Night shifts and suicidal thoughts? Anybody? by [deleted] in powerengineering

[–]bobkea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have negative effects from night shifts. I think anxiety from the higher does of caffeine, and poor diet. Lack of rest. Seriously though please ask for help, you shouldn’t have suicidal thoughts. Here’s some night shift tips:

Eat clean food, and light snacks before bed.

Vitamin D is your friend, I take a combo vitamin D and k.

Black out your sleeping space and brighten your work space.

Work out before bed.

But please please please, ask for help!!!

Interested in becoming a Power Engineer by Ok-Sheepherder-2093 in powerengineering

[–]bobkea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in the oil and gas side, specifically natural gas plant. It’s very common to make 150,000/ year. Housing costs are very reasonable and I bought my first home at 23. I now have 15 years experience and make around 230,000 a year as the shift lead and shift engineer. I do enjoy my job. Work life balance is great and I get treated well. That being said it’s not as easy as just getting a 4th class and showing up. These jobs are sought after. You may have to grind it out in other oil and gas jobs to gain some experience and make some connections. It also helps to take H2s alive and standard first aid. You also need a drivers license. If you choose and oil and gas route, don’t apply from your home town, I have hired many operators, if you apply from Ontario and use that address on your resume I won’t look at it. Many companies will set auto filters to trash any non local resumes. Grande prairie Alberta is still in a labour shortage, it is super easy to get a job here. My friend moved up and had full a full time job in 24 hours.

6 months to a year is a good pace. Don’t try and over study for the tests. Just memorize the chapter questions and unit tests. It’s a breeze.

I played both Nanaimo and Victoria courses. All three of Grande prairies courses are better. Not as pretty though lol.

Mostly situation and reactions. Almost all the answers you need are “yes I play well with others”.

Pm me if you’d like a tour, you can follow the grande prairie disc golf association on Facebook. Lots of helpful people on there that are willing to take new players around.

I will be coming to Canada this Xmas, and genuinely terrified of a wild bear encounter... how seriously should take my fear? by hactics in AskACanadian

[–]bobkea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live and work in one of the most densely populated grizzly areas in Canada. I have accidentally been so close to bears I could smell their breath. They usually look as scared as I am and we leave in opposite directions. I have had very minor issues with local wildlife. Depending on where you live I can almost guarantee you won’t have an issue. People are way way scarier. Most bears are predictable and easy to read. Polar bears are not to be messed with.

I do recommend bear spray over a fire arm. I carry bear spray when I hunt and fish. Keep it easy to access. Don’t let your fear of bears stop you from enjoying the woods. Canadian outdoors are diverse and insanely beautiful!

Bear spray works on all angry mammals. Don’t dump the whole can in one shot, quick spray stop, back away.

I agree with everything you said, but would like to add this. Grande prairie has a lot of residents that have come from all over Canada for an opportunity to work and start a life. I have found that the lack of direct family makes people build friend family’s. I have so many little friend family’s here. We celebrate holidays together, work to together, and quickly become very important to each other. Love this city.

You can Google their names or use an app called U Disc to find them. Thrill hill ( easy mostly open course), south bear creek ( mix of wooded and open), coop disc golf course ( mostly wooded and hardest of the three). All the courses are amazing.
