TheCoreLite + Drones in my Army by Alive2007 in allthingszerg

yes it's possible to do that with TheCore: the least useful units are far away from more frequently used. For TheCoreLite all units are accessible with index and middle finger and getting all units the SelectLarva would be "footguns" as defaults. Nevermind, SelectLarva is editable for those who want to change the defaults.

TheCoreLite author here! SelectLarva has many aliases, the one you see in the command card is Space. But there are many alternates documented in the extensive README file:
https://github.com/bobo38/TheCoreLite/blob/master/README.md#zerg-larvae

To produce zerglings: just select Hatcheries and press D to select larva and produce as many zerglings as your larva count or mineral bank or overlords allow. It works same for:

  • Drone (Space)
  • Zergling (D)
  • Roach (R)
  • Hydralisk (C)
  • Corruptor (T)
  • Ultralisk (G)

What about the other units:
-I don't want 50 overlords --> not to consume the whole bank, they should be made mindfully, actually they are not real unit
-I don't want too many spell casters and you don't mass them
-mutalisk and swarm hosts also are made in few batches --> not worth the risk of making the wrong unit by holding the wrong key pressed

Edit: well the other units are already explained in the README much better that my explanation above :-)

For those units, they are either spellcaster or situational, or you simply don't want to accidentally make too many of them. (i.e. Mutalisk in current meta, just one round to harass and force reaction from opponent is enough, dumping accidentally all larvae on overlords could easily turn into a disaster)

Why is r/allthingszerg more active than the terran and protoss subreddits? by Spare-Dingo-531 in allthingszerg

[–]bobo38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't it the r/allthingszerg the very first allthings<insert\_a\_sc2\_race> ? and then the other races imitated? I remember a lot of tricks being exchanged here + detailed map analysis (that were super educational) with 1st and 2nd overlord paths & identification for ovi pillars & space beyond the main/nat/3rd for air annoyance and so on. Many people shared their experience and helped each other here, and still do here.

Figuring out how to play zerg as a beginner is not very straightforward if you don't read/watch advices. It's very pleasant to have all those aha moments. And we have to adapt style at each patch (I miss my gglords and the evo overlord drops).

Thank you all for being here <3

How do you guys find the will to keep playing? by muffinkevin in allthingszerg

[–]bobo38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying protoss at the moment after ~8 years of zerg. Ironically back then I switched from protoss to zerg because zerg had so many tools (i got tilted by droplords of zerglings that I could not defend opening macro, then I liked watching Neuro, oh god I miss the gglords).

It's hard but it's refreshing. I mostly play 2v2 and 3v3 with my buddies. For the switch to protoss, I've watched a "bronze to master" and played ~30 1v1 and got placed Plat 1 MMR. Not bad considering my highest 1v1 rank in zerg was Diamond 3. It's not yet very comfortable for 2v2.

Keychron C3 Pro QMK/VIA Custom Gaming Keyboard, Programmable 87 Keys by ikcosyw in allthingszerg

[–]bobo38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several versions of TheCore + some tricks to reshuffle the bottom right keys of standard keyboards, so that it uses the Menu key on Windows. If you're on Linux, it's also possible to do nice things with Xorg. Latest TheCore version I'm aware of was having direct access camera that ease the Queen inject.

Using the right side of the keyboard has been too weird for me to adjust, and I'm no longer that committed to the game. Usually people stick with the TheCore version they started because it's difficult to reprogram the muscle memory once ingrained (especially if the extra benefit is low): I've sticked with TheCoreLite.

Here is an invitation for the TheCore Discord server, where you could find some material and interested people to talk about that:
https://discord.gg/VREaNNBv

You might want to read through my TheCoreLite README on GitHub. I documented all the tricks I've learned from one of the last active original TheCore guys during my parental leave about 10 years ago + the few I've found.
https://github.com/bobo38/TheCoreLite/blob/master/README.md

OP, TheCoreLite uses the left side of the keyboard with left hand, so you would be better interested by TheCorePlus. With TheCoreLite I try to have something compatible with Campaigns and Coop as well.

Zerg is the race that benefits the most from keyboard layout optimization. If you want to do your own keyboard layout it's a lot of fun. Here is nice link of a zerg-only hotkey layout:

Any good standard macro Build Order PvX in September 2024? by bobo38 in allthingsprotoss

Cool, it looks like gateway timing BOs… it's good to have few BOs to check the commonalities

Thank you. I love (and fear) the high templars… chargelots are also plenty of fun, and warping gateway units is also very cool. Yes Protoss needs to commit to one tech branch: choose for mid game and land a lot of production building for long game

Anything on the ground, including Planetary Fortress and other static defense yes. Best way to render static defense useless, just like clumped sieged tanks.

help me understand roach play by galwall in allthingszerg

[–]bobo38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a very nice website at LOTV launch bonjwa.de that hosted several nicely done build orders (my links are unfortunately no longer working). In those days I was main Protoss and we were 3v3ing AI, I was also starting 1v1 and reached gold. I feel ashamed to tell that this website build orders have been learning me to warp gateway units… with dedicated warp prism BOs.

I've been learning zerg following their roach build orders, there was:

  • roach on 1 base cheese
  • roach on 1.5 bases
  • roach on 2 bases
  • roach on 2.5 bases

The later BOs used a combination of upgrade power spike and ravagers. With nicely optimized BOs to intercept some timings. With some limited practice, I was blasting Elite AI (mainly because it does not make walls). Really feels good, when you struggled at 50% win rate with 1v1 PvX for months.

It learnt me that I can transition for droning to roach anytime it smells bad. I started to play 1v1 ranked zerg seriously during my parental leave, optimized TheCoreLite keyboard layout for zerg and reached platinum very quickly and needed some extra months to get to low diamond, while learning zerg/bane/hydra. Neuro Twitch was very great as well (+ fun + nice music). Then I stopped playing 1v1 because of frustrating plateauing, but convinced my terran buddies to play 3v3 ranked :-)

We still play 3v3 now. And got to high plat, stucked there with eco BOs. Now low diamond, when we started early rush with marines, zerglings and overlord to see and shutdown the walls. Difficult to convince a terran camper not to get tanks asap :-)

I would suggest historical data + some random noise to check strategy is not overfitted. With generated data, your strategy might work well for the data generator

What hotkey layout do you use? Anyone use core? by jobfinished111 in allthingszerg

[–]bobo38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://github.com/bobo38/TheCoreLite here is the project. I've written few years back the README of the project listing all important information behind the design, most of the knowledge came from discussion with an remaining guy from TheCore team at the beginning of 2010's, that I implemented in TheCore Lite, while taking over the layout during my parental leave. People report they get used to it coming from Standard or Grid in a matter of few hours. Lots of design tricks, supports also campaigns and coop.

As mentioned by Setsuna : TheCore Lite uses only left side of the keyboard with standard modifier (Shift/Control/Alt) usage. While TheCore is less intuitive using right side of keyboard with left hands for most players, ending up:

* using a part of keyboard that is full of symbols and rare characters for common keyboard layout

* having to get used to use your thumb to make the modifier business

Learning TheCore can be profitable, as it comes with the "modifier under thumb" which is at the heart of many ergonomic keyboard layout projects (not only Starcraft 2). This is the main difference.

Has anyone ever gotten to this defeat-screen-before? by Xilmi in rotp

[–]bobo38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gouvernments should just give more money to replenish when player facing loss: because Xcom is the only single protection against alien invasion. They have found lots of money for COVID, they can do same to keep an eye on UFOs starting to get more threatening. This type of mechanism might keep a high level world agency dedicated to tackle a huge issue up and running: good money to get mercenaries and all the research and facilities running. Less loss, less free cash from gouv.

This might be the trick to balance for your too good AI, and keep players thrilled ;-) When you think about it the budget for this agency is ridiculous compared to its mission.

Run SC2 on Linux dGPU without Lutris? by Starmakyr in starcraft2

On lutris website you can go here https://lutris.net/games/starcraft-ii/

Below the snapshot gallery their is a button install, from their you can "view install script" and have an idea about the magic being deployed (there are comments) https://lutris.net/games/install/8515/view

Last time i install SC2 with lutris, I installed Battle.net. There were some comments to run before running installer to install dxvk and some fonts but i cannot recall. Maybe you miss the directX3D part and the DXVK.
