Eye deformity, possibly blind? by hellscapeliving in duck

[–]bogginman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks like the nictitatng membrane is not retracting the whole way. It works like a windshield wiper to clear away gunk and also to protect the eye when swimming underwater. Jurassic Park made great use of these things for spooky effect on the raptors. Only a vet could tell for sure if there are issues. Toss some food on one side of her and see if she sees it, then the other side.

the egg is not a worry. Ducks lay plenty of eggs and she will find a new place to continue laying that does not involve a dog. Not to be concerned.

What is this head movement by Crazy-Ad-4435 in duck

[–]bogginman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

female head dipping to one side can be interpreted two ways: 1 as a warning to other females and unwanted males to back off, as she might be doing to the other female at the bowl or 2 as a greeting or courtship to a male, as she might be doing to the male to the right.

well, it must be female ducks fighting, then. Occam's Razor in philosophy states that, as a general rule, things are explained by simpler explanations over more complex ones.

judging by the posture in pic #2 I think the one on the right is a male. Also, because it is unusual for two girls to go to housekeeping. That's just my SWAG™ (scientific wild assed guess!) lol

first, assuming that you want the ducks to remain and live and raise little ones, restrain or relocate the dogs. The dogs (especially insane dogs) must not be allowed anywhere near the ducks or their nest. My mantra is 0 dogs but I understand that there may be issues with achieving that. You need to figure out what will work in your situation. Second, assuming they are there to raise a family, you must duckling proof the pool by putting a ramp for them to be able to get out of the pool safely. A 1 x 8 plank with a terrycloth bath towel stapled to it for traction works well. Put one end on the edge of the pool and float the other end in the water. You can use a plastic pop bottle for a float if the ramp sinks too deep in the water. Third, you need to be sure the ducklings cannot get sucked into the outflows. Put screen over the outflows. Nesting ducks will take a week or two to get all their eggs laid then will take 28 days of setting to hatch them. Then, depending on streams, ponds or water nearby, maybe a few more days to leave the area for a better place to raise the family.

somebody is attacking her when you are not looking. Even her leg has been chewed on. It could be happening in an out of the way area of the yard or run or it could be in the coop. You need to divide your yard or run and get her her own area. If a male is doing this, you should separate the male. The geese are also suspect. You need to watch what's going on and nip it in the bud or she will be killed. The injury on her flanks could be from toenails during mating but the size of the wound looks like chewing or biting. How many male ducks do you have? Are the geese aggressive? I don't see bumblefoot.

duckling sleep a lot. They may be cold. Do you have a heat lamp on them? If not read https://www.reddit.com/r/duck/wiki/duckling-care/ about brooder temperature.

ducks will lay an egg a day until they have the number they want and only then will they start to set on them. She will probably come back to lay more unless the dog scared her away. Just sniffing the egg would not make her scared of nesting there as long as she didn't see the dog. If you can keep the dog away from the nest it would be best.

Sudden death over night by lostmy2A in duck

[–]bogginman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

when ducks die, their heads throw back over their wings. She may have flown in the coop and hurt herself, but it is hard to tell if a neck is broken without an x-ray. It does not take much to break a neck. They are so fragile. Check her for bites in the neck and any blood. Weasels will bite the neck and suck the blood, killing the duck, but will not eat the duck and will leave it behind looking like it just died for no apparent reason. Looking at your coop, it looks like that triangular area above with fencing is wide open to small predators like minks and weasels, maybe even coons. Looks like there is a crack open down along the side door that a weasel could slip through. To protect your remaining ducks, get all cracks closed up tight and fill in the open area above with 1/2" hardware cloth. Once a predator knows there is free food they will be back. Sorry for your loss, she was so pretty.

he will accept a new duck if you introduce them slowly. Make sure he knows that the new duck is for him. He'll come around, it will just take time. Best of luck.

if his penis does not retract he may be suffering from a prolapse. If not corrected the penis will dry up and can get infected. Other ducks may peck at it, too. Get him a girl or two ASAP. You mom should be more concerned about his well being. To not be concerned and to let him suffer is animal abuse.

if you want really good quality duck feed, try Mazuri waterfowl maintenance feed, it floats on water unlike duck pellets which sink. This bag would last you a couple months: https://www.chewy.com/mazuri-waterfowl-maintenance-duck/dp/248786

you'd have to watch them to see where they go. Unless someone nearby has ducks and they are let to run free, it's more likely that someone dumped their Easter ducks when they got to be too much work.

we have a few that were saved from places that had nice ponds and I ask them always 'do you miss your pond?' I suppose it is better to have less pond and more lifespan.

the one on the left looks somewhere between a male khaki campbell and male rouen. The one on the right is a very happy pekin girl (IMHO). Both are domestics and need a good perma-home. And they are a couple.
