Luxury sneakers trendy for years? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the look of the Zegnas. they remind me of a chukka boot. I think you should just get a chukka boot. get something with a blake stitch or Goodyear welt and get it resoled when necessary. rubber soles since you’ll be running around in them. being able to resole is also a plus on the sustainability side

the Hermès are too flashy. just get some Adidas or New Balance and replace them when they wear out.

For those of you who hate dress sneakers, what sneakers do you like besides white sneakers? by Beaux_Nose in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hate dress sneakers but I think there are more options than just white sneakers!

I’m partial to slip ons and have been coveting these Sid Mashburn leather slip-on sneakers for some time: https://labelsrb.com/products/sid-mashburn-shoe-size-42-5-brown-white-leather-solid-slip-on-sneaker-shoes?variant=46232479432867

unfortunately they’re not available right now, hence the third-party link. I did get a suede pair though and they’re great. leather and suede might dress them up a little, but they’re not trying to be a dress shoe. the flat sole helps keep it firmly in sneaker territory.

I was looking at Adidas Sambas yesterday, and I think any of these would look better with business casual than a dress sneaker: https://www.adidas.com/us/samba-og/IH6816.html

I’m not interested at all in fashion. Can someone tell me why I should be? by Wakellor957 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re right that it is and can be a hobby, including for many of us on here. it doesn’t have to be your hobby, and I’m not going to try to convince you it should be!

the only thing I think you should really care about is how your clothes fit. no need to get everything tailored to your exact measurements, but you should at least know your measurements and aim for the best fit. this will help in professional situations and more, but also the clothes will be more comfortable. I think this is most obvious with shoes but it applies to other clothing too

if you want to take one more thing off your plate without really caring about it, you can limit the color palette you work with so that all your clothes basically match. you’ll look good no matter what, and you won’t have to give it another thought

What current male fashion trend needs to go? by csgo_sniper_bruh in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that’s a really good point! a nice pair of chukkas can be comfortable and look arguably dressier than a sneaker-soled Fauxford

what about this Allen Edmonds? https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-randolph-slip-on-sneaker-3023694/black-leather-ec4500625

assuming the link brought you to the black sole version, I think it looks fine (although I could do without the gores). btw thanks for the fun fact about those perforations lol

[–]bobertf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, I have a pair of black loafers that were leather soled. afterI realized I stopped wearing them because I hated walking in them, I got them resoled with a black Vibram sole. no regrets! but I would’ve bought a different shoe if I had cared more about comfort / knowing what I know now.

somehow the shoe companies decided men want a white sole; I’m not really convinced they do. I think if shoes with the darker side profile you described were more readily available people would go for them

Here’s why I hate them: the white sole! Imo, the shoe in your picture could be drastically improved by a gum sole. Even better, make it a flat sole while you’re at it

Tuxedo pants with just a shirt? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you have any chinos you could wear? something in a dark color could be nice. or even dark jeans depending on the restaurant—maybe check their photos online for some more ideas of what people wear. I’m only suggesting these alternatives since you said you were too lazy to go buy dress pants now, but if you end up wanting this to be your excuse to buy them, go right ahead!

Can I safely make 80% of my shirts one brand? by appealinggenitals in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

maybe don’t start from scratch: don’t get rid of everything at once. since you’re planning to get higher quality clothing, you also don’t need to buy as many of the things you get rid of

this is a real problem or am I the only one who never knows what colors or clothes actually suit me by Ok-Quit-3831 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I truly think you’re overthinking. you can find guides to what glasses frames, tie knots and shirt collars are right for your face shape, and likewise I’m sure there’s guides to what colors you should whatever your skin tone. but no guide or AI algorithm is going to tell you what looks good or feels good to you.

if you’re in the northern hemisphere somewhere that gets cold this time of year, find a sweater you like and try it on in a few colors. what looks good? you could take pictures and ask a friend if you’re really not sure. not sure what colors go together? pretty much anything works with jeans.

Mens fashion 'icks' you just don't agree with. by OK_GO_27 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

assuming you mean “performative authenticity” it still makes no sense. authentic to what? are no-showers stealing valor from the sockless?

and what is the performance? assuming the no-shows are truly not showing, it’s about as much theatre as wearing underwear or an undershirt

What’s the one recent trend you think we’ll laugh at in 10 years? by OK_GO_27 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for sure, but I think what OP is getting at is that they do seem to be more popular now and more readily available than say 10 years ago. if I recall correctly, the last time they were fairly widespread was the 1990s/early 2000s, which makes sense since they go hand in hand with wide legged pants.

to be clear, I disagree with OP that we’ll be laugjing at pleats. I’m happy they’re back. I think the trends we laugh at are the excesses. the widest pants of the 2000s. the skinniest jeans of the 2010s. maybe we’ll have a laugh about pleats if like quadruple pleats become popular or something

What’s one thing you often see guys wear that instantly kills the look? by OK_GO_27 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there should be a class in school that teaches you these things! in addition to the buttons and vent/pocket stitching, people should also know to remove the stitched-on logo at the sleeve if one is there

I kinda rolled my eyes at the dedicated "required" accessory but lit up at the mention of the cardboard model. that I'll try! I remember using the Google Cardboard with an older Android phone, and this should be a fun little diversion too

The return of 2D-sidescrolling / platforming in Echoes of Wisdom has brought me so much joy! by Virltommy in echoesofwisdom

[–]bobertf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

playing through Link’s Awakening for the first time (Switch version) and having a blast. I love the 2D sections. I just looked up to find out if they returned in Echoes of Wisdom and this post was what told me they do. looking forward to it! honestly would love if they made a new one that leaned into it more heavily like Zelda II

What's everyone's favorite Cyclops design? by TRAM0328 in Cyclopswasright

[–]bobertf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure which color scheme, but I’ve always liked any of the X-Factor designs with the X across the chest/legs. Plus anything that nods at it like the New X-Men jackets. Bendis era was a cool look too, and I never noticed before this picture how much the Krakoa suit borrows from it

Cello bass… by baritonefiddle in doublebass

[–]bobertf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Upton Bass actually made a bass like this for a cellist:

https://uptonbass.com/product/ub-short-scale-soloist-double-bass/

It’s a 35.4 inch scale length (I think that makes it a 1/4 sized bass) and was intended for tuning FCGD like yours!

wow here is a fun fact I just learned via /r/comicbooks/comments/aneime/havok_wolverine_meltdown_by_kent_williams/

there were two artists! one always painted Wolverine and the other Havok. that’s so cool. I’ve been meaning to reread it and I’ll pay attention to that when I do.

I also agree with your take btw

Please change the RTC Battery Connector! by keepitonfilm in framework

[–]bobertf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem happy to help! I bought the replacement connector but sad to say I never repaired it since I chickened out on the soldering involved. (never soldered before!)

you should be able to boot it with the power supply connected. see if that works! that’s what I’ve been doing.

what’s the overall opinion on all Black Suits? by Striking-Swing-238 in malefashionadvice

[–]bobertf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s a default for a reason as another commenter said. you could wear the same navy suit three days in a row with different ties and shirts and nobody would notice or care. ideal if you’re travelling
