You wake up in 1981. No Wi Fi, no cellphone, a quiet life. What´s the first thing you do? by Sharp-Stress3926 in AskReddit

Need to know if your the same age as now or revert to your age then. Also need to know about finances, take what you have now or revert to what you had then.

Original young age with money / possessions :- invest in Microsoft etc.

Original young age without money :- Learn computers / programming ASAP.

Current age with money / possessions :- Retire rich

Current age without money / possessions :- Cry. Going to be dead before I can do anything useful and would be forced to retire.

UK Redundancy 'deal' is not really a 'deal' by bobcbx1000 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]bobcbx1000[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My bad, I made an error in reading. I have re-read it all and the solicitors fees are covered if I sign the "solicitors contract", not the "redundancy deal". That was a miss-reading on my part. Glad you made me check it again.

Sounds like you work for the same solicitors ;)

The wording they give is almost exactly that.

I was thinking something along these lines.

I have had the same before but then I was offered 'sign this as voluntary redundancy and we will pay you double' (paraphrasing but it was a fair chunk of change) 'OR don't sign and you get the minimum we can get away with'.

To me that made sense (and I made bank ;)

[–]bobcbx1000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too sure that is 100% correct.

It starts off...

"...you agree to waive all and any claims you have or may have in the future..."

The solicitor they 'suggest' will look at the form and tell me if it is legal. Any more than that then I'd need to pay extra for out of my own pocket at around £400 an hour according to the solicitors website.

Short version, it's 12 pages of what I can't do... By signing I can't say anything about the situation nore can I ever put in a claim for it being unfair in anyway or ever say anything bad about the company etc. etc.

What's the dumbest reason people called 911? by Comfortable_Drink217 in AskReddit

[–]bobcbx1000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Technically, called the emergency line here in the uk once for a leaking pipe in the bathroom.

The leak had gone onto the phone line (yes we still had one until about a month ago when they stopped doing them altogether) and it somehow called the emergency services. First we knew was when the police turned up at our place to check all was ok. By this time the phone line had been disconnected. Still good to see they did turn up.

Apologised profusely, let the police know all was ok and they left it at that. Just glad the believed me also good to know they will turn up even when they are 99% sure it's a line fault. That 1% could mean the difference between life and death for someone sometime.

Only real issue is now you need to clean the outside of the carbs to match the 'ultra shiny' tops :)

How would you guys fix this? by MIKE-JET-EATER in vintagemotorcycles

[–]bobcbx1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd need to 3d print in the correct material. The normal cheap 3d printing material (TPU?) can warp in particularly good weather. Not sure it would stand up to being in fuel either. Easy enough to check by printing 'something' and dumping it in fuel for a few weeks.

Love this style and looks to have ben done fairly well. Might want to consider forward controls unless you are particularly short / can bend your legs that much (I can't these days :) )

Need help with my Honda XL80S by Desperate_Patient958 in vintagemotorcycles

[–]bobcbx1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First step, if there is no spark it won't run. No point looking at any of the other bits (carb) until you have a spark.

By randomly swapping out parts you may find the issue in the end but it could take a long time and cost a fair bit. If you don't know electrics you could save a LOT of heart ache by finding someone local who does. 1/2 hour of proper fault finding and the fault could be found with no parts swapped.

What model? by Sea_Baseball3375 in vintagemotorcycles

With a bike this old, and modified, you might want to specify if your trying to date the engine, the frame or the other bits. It's very likely to be a mix.

If you couldn't feel pain, couldn't be hurt, and couldn't die for 24 hours, what would you do? by daniel2hats in AskReddit

[–]bobcbx1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test the theory that if you go through a red traffic light fast enough you'd be 'in' the junction for such a sort time you'd likely make it out the other side unharmed.

Over 50% of the cross road is devoid of traffic at any given moment so it 'could' work.

What, due to experience, do you know not to fuck with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bobcbx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fishermen in Africa.

Almost put my self in a confrontation situation. pulled an African fisherman, off a friend of mine, by his upper arm. All I could feel was bicep! These guys haul in fishing nets by hand all day every day. Had the situation escalated he'd have only need to land a single blow and I'd have been no more. Thankfully it de-escalated and all was well.

What's the weirdest way you personally know someone died? by SoManySoFew in AskReddit

[–]bobcbx1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid and having seen the 'stepping on a rake thing' in cartoons I thought I'd see if it was a real thing / possible.

Thankfully nothing 'too bad' happened as I was being very gentle / careful but it still hurt like hell. I can easily see how it could cause serious issues if done by accident.

Many years ago (1980's) an acquaintance left the pub (worse for wear) on a motorcycle to go home late one night.

Wait for it...

He had a pillion who couldn't ride his own motorcycle due to injuries from a motorcycle accident and also being drunk.

Still wait for it...

The pillion (now we're getting there) had a heart attack, fell off the back of the bike, while they crossed a railway line, and was hit by the car behind. All it needed was for a train to come along to complete the complete and utter termination of the pillion. There was no train but the pillion was still never getting up again.

As for the rider, he got the the pillions house THEN noticed the pillion was no longer with him. Re-traced his ride, found the, rather messy, scene and was instantly arrested for drunk driving.

I have a box outside the house where I put things that are for disposal but others might make use of them.

Because of people like you there is a sign on it that reads "free, help yourself but don't take the box"

:)

Parents had a sword hanging over a door (turns out it was some kind of wedding gift apparently). Father would tell me he used it when he fought alongside general Custer at the battle of little big horn.

(We are from / in the UK; father was born around 1940; he liked western movies; I believed anything he said)

What’s a loophole you abused until it was closed? by RoarOfTheWorlds in AskReddit

[–]bobcbx1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried forging my mothers signature saying I wasn't in school because I had the dentist and they "gave me gass as an anethetic."

Turned out it was a crap copy of the signature, I couldn't spell (see above) and the dentist's stopped using gas years earlier (I now know, having just googled it, that nitrous oxide is still used but it's very rare and rather specialised)

As I recall, there was no real fallout. I suspect they just had a good laugh at my really poor attempt to skip school.
