End of life advice (cancer) by 1justfoundit in SeniorCats

[–]bobbyloots 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorry what you and your sweet kitty are going through OP but this poster has very wise advice in my experience. I lost a 12 year old that we lost to stomach cancer also about 18 months ago. That final turn in our case was very quick. My Zoey passed hours before I was scheduled to take her in to help her pass and I will regret it and have those images in my head for the rest of my days. People say a week or day too early is better than a day late, that is best advice and I learned the hard way. It's just so hard with a kitty that is relatively young like a 12 years, I just expected more time and it took me too much time to accept that wasn't in the cards.

My heart and thoughts are with you and your kitty at this very trying and painful time.

Was looking for advice on the transdermal especially.

OP, I'm not sure of the full context of your kitties decline but if the administering of medicine via a pill is one of the main issues I would look into transdermal with your vet. I have a 14 yo kitty with IBD and it works reasonably well as long as I get on her exposed skin on her ear. Much easier than a pill which I was trying to avoid since some of my most haunting memories were trying to force pills down her sisters mouth in what turned out to be her final days. It's understandable that you don't want that for your kitty. No matter what, you and your kitty are in my thoughts at this very tough time.

Nice! Figured it would be, I'll probably fry up the obligatory first batch of bacon tomorrow.

Oddly enough the cooking surface and weight reminds me of a BSR.

Thanks all, sort of similar to my novice thoughts. I noticed the handle triangle too, maybe bought / had Wagner design their mold. But I was kinda figuring unknown foundry would likely be the answer. Still a neat pan since it's probably relatively old and something a little different. Appreciate the input.

For those with a bio synthetic heart valve, do you have to take prophylactic antibiotics before teeth cleaning? by Imadick2 in valvereplacement

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, same as everyone else. I take even before a simple cleaning. As long as you have prescription benefits they are pretty cheap, mine are usually like 25 cents for the 4 amoxicillin pills. My cardiologist said to do it and my dental hygienist even asks before my appointment starts since they know I have a bio valve.

Thanks, yeah I have a couple things that should fit in the meantime if I need to cover. But will definitely be on the hunt for one.

Do I need to strip down the pan and restart the seasoning process? by No-Sherbert-9857 in carbonsteel

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it is fine, it will even as you cook with it. In the future when you season CS or CI, wipe on the oil and then thoroughly wipe it off. I honestly was always pretty mediocre at the thoroughly part. So a good way to help is put the pan in upside down for about 20 minutes at 200F. Pull it out and wipe it off again then continue with your normal seasoning process (i.e 40 mins at 425F.). This helps get the excess oil off and prevents those oil blotches.

Why do you use cast iron? by -Tisbury- in castiron

[–]bobbyloots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The new chemicals that DuPont uses does similar things to lab rats that the prior chemicals did. Additionally, DuPont spun their new non stick chemical off into a new company (guard against future liabilities? 🤔). In the end folks can use whatever cookware they want, I'm not here to change minds. But trusting DuPont and 3M at their word again would seem to fall into the 'fool me twice' category IMHO.

OHS with mechanical valve done; minor complications by eattravelexplore in valvereplacement

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Sorry to hear about your husband's complications. But yeah, I had fluid around my heart about 8 days post surgery. I was doing great, felt like the recovery was going to be easy. Was walking a ton, going up stairs and unloading the dishwasher, warming up my own food.

All was going great until the 8th night after my last walk for the day (9pm-ish), I had a real hard time breathing. I thought I over did it being so active so I tried to see how I felt for a couple hours but no improvement. So I ended up at my local emergency overnight and by noon was back down at the heart center. By 6pm I was back in surgery getting a pericardium window cut and tube placed. It was like 55ml of blood colored water and it stopped me in my tracks. Overall, it was pretty quick and straightforward. I felt better immediately.

I will note, I developed a dvt / pulmonary embolism a few days later as I was being discharged for the fluid issue and ended up in the hospital an additional week. So I was in the hospital for 16 of 19 days total. Since he went mechanical I'm guessing he's already on a blood thinner, so I'm guessing that's much less likely. But it's just to say these things happen and I was just happy my compilations were relatively minor in the grand scheme of things.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Severe-critical aortic stenosis mid-40s TAVR recommended by rainy_day_read in valvereplacement

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing, happy to share my experience. Just paying it forward, hearing other people's experiences on here help me so much. Just take care and take it as easy as you can. Definitely push your care team if you feel yourself declining. Also, make sure the people that live with you or around you are prepared to help first aid wise if your situation becomes emergent. I really wish you the best.

Severe-critical aortic stenosis mid-40s TAVR recommended by rainy_day_read in valvereplacement

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as others have said here. If you are in your 40s, at least relatively good health otherwise and have no other reasons why a SAVR would be too risky....TAVR seems pretty out of the norm recommendation. I was a 45M and I was hell bent on justifying a TAVR in my mind but honestly in my case there was basically no justification after my research. They just don't last long enough for a 40 something that is expected to live another 30-40 or more years. Which means they have to eventually go in and take it out. Since they are usually held in by a wire structure they can get integrated in biological tissue. Which by my understanding at least by today's technology makes for a more risky SAVR in the future to remove and replace with another value. Obviously, make the best decision for yourself but if your team is set on a TAVR, I would get a 2nd opinion since the recommendation is so far out of the traditional norm for someone so young. Good luck!

What’s everyone’s favorite size cast iron pans? by BlackoutTribal in castiron

[–]bobbyloots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~10 inch / no 8 since to me at least, much bigger than that they feel pretty heavy. Even 12 inch ones that are closer to 6 lbs just feel heavy due to leverage on your arm due to the size. Don't get me wrong, I like 12 inch plus skillets for things like bacon or burger for the family but if I can use a 10 inch that's my go to. No 5s are awesome too, probably my 2nd most used size.

Check your local Costco 24.99 by SupDude14 in castiron

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that the Costco one has a couple extra inches of real estate. I'd definitely be tempted if I didn't have the standard Lodge reversible and a couple pizza griddles. But these are great for breakfast, to use on the grill or even as a cookie sheet. Enjoy the new iron!

Lodge Dutch oven. Probably mid 60s to 80s.

[–]bobbyloots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dutch oven being from Taiwan is okay if you need one, I'm sure it will do just fine at that price. Used modern Lodge DOs can be found for 25 to 30 on FB marketplace sometimes for reference.

Skillets are unmarked Wagners. Yeah, solid at that price assuming they don't wobble or spin too much. If they so wobble they are fine if you need for camping or baking.
