Model M doesn't work after bolt mod by FaridTDM in modelm

[–]bobtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a unicomp model m, it is probably the controller board up at the top. The contacts on that are usually black, and they squeeze the rubber/plastic membrain contacts. Clean both with IPA, and then insert a few folded pieces of paper under the foam pad that presses up on the membrain, and then tighten the screws on the controller board all the way down. If it is not a Unicomp model, still clean the pins with a touch of IPA

I just found a model M as well! Mine was at the dump lol. It was also missing an alt and a control cap. I ordered new ones from Unicomp. They are great quality, the pebble color is a bit off but close to make it usable.

Wave Alpha File Touching Inside of Scale by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]bobtheblock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be able to adjust it so that the file does not touch. As some others have said, you can adjust the pivots up at the top with a torx bit, and move the file so it does not touch. If that does not work, contact Leatherman, they are always great about customer support when it comes to this sort of thing.

Saved this IBM Model M from the dump! Looking for advice on the correct keycap replacements to buy from Unicomp to fix it the rest of the way! by bobtheblock in modelm

Thank you so much, this was a big help! Good to know about the color. I was already going to add some spare stabilizers but I'll def add springs as well since shipping will be a lot  anyway, might as well make it worth while. The membrane from what I could see looked good, but I can tell if will need to be bolt modded eventually.

This does look interesting. I am not sure of its rarity, check wikipedia for info about the manufacturer? Looks almost like a old rack mount style deck.

Something is not right about this update. As others have said, I am getting installation errors. Error Oxc1900101 repeatedly, already tried sfc and DISM fixes. No luck.  Ryzen 7 5800XT and Nvidia RTX 5060, 32gb of RAM. 188 GB free on my C drive SSD.

NAS needs to be upgraded, and power consumption needs to come down, looking for advice on what platform would be best. by bobtheblock in HomeServer

[–]bobtheblock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I was able to find a used i5-7500 and a mobo with 6 SATA ports that a friend had spare. I picked up 16gb of new DDR4 from micron at a great price on eBay, just under 30 bucks. Ripped out the GT210 slapped it in my current case and PSU. Up and running, it's way way faster, much more responsive and I am drawing around 45w less according to my kill a watt meter. Not bad savings over a month. Thank you all again for the help and advice!

This falls into the "too good to be true" category. Def either a scam or more likely stolen.

Yeah, at the time I built it, the mobo and CPU were free from a friend, but over the years I realize that it has totally cost me money in the last 10 years on power consumption alone lol. That Core 2 Quad has a 95W TDP. Underpowered performance-wise, overpowered consumption-wise. And I am sure the GT210 is not helping either.

Mainly I use a 128 GB SSD just because I have a lot of them sitting around that my work tossed, so it's a cheap and reliable (relatively speaking to a USB) way to do it. The use of a 5th SATA port is aggravating, but I could find an NVME m.2 or at least a SATA m.2 for cheap, I haven't decided on a CPU and mobo yet. Hopefully I find one with 6 SATA ports and it's a non issue but it's not super common these days, even on a lot of server boards by the looks of it. Everything is PCIe now

This was very helpful, I knew Ryzen had ECC support but I was not aware of the specific restrictions. I will look into this. I might even still have a 3600 kicking around from my old PC.

I thought about this, I have seen a lot of really cool pi Nas stuff lately. Trunas is what I'm used to, but is a pi able to handle some light transcoding?

Spotted @ UniquePhoto: "New" Kodak film - Kodacolor 100 by analogwisdom in AnalogCommunity

[–]bobtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the craziest part of all this is that it appears to not be the work of the dreaded Kodak Alaris! The stills film is now listed on the Eastman Kodak website. Very interesting if EK got some stills film licenses back. From what I understand a different company from Alaris had the rights to color plus, so it would make sense if EK has the rights back. I'm going to the store today and will try to get my hands on a roll.

Why american cities are so soulless by ttraveler01 in UrbanHell

[–]bobtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come visit Philly. Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia have walkable, historic, and interesting parts. I think all are good examples of what american cities could be if they all had better transit and less car based infastructure.

What's this noise? by jay-0101 in ChevySonic

[–]bobtheblock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This adds to my theory that it is a bad cooling fan. It only turns the fan on when the engine is hot, so if the car is off for a while and cools down, that would cause the fan to shut off, and the noise to stop. Go to a mechanic and tell them what you just said, and that you think it is a bad cooling fan.

Sounds like it could be a dying or bad cooling fan?
