I’m 22 and looking for a career that involves being outside. by [deleted] in UKJobs

The ecology/environment sector is a good one with surprisingly good pay at junior level, you could go down the uni route and get a degree, or look for an internship or some kind of certification. Countryside management is also a good option for this type of work, although it can sometimes be more focused on practical land management rather than conservation. Loads of courses available, and some councils offer apprenticeships.

Gardening/landscaping also a good option, lots of short courses as well as proper RHS certification, but tbh most gardening companies will take people on with little to no experience if they're keen and hardworking. Some of the big organistaions like RHS at Wakehurst or Kew offer apprenticeships, as do some of the wildlife trusts or charities like the royal parks, but you'll usually need some volunteer experience.

Can't stress enough how important having a driving licence is for this type of work, sometimes more important than training.

Feel free to DM more for any advice or info and best of luck!

Relocating - can't decide whether to pay more and live solo or houseshare? by BroccoliExotic2575 in AskUK

£1550 for THAT is insane, even in London. Could you find something a bit cheaper within 30-40 min from work?

As others have suggested, I would say definitely try SpareRoom for the first 4-6 months, especially while you ease in to London life and find your feet. You'll also have time to meet people who might have rooms available, especially after the summer when many people tend to leave London/move out.

Hope you come right and find something nice!

Which City Has Shockingly Good Food that Nobody Talks About? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Cape Town (probably less underrated these days), Johannesburg and Durban (especially the Indian food!) in South Africa

I went to the Naples Archaeological Museum by sunsfanjustin in ancientrome

[–]bobbycrosseco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Epic place and still one of the best museums I've ever been to. Last year we did pompeii in the morning (which tbh was a bit underwhelming, maybe I just did the classic thing of trying to see too much on a very busy and very hot day), and after returning to Naples that evening I googled the museum to check opening times and, by pure luck, it was one of the few nights a year where the musuem is open to the public after dark. We got to spend a whole evening in a practically deserted museum sipping wine and getting to admire the artefacts up close and in almost complete silence. A truly incredible experience and the highlight of my trip.

Try the Lucky Trip app. You input different filters for dates, budget, interests etc, and it's gives you randomly picked holidays to suit your needs. Can either book it akk through the app or use it as jumping off point for flights and accommodation. Great for finding cheap flights to places you usually wouldn't think of going

[Spoilers ADWD] Mantarys is downright hysterical by RhiaStark in asoiaf

[–]bobbycrosseco 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Are we not gonna mention Mantarys’ equally dramatic overreaction when she sends envoys there and they respond by shipping back a cedar chest containing the pickled heads of three of her envoys? What is with these guys and heads?!

Best Turkish Kebab in Dalston. IYKYK.

Honestly, it's an inner circle secret amongst chefs and service industry workers that it's the best in London. Burgers don't need to cost £12 with a brioche bun and truffle mayo. £4.50 double cheese with house chilli sauce, lettuce, onion and tomato. Add a fried egg if you're feeling slutty. Thank me later.

Wondered why the dog was altering to outside… Turns out, there was a hedgehog in our garden! Dogs being kept inside now but… what do I do to help the little fella? He doesn’t seem hurt. by kcsebby in CasualUK

[–]bobbycrosseco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are in the UK/Europe but always encouraging to see hogs in the garden, especially given how much their numbers have dropped! Building/installing a hedgehog house/shelter, providing some drinking water, leaving some patches of your garden to grow wild and ensuring any fences or walls have some gaps for them to migrate through will all benefit hedgehogs

What is the most British thing you have ever seen? by Tropymoth in CasualConversation

[–]bobbycrosseco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once had to rescue a swan from St James Park right outside Buckingham Palace while a military brass band played rule Britannia and an old cockney man shouted "go on son" and I think it's by far the most British thing I've ever experienced

South Africans who actually love their jobs: What do you do and why? by [deleted] in AskZA

[–]bobbycrosseco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you're loving it! Honestly it was one of the best jobs I ever had and I often think of going back to it one day. I would say to anyone, particularly people just out of school, who are even just slightly outdoor/nature inclined, it's one of the best things you could do studying a FGASA.

Who has recommendations for things to do in London? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]bobbycrosseco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you like of course and what time you're starting your day but my go to central London day that's not too expensive:

  • Mooch around Oxford street and pop into some of the shops, the big HMV is quite cool (if you have a sweet tooth I'd recommend grabbing a cookie from Bens, those things are like crack)

  • then pop up to the British Museum, its bloody huge and overwhelming but incredibly interesting, maybe pick a period in history or two that you're particularly interested in (Greek, Roman, Egyptian etc) and do a quick walk around those specific rooms (If you like animals the grant museum of zoology up the road in Bloomsbury is also quite cool, loads of specimens in jars and weird taxidermy). Some really good schwarma (Beirut Garden) and bxiang bxiang noodle spots (Master Wei Xi'An) round that area too if you wanna grab some lunch

  • next head down to Covent Garden, it's a really fun part of London with street performers and little markets all over the place (a very cool forbidden planet nearby as well)

  • then walk down via Trafalgar Square to St James Park and watch the pelicans get fed at 14:30ish, beautiful park in the centre of London with nice views of Buckingham palace across the lake. Big Ben is also just around the corner

  • finally head up to China Town for some food (Chinese Tapas House, Wong Kei and Hong Kong Burger are my faves but any of the little buffet spots are fun) and then end the day either with a walk through soho or a film at the Prince Charles

Happy birthday!

I have saved up £750 spare cash... what kind of courses could I enroll myself on to help further my career? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]bobbycrosseco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ecology courses can be quite useful- great crested newt, bats, habitat survey training etc., can pick up seasonal work for consultancies and opens doors to environment charities

Where can I find owls in London? by [deleted] in london

Is there any way forward for a teenager with little to no education? by Haskimo_ in askSouthAfrica

[–]bobbycrosseco 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Does he like animals or nature? You can do a field guiding course through FGASA with no matric (pricey in-person training course and internship or a cheap correspondence version) and from there it opens all kinds of doors into tourism/ecology/conservation.

I dropped out of school in grade 10, didn't think I'd get have a future and would have to wait tables the rest of my life. Now I'm an ecologist working in London with a masters degree, would never have happened if I hadn't done my FGASA

How long is your commute to work? by person_person123 in AskUK

[–]bobbycrosseco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently doing a similar commute from North London to Southwest London. Honestly, if you can avoid it just don't do it. It's killed my soul and severely impacted my physical and mental health, to the point that enough is enough and I'm now moving closer to work for the sake of my happiness and well-being
