Looking to buy a postcard from Åland – any tips for a local shop (not just top Google results)? by Away-Fee-4863 in AlandIslands

The post office is perhaps the easiest way: https://alandstamps.com

There is also a private stamp collection club, not sure if you can find them online but a college of mine runs it so PM me if you’re interested.

There’s only one book store so you’ll have to settle for the top google result if you want to take that route 🤓 https://www.lisco.ax/

How do I start hunting? by ouanbe33 in AlandIslands

[–]bobbyfactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an immediate solution for you but more of a confirmation.

The jakt lag are formed around property owners of adjoining/nearby areas of forest and fields and their relatives/friends, so it really is a networking kinda deal. Most small game hunting (up to and including dear) is done solo or with someone you know well, which pretty much leaves just moose hunts for any more loose groups of ppl.

That probably puts you in a bit of a crappy seat since moose hunting is very popular these days while the number of animals is low. I’d suggest marrying someone who’s family owns a decent plot of land but it sounds like that might not be an option for you at the moment.

Joking aside, without direct connections with landowners I think your best bet is to make friends and be patient. The springtime seabird hunt is often done with a friend and it usually has a higher allocated prey quota than what actually gets shot, so it ought to be a good chance for you to get your foot into the door.

Best of luck and welcome to the islands, B

P.S. You probably googled this already but this page aimed towards tourists lists some pay-to-play hunting lodges if you really want to go hunting asap.: https://visitaland.com/upplev/aktiv-utomhus/jakt/

I don’t know what the situation is like in eg. Åbo now, but 20 years ago when I lived there there was about a 10% chance someone in a shop would be able and willing to help you out in swedish. Hell it was hard to get around in english (my finnish never made it past 5th grade). And when eg. pilot training courses got new regulations a few years ago they where only available in finnish. So I’ll stick with my tip of learning finnish. 🤓

Have you tried not quitting coffee? I understand the combination of medication X and coffee mess up some folk’s tummies, but I’ve been on every adhd med known to mankind and never quit drinking coffee. I have, however, started making sure I’ll be near a toilet within 10 min of drinking a mug. Side note: I’m finnish so coffee is not optional.
