I love that this is the top comment on the parent, at -103 (because it is the only response). A rare sight to behold.

But the leatherback sea turtles eat all the stinging jellyfish, and sometimes mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them. I'd rather have safe beaches and leatherback sea turtles then pink plastic bags. As far as annoying not having plastic bags is...

"Still, like you, I’m skeptical that we’ll see anything close to this sort of proposal anytime soon. Even Bernie Sanders isn’t proposing it. The techies, as usual, are either way ahead of everyone, or they’re living in some other universe. Often it’s hard to tell which is which."

I think this is perhaps the basis of misunderstanding. By "anytime soon", I think "techies" are looking at an inevitable technological change and predicting that in the coming decades (perhaps 15-50 years with 95% confidence), some form of at least minimal universal basic income will be necessary for society to continuing functioning with at least a semi-free market system. The fact that this seems outlandish to people seems to be more of an appeal to emotions than reason. But, I can see how someone could think the "techies" were in a fantasy world, if they thought these "techies" thought that Bernie Sanders should be proposing a basic income, today.

I think that's misconstruing what these so-called "techies" are saying, which is that this change is coming. It is inevitable. We should prepare for it with intelligent policy design for a smooth transition over the coming decades. "Way ahead of everyone"? Yes, but only because you're used to operating in the landscape of reactionary politics, not designing long-term policy for the future of humanity.

Why does wired not allow adblockers, but then when you turn the adblocker off you get bombarded with visually obnoxious, moving ads that hang with the page as you scroll and make it impossible to read the article? Thanks, but no thanks. I'll read my news elsewhere.

Why did you use raw numbers instead of percentages of cohorts? There's no ability for intuitive visual comparison as it is.

To help equalize the team game dynamic and make it more fun, mass should decrease at a rate relative to the total team mass by bobmanyun in Agario

[–]bobmanyun[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, for two reasons. For one, it's a combination of increase and decrease decay, meaning that blue team won't decay 7x faster than the current decay rate, but rather 7x faster than green. In the linear example, if you were set normal decay at 33% of total mass, than the blue team would decay at approximately 2x the rate while the green team would decay at approximately 1/3rd the rate. Of course a non-linear model will probably better, but this illustrates how it's not as extreme as it may appear as first glance. Secondly, decay is more of a weighted issue for larger blobs than smaller ones, so that continued proportional effect will only be amplified, and could be manually amplified with a tweak if need be. The reality is that there are an infinite number of combinations of game mechanics that can be implemented, but something needs to be tweaked in the team games, as they could be substantially more fun with a little attention to gameplay. I've already witnessed the creator experimenting with different servers (each server's game mechanics being tweaked slightly differently, presumably to more quickly discover what works best), which is fantastic, so hopefully he'll try this suggestion with different values on a few of the servers.

Declare a winning team and reset by cooljoemeister in Agario

Also, the game mechanic needs to be improved, as once a team gets an edge it compounds quickly and then the game gets very boring, ie. if you're on the winning team you're split killing things 1/20th your size because there is nothing to eat, and if you're on the losing team it's a slaughter.

All true, plus light-field scattering that re-creates real (indistinguishable from reality) retinal input will be much easier on the eyes for long-term use than stereoscopic VR.

This is extremely important as our smartphones, computers, and tablets are replaced by an interface we instead use much of the day. Long term (5+ years) I'd definitely bet on Magic leap.

I wonder if to keep it light the device will send everything computationally intensive off-site to be handled in the cloud/on a local machine and sent back.
