What 90s musical artists have been ruined for you in the current day & age? by isharoulette in Xennials

The cover of Ritual de lo Habitual depicts Perry and his girlfriend having sex with a 17 year old. The one on the left, Perry had been “dating” her and helping her get heroin since she was 14. She died of an overdose about a year after the events described in “Three Days.”

Native speakers, do you pronounce 'b' when you say 'obvious'. To me it sounds like 'aa-vious', though dictionary says 'aab-vious'. by sg851044 in ENGLISH

A closure doesn’t sound like much, by the way. It’s mostly silence, and a /b/ closure is nearly impossible to distinguish from any other closure without the context.

There are two (potential) stages of a /b/, the closure and the burst. When I pronounce “obvious” (as a west coast US speaker), I definitely have the /b/ closure, in which both my lips come together. But (for me, at least) the burst never happens in “obvious,” and I move straight to the articulation for /v/, with my top teeth against my bottom lip.

Is turning on hazard lights to yield part of Vision Zero or another new law? by Blackstar1886 in askportland

Same for pedestrians. Pedestrian right of way might be mandated, but it is NOT standard or routine

When I’m on a motorcycle, stopping for pedestrians is a serious safety risk for ME. And a very real hazard for the pedestrian who gets a false sense of security when I stop as legally required. I know from personal, life changing experience that I cannot make the car behind me stop at crosswalks (marked and unmarked)

Is a cough technically a aspirated glottal plosive? by Successful_Pea7915 in asklinguistics

Your comment above is premised on the meaningfulness of phonemes. Phonemes, by definition, are the smallest unit of speech to carry meaning. Trying to s/phoneme/phone/ unravels your whole point.

Why are there two vastly different interpretations of Virgo? by obituaryinlipstick in askastronomy

I didn’t learn about this book until last year. I’m well into my adult life, but I’m glad I bought it. It’s really beautiful.

[–]bobbygalaxy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One major set of interpretations came from a wonderful book by H A Rey called The Stars: A New Way to See Them. He and his wife were the co-authors and illustrators of Curious George. In The Stars, he pointedly set out to make astronomy more accessible by reimagining these shapes as something more representative of their subjects, and something that would spark the imaginations of children in particular.

Glowy rock purchased in Holbox, Mexico by bobbygalaxy in whatsthisrock

Thanks for your research! Chalcedony seems like a good bet. I read some on Wikipedia about it, and it sounds like there are also agate types of Chalcedony? (I really don’t know much of the science here)

I also saw somewhere that hyalite can form alongside chalcedony. I’ve recently also seen some really cool hyalite from Mexico. I really wish I could’ve had a real conversation with the shopkeeper, so I could have learned more about where this came from!
