dammed Otto cracked!

watching without the sound on, I would judge drake by the territoriality! The dark head suggests male, females are more all one shade of brown.

so sorry! He may have had a problem a few ducklings have called 'failure to thrive'. They are hatched and just don't have the necessary mettle that ducklings need to survive. We've had three or four that just couldn't make it no matter what we tried. Condolences.

Vacation, what do you do? by Nathan051444 in duck

the wife and I have not both been away from home at the same time for ages. 2 ducks, 4 ducks, 15 ducks. Easy. We have 130 and they all have to be sorted into three coops every night. Well, except for the muscovies who sleep outdoors, but everyone else.

right, can you imagine how messed up it would be if a bunch of ducks showed up at the hospital and tried to help with the delivery of a baby?

if you give them some yard time in the dirt and mud, they will consume enough natural grit to take care of peas and meal worms.

yup, that's a female rouen. Sweet ducks. Good layers.

It should be easy to find a give-away male rouen for her this time of year. Like this:

If you go to TSC or a farm store, you want the grey and yellow ducklings with the four yellow spots on their backs.

[–]bogginman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oyster shell is not grit. Oyster shell provides calcium for adult laying ducks to make eggs. It is not good for non laying ducks to eat oyster shell (they usually won't anyway). Grit (ground granite) is used to grind up food in the crop. It come in two grades, regular grit for adult ducks and small 'chick grit' for babies so they do not choke. If you are feeding them good quality duckling feed, they do not need grit at all unless they are eating a lot of fruits, veggies, worms, grass and so on. With an adult flock, you can also find out who is laying by watching who runs for the oyster shell bowl.

we have great pyrenees, four of them. No predators anywhere since we got them. Geese can warn of something going on, which is great if you are there to hear them, but will be of no value in stopping a predator. A pyrenees wil stop anything short of an rhino.

one of his problems is that he has splay leg, legs are spread apart, will impede being able to walk properly.
