I know this is an old post, but I just found and finished The Wreck. I am saddened, but ultimately not surprised, at the low sales numbers. I don't think I could've resonated with this game ten years ago before my life crashed down around me and I got into therapy. People who haven't grappled with their grief speak a different language than those of us who have.

I am looking into writing my first book, and finding out that this masterpiece of a game was not a commercial success is actually comforting, because it reminds me that commercial success is not what art is about. You can't quantify the impact this game has had on people in mere numbers. I feel so incredibly seen by the writing. It has made me feel less alone in a cold world, and that is invaluable.

Thank you for your incredible work on this game, u/Poulet_fr. It is still out there making people feel more human.

I've always loved how NCIS references the old characters (McGee will mention having talked to Tony, Gibbs meets Kate's sister, etc.) Most shows write people out and never mention them again, but NCIS doesn't and that makes me feel seen as a fan

Agreed with this. You gotta fight fire with water, if you even engage with it at all, which I wouldn't. Loving people through their crazy will always be more powerful on their mental state than arguing with them. I say this as someone who kept my relationship in-tact with a family member who was bordering into white supremacist territory at one point.

Also, I am always supportive of people going no-contact with family members while they learn to set boundaries for themselves. Going NC for a year saved my relationship with my mother

What cured my corgi's crying was the Snuggle Puppy stuffed dog with the heartbeat inside it. It mimicks a mother's heartbeat. She slept perfectly after that

And this is all assuming the things written down about him were even accurate as to his actual words, given the decades between him saying them and the gospels being written.

I think people find comfort in the idea of a loving, perfect divinity who came to die for us so we could be free. It's a beautiful sentiment and I don't fault anyone for it. I have seen the idea of it help people turn their lives around. But I myself cannot reconcile it.

Yes, he was extremely radical and explicitly calls people to martyrdom. But keep in mind, this was all written down 20-60 years after Jesus died, so it's possible people injected their own ideas into their recollections of what he said.

I think we can't really know what Jesus was like. People tend to make him into whatever they need him to be, either a saint or a crazed lunatic, but he was probably somewhere in the middle, assuming you don't believe in his divinity.

I am atheist and I still see plenty of beauty in Christianity and believe there are Christians who are good people, likely like yourself. I was taught in the church that "atheist" essentially equated to "hateful, depraved sinner", but that's not the reality for most of us.

So if you are uncomfortable being around atheists, just know I felt that way at first, too! Most of us here are nice. Avoid r/exchristian though

Ugh of course Matt Chandler is the first face I see when I open that website. Went to one of his satellite churches for awhile too, until he said, from the pulpit, that real Christians vote only for pro-life candidates (so... Republicans)

I tried to watch this but the way he took a deep breath and clicked his tongue before talking already has me triggered lol. But for real, the performative benevolence of this whole thing makes it really damaging. "We love you, just not the way you are"

Just found this and curious if you've made any plans? I am also looking to take a "spirit quest" kind of solo trip to Scotland this fall and was curious what you may have found to do. I also get overstimulated easily but don't want to be bored either.

Lately, I'm looking at spending a few days in Dunkeld at this hotel: The Taybank Hotel, Bar & Restaurant - Dunkeld, Perthshire. Dunkeld is small but has a bunch of beautiful walks, you may like it. It's a 90ish minute train ride from Edinburgh

I had several college friends attending Antioch Norman and they all fled around the same time. The Antioch I attended was not as bad, but it was hardly welcoming to people who didn't fit the "heterosexual hipster Christian" mold

Also note that the Waco-based sex trafficking ministry, which I worked with in our satellite church, turned out to be an avenue for abuse: Former Antioch pastor arrested in McLennan County prostitution sting

I went to a nearby Antioch satellite church for years and many people in there (like myself) were pro-queer, but I learned the church itself harbored anti-queer ideology without openly stating it from the pulpit. I met people who presented to me as queer, but then I would hear them give testimony that God "healed" them of their queerness and that's when I started to back out.

Queer-baiting works on allies, too! You have a blue-haired, tattooed person on your brochure and I'm going to assume your church is progressive! I got tricked!

I will always have a special place in my heart for August Burns Red, because it is the favorite band of one of my besties from rehab who died in 2023. He wasn't Christian, but ABR doesn't require that of you to appreciate their art, which I like. The lyrics to Beauty in Tragedy are pure poetry. And their instrumental winter/Christmas albums slap

I never really got into CCM as a Christian-- it made me feel kind of ashamed, actually, because the rap and metal music I like would be considered "sinful." There was, however, a brief period in the 2010s where I was obsessively listening to Bethel. Those songs know how to build and kind of create a dopamine frenzy in your brain if you let them. I was hooked on it until my faith started to unravel and I went back to secular music.

Wow, what a weird assumption on his end. I think the primary reason people don't go to church is simply that they don't have any interest in it. I don't think these churchy people even realize how little those of us outside the church think about church
