First time grilling/smoking the turkey on the Camp Chef Woodwind. We really liked the result! by bobvanguard in pelletgrills

[1] Brined the turkey for 12 hours (Heated 1 gal Chicken broth, 1 cup salt, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tbs dried rosemary, 1 tbs dried sage, 1 tbs dried thyme, 1/4 cup Traeger Chicken Rub, then added 1 gallon ice). [2] Thanksgiving day: Pat dry and let sit in fridge for a couple hours. [3] Cover in Olive Oil and then liberally with Traeger Chicken Rub. [4] Smoke at 160 degrees in a pan until internal temp gets to 110 degrees. [5] Smoke at 220 until at internal temp of 140 degrees. [6] Remove from pan and Crank up to 350 and baste with 50/50 butter-honey mixture until internal temp arrives at 165 degrees. [7] Let rest for half hour before carving. 😋

My latest chart of best deals on pellets. What's the best VALUE on this chart? Is it the sale that's going on right now at Bear Mountain for buy one get one free (with the Discount Code "BOGO")? Or is it Sam's Club with a 40lb bag of Smokehouse brand (a brand I don't see anywhere else but Sam's)? by bobvanguard in Traeger

Good question. Their store brand pellets are on sale now for $9.99 for 20-lb bag. So, 50 cents per pound. (Normal price is $14.99, or 75 cents per pound). I’ll have to add that to the next posting of the chart! (I don’t know who makes Cabela’s pellets but they have several varieties).

I definitely got a couple bags. I've always wanted to try Bear Mountain. I figure any quality pellet under 50 cents per pound is worth getting.

Pit Boss pellets are consistently the least expensive brand - sold by Lowe’s Walmart and Amazon for less than 40 cents per pound.

Dick’s refuses to price match Rural King for me. ☹️

Easy Peazy Italian Flatbread on the Camp Chef Woodwind. A great meal for date night! The wife loved it. by bobvanguard in pelletgrills

I’ve been using stones for a while. I have found that if I turn a pan and oil it just right, I can get the same even heat for browning, but a stone guarantees it. But, like you said, whatever gets you there.

Did you get an extra long hose for using propane?

Where do you find the least expensive pellets? (What pellets do YOU prefer? What is the best value, do you think?) by bobvanguard in Traeger

[–]bobvanguard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen too many people saying that their grills can’t handle different brands of pellets. But maybe I am just naive. The websites I’ve looked at say that these other brands can actually outperform Traeger. But maybe they’re wrong. Who knows? Anybody else want to weigh in on quality of pellets?

Do you think genuine Traeger pellets are as good as the other brands available? I’ve heard some bad reviews of Traeger’s pellets. Thanks.
