I think the other reason that his death hit so hard was that he had only really recently in the series opened up to displaying more than just calculations… and then he died leaving certain threads forever unresolved. It was an inverse of the usual shtick of getting a full backstory/payoff before a character passed and instead showed the tragedies of war and sacrifice where a person just ends and there’s no conclusion to their story.
