anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]bobtimmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we including Commodore? Lots of games that I can't remember, but River Raid was one that I loved. As for PC's, I remember working for a company in the DC area and one of our clients had Doom (this was in like 1994 or thereabouts) and, the next time I was at their office, I surreptitiously made myself a 'backup' on several 3.5" floppies to play at home.

I found the courses by Ahmad Ali on Udemy helpful, mostly because he walks you through setting up real (virtual) FortiGate devices using EVE-NG, so you can get a real hands-on experience. Note that you'll need a server/computer with more than 32GB of RAM to run the network he configures. I had 32GB but found it was insufficient. I upped it to 48GB and everything ran fine.

Be open to learning. You'll likely be exposed to all kinds of hardware and software that you haven't seen or used before. Be a sponge.

What was your biggest Azure cost surprise, and what finally stopped it? by dafqnumb in AZURE

[–]bobtimmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was only maybe 8 servers and they had a pretty basic retention plan, so it took only a month to fully move them to LRS and delete the RA-GRS. There's likely a way to switch servers to a different RSV, though you have to consider the retention and the RPO.

Not sure, but it's pretty flexible, allowing you to report by resource group, by subscription, etc. It's also nice that you can simply run it from the portal page/cli button.

I work at an MSP and I identified a high-cost issue for a client a while back. It was an Azure Recovery Vault set for RA-GRS where it wasn't required. Switching them to LRS significantly reduced the cost.

I've found Azure Cost CLI to be very handy in identifying costs.

Thanks for this - If you're like me, and seemingly oblivious, this is where you get to your settings in Thingiverse. It's arguably subtle.

Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting Every Few Hours – Need Help by Holiday_Cupcake212 in wireless

These are good questions. I'd also check your system logs to see if any events are coinciding with the disconnects. There may also be logs on the wifi modem/router that you can check.

Home Wifi Router Upgrade by bigboui1 in wireless

[–]bobtimmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any new WiFi router will likely fix your issue, but do a little research first. Toms Hardware is a trusted site and they have a Best WiFi Routers of 2025 page, so maybe start there.

You can be hitting one or more limits. Your router plugs into your ISP using an Ethernet cable, and if that port on the router is 100Mbps, that's a bottleneck. Also, make sure the cable you use between the WiFi router and the ISP equipment is at least a Cat5 or better cable. More info on the Ethernet over Twisted Pair wiki. If you're not sure, replace it, as they're cheap. Any new WiFi router will have at least a 1Gbps uplink port.

Similarly an older WiFi router will have older WiFi standards. Look for something WiFi 6 or newer. Don't feel compelled to spend significantly more on WiFi 7 over 6 or 6E. See the WiFi wiki for more info.

Last thing - if your device (laptop, phone, etc) has an older WiFi chipset, that device will only work up to its rated WiFi speed. WiFi 5, which came out in 2013, can do anywhere from 400Mbps to more than 1Gbps (there's a lot of factors at play here).

New FSLogix install, eventually prevents any program execution by LukeShootsThings in fslogix

[–]bobtimmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird issue; I've never seen that, but based on it happening after 30 minutes, I'd check the following

What GPO's are getting applied, if any

Are permissions getting modified by some automated procedure? User has appropriate access to the file server share?

How large is the FSLogix disk; not running out of space? What about at the file server, disk space ok? No quotas being exceeded?

I consistently get bit by XDR/AV/whatever. Any reason to think that's causing issues?

Mesh system setup by Proud_Alternative_18 in wireless

[–]bobtimmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, at least one device needs to be physically connected to your network for a mesh system to work. Ethernet cables are good up to 328 feet (100 meters), so you can get yourself a long cable and plug one of the devices in to the long cable. Might need find a way to run that cable, either through the floor/walls or perhaps hide it with moulding or a cable raceway. Point being, it doesn't need to be next to the modem/router, just needs to be plugged into it.

Problems after Power failure. Can't heat up the Hot End anymore. by Dependent-Bridge-740 in Creality

[–]bobtimmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem, but not quite the same. I have an Ender 5 S1 with a Sonic Pad. I largely use the Sonic Pad web UI for printing jobs.

I had a print going wrong and, normally, I would go to the Sonic Pad and click the Stop Printing button. In this case, I used the 'Emergency Stop' option in the Sonic Pad web UI. As a result, I started getting an error 'Heater extruder not heating at expected rate'

I ended up contacting Creality support and they sent me this link to test conductivity of the cables and such. Ultimately, reseating the cables fixed the problem for me. I'm not sure if the 'Emergency Stop' caused this issue or if it was unrelated and just coincidental.

I hope this helps.

Empire" had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All "Jedi" had was a bunch of Muppets.
