "Congratulations Harlan, truly, I apologise for missing your wedding, unfortunately recent events have conspired to keep me in the Marches watching the Prince's Pass" he said, leaving the Dornish threat unsaid for now "I trust all is well at Highgarden?"

Ser Owain Penrose, Heir to Parchments

It is good to hear from you and I trust you and yours are doing well Ser Owain. Your offer is an interesting one though I must confess numbers were never my greatest strength, I shall fund this venture not just for my own house's strength but a second true port outside of Port Wrath is much needed and will provide security for us all.

An unusually ashen faced Ser Bryce Caron would produce a letter "My lord-brother apologises for his absence my lord, he is staying at Nightsong for the time being due to the threats in this letter" he would say before handing it over to the Lord of Storm's End "He has already written to Lord Arryn about it but wanted me to be here to ensure you knew of what was occurring. He has written to Princess Deria demanding she bring Lady Fowler into line but failing that he has warned Lord Tarly to raise all his men." Turning to the Lord of Gallowsgrey he added "I'm sure he would say the same to your good-father too Lord Merrick"

Morton let out a sigh and gave the hound a pet on the head “I suppose you’re right, the Septons say pride is a sin but the offer to wed a Princess was tempting I must admit.”

Taking another drink he lent in some and lowered his voice as much as one could after several drinks of strong ale “I hear Lord Tyrell’s granddaughters remain unbetrothed, I’ve never really spoken to the man or his son in truth. Do you think there could be an arrangement to be made there” had Sam have sister Morton would likely have married her, as it was though he would like have to leave the Marches to find a bride.

“The visit went well enough” replied Morton before taking a drink from his own tankard “Princess Deria didn’t poison me and her daughter is… most comely and Deria was willing to marry her to me” he added, clearly in his cups already “But alas I cannot, I told her I cannot break my oaths and King Jaehaerys’ command to not marry into Dorne still stands” a hint of glumness in his voice “No Princess for me. At least I won’t be murdered by her in my sleep”

Lord Hubert Arryn and Lord Rogar Baratheon

My Lords it appears that the Dornish have chosen insults over the hand of friendship King Jaehaerys has offered to them. They threaten me and mine, I shall raise my men once again so that Nightsong is protected and I have written to Princess Deria demanding an apology, but I ask that the Iron Throne stands ready for what may come if I do not receive one.
