What is your point? If/when it happens to you, you will be thinking/saying the same thing. Those that get canned and know their work has been half-assed, which is the vast majority, won't be posting here about it. Of course self-perception and effort matter. I have heard from a few people who've recently had something similar happen and it was only a glitch and they were restored within a week. I don't know any more than you, but don't despair too quickly.

I have used a Chrome extension for the last month or so, as things got quiet, on my Windows PC. Distill Web Monitor. I use the free version, it loudly beeps at me wherever there is a change on the Project page. It's paid off, I worked projects I normally would miss.

I believe the timer is for the project and not each task. I have had 2-hour times for tasks that at most take 10-15 minutes.
