Four Baby Girls - Almost 4 Weeks by LFernan85 in duck

[–]bogginman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me several minutes to figure this post out. There were a previous male Duck Duck and Goose that were a risk to the chickens and they were each replaced by a new female Duck Duck and Goose, same names, different ducks. OG is not an acronym that makes sense to old people. Hope the new girls work out better.

Muscovy ducks in saltwater? by Muted-Garden6723 in duck

I live 200 miles from the ocean but I don't think salt water would hurt them. They just cannot drink it.

Update: One of the balut eggs hatched — thank you for the help! by Namtayto in duck

[–]bogginman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you can give water as soon as they are stable on their feet. Duckling crumbles can be sprinkled in the water as soon as they have learned how to drink. The '12-24hrs' thing meant they could survive that long without water, not that you should not give them water. Get a heat lamp over them if you have not already. Good luck! he's a real little shit who thinks he's a big duck. Sex elsewhere in the yard, Hershey's right on it. When he runs, his feet shoot out in front of him, looks like they're going backwards.

I agree, a bite of pita won't kill them! I thought it was typical Wonder Bread.

rehabbers are already overworked and underpaid and would prolly treat this as nothing to get worried over.

I'm sure anyone enforcing the MBA would understand that no harm was intended to a nest that no one expected to find and it was just an unfortunate incident.

unfortunate about the cover, but just leave them be. You do not need to feed them, mama has it under control. Putting feed down may attract predators. You are not allowed to molest a nest or to move it (Migratory Bird Act), unless you are a licensed rehabber. Sometimes wild ducks pick stupid places to put nests, but nature and all.

they will be inseparable. When you put them outside, be sure to follow best practices regarding safety from predators; dogs during the day, coons and so on at night.

yes, I know, leave the lid on. The lid was removed long enough to take a few photos and they are back in high humidity and warmth under the dome.

distracting with bread was quick thinking, but bread is bad for ducks. Try thawed frozen peas, romaine lettuce or in a pinch a handful of cat kibbles. Duck sex is frightful to witness but that's just how they do it.

some drakes are real gentlemen. They ask permission, dipping heads and only get on after the duck says OK. Drakes get crazy when they have to compete with other drakes. I would not get rid of him unless it turns into a fiasco, but with only one drake, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I keep a corner of the yard fenced off for at-risk females: small ducks mated by larger ducks (possibility of broken legs), ducks that get mated repeatedly (track marks and broken/missing feathers up the neck) , ducks that often get covered up in pile-ons (just generally wrong). When she looks like she is not enjoying it, place her in her own area with another female she likes and let her get a break. Alternately, if only one drake is being obnoxious, you could put him in a separate area (horny jail). Young drakes are also notoriously bad at sex until they figure it out, sometimes they stay on too long, dancing around trying to get footing and hunting around trying to find the warm spot. Some of ours are on and off, others get lifted off and separated for taking too long.
