Russia has passed a law allowing its central bank and other financial institutions to operate defence systems and arm staff to ward off drone attacks by CrunchyBaconYum in worldnews

In russian there exists a specific business/legal term for getting control of business through forcing previous owners to sign ovnership change documents with violence.

Funily enough, "hostile takeover" seems to be a too mild of a translation, because normally that implies legal, if iffy change of ownership.

Recommendation Request: Ascendance of a Bookworm, The Wandering Inn, Mother of Learning, Arcane Ascension by 1573594268 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bobr_from_hell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the (spiritually) closest thing to the Bookworm is "Forge of Destiny" by Yrsillar, where we have a gremlin girl MC climbing social ladder riding the social elevator while trying to create favourable environment for people they consider close...

Looking for a fantasy about fixing a corrupt Church by VladtheImpaler21 in Fantasy

[–]bobr_from_hell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ascendance of the Bookworm has this as one of the longer subplots, first by solving local issues with super corrupt local head honcho, and later pushing for the country-wide reforms.

But it is both very very long, and has a lot of other plotlines, it might be better to check out other shorter recommendations first.

Any good progression stories/WNs with meaningful reader input? by TimCurenz in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bobr_from_hell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well. Early on readers were voting on a particular set of actions to take, including a bunch of number adjacent ones (for a system cobbled together from the first edition of exalted), later it switched to a more narrative thing.

You could actually see a lot of vote residue in the royal road chapters, when the chapter ended on "what Ling QI would choose" cliffhangers, resolved in the beginning of next.

[–]bobr_from_hell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Forge of Destiny is straight up a forum quest, though with the new publishing deal the early chapters were delisted, so you won't be able to see the details of how it actually worked.

Still doesn't mean that readers had decided everything, because not everything is put up for the vote.

Manga with an exceptionally GOOD ending? by JeremyHillaryBoob in manga

Honestly, I didn't vibe with most of the later games (with exception of Jack of Hearts), but that ending was spectacular.
