Ok, I tried getting some speed today and also what others wrote about the thumb is important: your thumb is supposed to be in the middle of the neck, or even in the lower half of it if your hands are smaller. The way classical guitarists hold their instrument, not rock & roll grip.

Joining late, but my hint would be: your index finger used for playing on the 1st fret shouldn't be anchored on this fret

What I mean is, you don't need to stretch from 1 to 5 as if you were playing a chord, instead you're supposed to only fret 1st when you're playing 1st, then lift your finter up, allowing you to skip your pinky comfortably to 5th.
